Well decided to start my first game as USA as a nice easy game. Not digging the neutrality system at all. The undeclared war sounded cool in the dev diary, I need 40 threat with Germany to activate the decision, I currently have about 1% threat due to different continent. This is in late 1941 when Axis controls pretty much all of Europe besides a few hangers on and the UK. My highest threat is Japan at 16% due to different continent. They ate up China and hangers on and took over French Indochina. I know the US is isolationist, but this is kinda silly. At this rate I won't be in the war until 1944 or something like that. Having the fall of France neutrality losing decision be linked with Yugoslavia seems odd when in every game I have ever played of HoI3 Yugoslavia never gets involved in the war beyond offering military transit rights. So that is a big chunk of neutrality I will never get to get rid of. I'm very much not impressed so far.

They get some decisions that lower the neutrality massively if certain things happen like the fall of France and such, very nice IMO.

As I addressed in my post the Fall of France one won't let me enact it. Because for some reason it is tied to Yugoslavia. A Yugoslavia whose conditions will never meet the ones required, or at least hasn't so far or in any game of HoI 3 I have ever played. France fell over a year ago in my game.

Playing as the USA this time. AI running diplomacy, politics, intel. US ran as
usual up to 1941 tho without Roosevelt as President. Japan declared war on
me and Germany/Axis followed. All quite normal but little action at all in Pacific
so far, just subs and convoys.

I have played HOI 3 earlier couple of times shortly, but eventually stopped games because it did not feel finished product. So, I am not expert in features or anything. After horrible installation process, I was finally able to play yesterday from the year 1936 to 1939 with Finland. Of course, the game was peaceful to this far, but initial impression was now good.

I think that HOI 3 may be now such game which I expected to get from original release.

If Paradox still continues development by doing some improvements, it may be eventually as great as EU III - a classic game, may be the best WW II game so far.

I just installed Vichy in my first GER game - and jeez, the british AI is goind crazy. I had 2 large invasions so far, one in Brest and one in Dunkerque.

They landed in a free province next to the harbors and started a pincer movement from sea and land, while bringing additional units ashore. In the end about 20 divisions had established a bridgehead and I had not only to redeploy all my costal guards to contain them, but also re-allocate my panzer corps from the east. After beaten back most of the divisions retreated to transports, only to land in Dunkerque after being reinforced. Again I had to mobilize all defence units, but this time managed to push them inland and annihilate them there. Still, quite a display of skill from the AI. If the USA will be as agressive as the British, I guess I will have to garrison the whole french coast with multiple divisions. °.°

I'm enjoying some parts of FTM and not others so far.

Started a 36 campaign as Germany as I always do to test out a new expansion and like the faster speed of gameplay and the new resource bonuses.

Now to the bad parts not sure if they are bugs or new design... In 1936 I had the fractured government that's fine I got rid of that in a few months but until I declared war I couldn't raise my NU at all, once I declared war it started going up but not even a 0.001 raise before that.

Trying to fight a blitzkrieg war is about mobility but if you need to rebase your airforce you might as well forget it as you'll normally out fight their range before they are useful as you now lose 50% org when rebasing them and have to leave them sitting there for 2 weeks + to regain it or they get slaughtered.

Seems to be a big change in air combat again not sure if a bug or design, I sent in my normal 3 int against 4 cags, 2 Tacs and 2 dive bombers from the RAF and my ints were getting slaughtered, losing 20% health every cycle of combat but not all of them only 1 at a time was getting hit hard the rest slower ,so unless I keep a reserve single int back at base I'm always waiting for 1 really badly beaten up int to recover with 2 being ok, all my techs were up to date had 41 in aircraft design and 40 for air tactics in 1939 when these combats were going on over France.

0 str 0 org seems to have been transferred to other aircraft now as well,I had a 3 int air intercept group at Wilhelmshaven which was intercepting the same single 0 str 0 org dive bomber up there for over 7 weeks slowly draining my ints str and org but gaining them next to no exp and not destroying the dive bomber.

As you can see my main gripes are about air combat ;)

About the HQ-brigades: AFAIK, somewhere during the betas for SF, they got their strength lowering from 3,000 to 1,000, while still staying frontline brigades (the only one consisting of only 1,000 men). This was, IMHO, i nice compromise between the ´None-combat-HQ´-camp and those who like to augment their HQs to hold Corps-assets (i´d really like you not to start the discussion of the legitimacy of one or the other POV, please). Was this really changed? Some people (incidentally known to be of the ´none-Hq-camp´) claim that HQ arent frontline brigades - i dont think that´s true - hence i am asking...

I have just played FTM for a few hours tonight. With only one campaign in Ethiopia I cannot make any profound observation on the ai, but it did put up one of its better fights in holding back the Fascist Hoards. I will say that the appearance, speed and "smoothness" of the game have been significantly improved with the FTM expansion. The zoomed in appearance is so nice that I may actually make a habit of using that mode--it really is a huge improvement.

It is well worth the cost.

