So, do I read this right?

You are England, with absolutely no military bonuses at all, you are fighting France. You gave them provinces earlier. They already have elan, atleast 3 ideas into offensive, they have 3 god generals, you use a bad army composition and you don't pause to look at battles.

Just surrender and try again when you have atleast fixed the last 2.

In all seriousness, England gets the PU too easily. And then there's no real challenge.

That's why I stopped playing the campaign started with custom Normandy and Guyenne. Playing without rival France as England ends up kind of pointless to me and turns into Portugal colonising game. And it's so much more fun to play the colonising game as one of the Baltic Sea states.

Consolidate your units after battles by default. With more experience you'll know when to shift+consolidate / not consolidate to not actually end up disbanding units but for someone learning to manage manpower / econ accurately consolidating is incredibly useful. Spamming consolidate is a lot better than getting blown out due to having understrength regiments.

On tech 8 you went for so much artillery? Why? Arty before mil tech 13 is utter garbage for battles, on 13-16 starts to become acceptable and useful. And with frontage of 11, you're getting flanked A LOT, and quickly evaporate espiecally when France have Elan.
I think its pretty suboptimal until 16 which practically doubles artillery fire damage (via modifier and additional unlock). If you're rich and already maxing combat width by tech 13 I guess it could be ok but I cannot think of a single start I've played where I'm that strong to casually spam artillery.

Before tech 16 you should have 5 artillery to get faster sieges.

In most starts I play, if you can afford 5 artillery by that stage you've already won the game lol

ensuring frontage to maximize flank damage pre-16 is a more important consideration if you're not a superpower that can smash everything with ease IMO. Like you're cutting 7-10 infantry depending on (force limit considerations), that does tip battles hugely since shock damage is still king pre-16.

my playstyle could be wrong though - I'm happy to hear other opinions.

Well, I mainly play Indonesia and sometimes europe. In Indonesia it is extremely easy to get some $$$ going.

Fair enough. If you're rich to the point where you can afford to max flank your enemies easily then artillery is definitely great for faster sieging

another important consideration is whether your playstyle utilizes early religious. If you have deus vult then you can quickly get +40 warscore from battles alone and do not need to siege multiple forts for big concessions. If you're using conquest or imperialism (basically any non-superiority CB) then artillery/offensive ideas definitely become more attractive as you now need to fast siege wargoals and need fort captures to get high warscore.

again, its possible that early religious may be a crutch in this patch version since conversion is significantly easier now. Certainly an interesting topic for discussion as I've recently seen some nice campaigns demonstrating how powerful humanism can be for snowballing (since now you can zero-fort without having to multitask, and in SP I strongly believe that zero-fort is optimal play).

Haha yeah, when i checked my trade nodes when i first played as france with the new set up i thought "and this is why i've an excuse to conquer half europe...."

Anyways france in this patch is fine and as an england player you could even win the war without dropping your armies. England armies are also supposed to be very weak once that france's Elàn kicks in. Austria and Castille have had a moral bonus boost to their traditions some patches ago so that they can still manage to survive when france has Elàn, since they're gonna be around france (most times ofc) much more time than england. So, dowing war to france as england not early is very unwise since for 1500s france shouldn't represent a menace to you anymore instead of a blob that has got all the time to grow stronger and stronger. If you wish to do so then you should get some Military idea sets and still think that you're handicapped because france for sure will do the same and have higher bonuses than you in the end. It's also a lucky nation in ironman so that it's even stronger than its real weight, and is supposed to have godly generals if it has time to wage and win wars, which you gave to them. That + offensive and lucky nation bonuses will make you always see at least 2 stars generals deployed on the ground. Also, against enemies which have the quality of france is mandatory to consolidate armies and follow the best ratios, reinforce while you get attacked and try to defend only, using mountains, hills, or rivers. I usually use the tactic to drop 18k on caux and dow france, wait france to come into caux (which at least has a river), and then reinforce with other 18k with navies. If you manage to do things quickly (not using the automatic transport and loading the armies manually) you'll able to transport armies from england to france in 3 days and make the AI calculation of nearby enemies go nuts and win easily the battle because france thought you just had 18k on the continent. This is an example of a gamey use of transports and this is why wiz will always be right when he says that human cheats way more than AI does, and that's why actually nations are balanced around other AIs and not around the player since he basically can do what he wants.
Also keep in mind that when you'll delete france the game will be downhill and boring, they're supposed to be the strongest nation in europe in this period after all.

Which means a policy of balance of powers in continental europe, and the formation of an alliance against the dominant power of Europe.