Played it last night for a couple of hours as Republican Spain, with a few modifications to the static_modifiers for very easy, just to check out some of the new features.

Definitely liking the new interface changes and the core usage upgrade is awesome. The Air/Naval interface changes mean I may actually use those in future, and the (possibly new but I'm not sure, this is also an interface I often forget to use) changes to the supply interface showing the convoy routes will improve my games whenever I pick a more navalised power. The core usage upgrade has definitely revolutionised my game, making months pass in the blink of an eye in '36, now to see if the same happens during the war itself!

I am, on the other hand, disappointed with the so-called political system "changes". As far as I can see this is the addition of the coup button and a modifier to lower unity by a small amount if you had radically different cabinet members than your ruling party. Not exactly a revolution, which is disappointing as I loved the politcal parts of EU3 and Victoria 2 (as well as Vic 1, which still stands as my favourite of that generation!) and even the limited system of HOI2 which, even in its slider oddness, was far more involving and game changing than the virtual lack of it available in HOI3. :(

Right, now that rant is over, in bug terms I'm not seeing very many. My game has been pretty stable, with the only CTD occurring when I quite stupidly tried to use a SF mod, and no graphical issues. Compared to the previous HOI3 releases this has been the most impressive in terms of debugging and software debugging. Congratulations Paradox for selling me a non-beta product this time! :p

Now onwards for me to a full (non-slightly-cheating to see the cool features) game to see how good the AI is and see if the war will reduce the speed to a crawl!

Minuses:
The big disappointment so far is the map, lots of provinces misnamed, for example the airfield in munchen is not in munchen but you have to click on munchen to access the airfield

There was an airfield in München where today the Olympia Stadium is ... so it's somewhat historically correct. :)

Played it for a few hours and my conclusions:
* The AI now is insanely good, at least in terms of exploiting my weaknesses (such as actually invading ports which aren't properly garrisoned).
* The game is so incredibly fast I can barely believe it.
* Loved the new diplomatic events.

I bought the expansion mainly because of the performance improvements that were promised, as this was by far my biggest issue with the game, and I must confess I was not disappointed. Everything else beyond that has been icing.

Did have one crash after ~4 hours of play.

Have starting technology levels been changed? I started a UK campaign and noticed that the fighter aircraft technology levels seem considerably lower than in SF. UK now doesn't start with Basic Airframe or Fuel Tanks, and Advanced Design. There might have been others but those were the ones that really stood out off the top of my head.

Yes, techs received a basic revision, although you won't see that many drastic changes.

What of the annoying way in which completely conquered countries decide to fight on in exile and leave you with half owned conquered territories? also, can you now exchange territory between states like in HOI2? My friend and i like carving Europe up, can't seem to do that in hoi3. cheers.

Well so far I liked my play with Sweden. A hands of game to see where the AI would get.
I really liked the strategic resources and the way neutrality was handled. I did not understand the fractured_government modifier at first, but it became clear when it was gone ^^. The struggle for resources seems more intense, there are almost no rare materials in western Europe anymore, though I was puzzled that every 2 years a major country would cancel all my resource deals. This made it hard to keep up good relations. Also strange was that the Netherlands and France made +44 rare materials even though they were occupied and had no IC left. Wouldn't it be more helpful if they traded/gave it to the UK/USA?
Japan was really getting stomped by China. At the end of 1942 they had lost all territory in china (but still held Manchuko and Korea). USA had joined the war at the right time due to the new decisions and I was really pleased by that. Germany got its Axis friends all at the right time (1937 Japan, 1939 Hungary and Italy and Romania when I wasn't paying attention :p)Only problem seems to be that Germany does not attack the USSR in 1941. They have rather few troops committed to the eastern front line. Maybe they spend a lot of IC and troops killing the new partisans?
The parliamentary scandal event seems to have changed to remove active ministers. A logical and perfectly fine step but as Sweden (and any other minor country) I really don't have ministers to spare. In the end I had 2 empty spots in my cabinet at the start of 1940.

Small issues: on the map Nijmegen seems to be spelled Nijmwegen and in Östersund there seems to be a tiny black pixel hole.

For the rest I basically agree with what other posters had so far mentioned.

>.> you just made me read through a whole of posts... well maybe I should have read all 10 pages instead of 1 :)

Anyway I agree with those that reported on the faster speed, zooming, nice map (except for those minor issues mentioned above), the somewhat smarter AI (though not amazing to me), the out of proportion threat raising and the hassle of installing and running it (although I seem to be lucky considering what others went through).

However in my short experience with the game the neutrality seemed to be doing its job well enough, so I guess I do not agree with all of the other posters... Also my UK didn't do any spectacular invasions :( but they did manage to punch Italy back and ended up with half of North Africa in the end.

Havent had time to read the whole thread, I love FTM so far its a major improvement. I do have one small nitpick and would really like a small change. I used to just select provinces and hold down the "f" key to build infrastructure. Now if you hold down the "f" key it opens the find province window. That makes mass infrastructure building a pita, can we please make the find province window a different key stroke?
