Oddly enough we have seen no alien ships at all in the Cricket system, and are getting absolutely no reply to our hails... not even "go away".

Could they be a pre-spaceflight civ?

Recall that Bla-aat explored a jump point in the Pharaoh Ant system, and it led to the new alien-occupied Cricket system.

Ah-Verr-Nite just now explored a SECOND jump point in the Pharaoh Ant system, and it ALSO led to the Cricket system.

Two jump points in system A, and BOTH of them lead to system B. I don't think I've ever seem that arrangement before.

We are now researching a 25 cm Plasma Carronade!

... and we've also got a Quad Gauss PD Turret lined up for research.

Some day soon, we will have some sort of primitive weaponry!

Now researching our first really functional weapon system... a ground unit armed with an STO (surface-to-orbit) 25 cm Plasma Carronade.

If I stack a crapload of them on Hive, they could make a nasty surprise for any hostile aliens... an ambush shot by ONE of them at point blank range does 16 damage.

If that's the case surely they are a perfect low risk target for an attempt to conquer a new planet? They would be without any ability to retaliate even if things do go badly.

I have to third "let's conquer the planet now" idea. Nice resources, nice forward base for our explorers, a back up colony in case something happens to Hive and no risk of retaliation. What could possibly go wrong?

Well, I can list a few of the things that might go wrong:

1) We haven't SEEN any alien ships in that system. Then again, we had no Battle-Management active sensors there (we have none built yet). Our detection range wasn't much further than Hive-to-Luna. There could be HUNDREDS of ships hanging around, out of sight.

2) We have no fleet to bombard them, and no Army to invade them with.

I do agree that we should be building up our military, ground and space, as rapidly as possible. We are currently researching our first STO weapon. But it's premature to talk about invading. We'll need a military force for that.

If they have no ships, a few pre-trans-Newtonian groundpounders should be quite enough, no?

According to reports in Steve's forum, in C# Aurora it seems to take HUGE armies to conquer a planet.

And as pointed out, we don't know whether they have a fleet or not. All we know is that our (half blind) scout didn't spot one.

Our fleet of Munchers is doing a wonderful job, producing almost 13,000 minerals per year. The mineral situation is rapidly improving... our Duranium has gone up from its low point of 14,000 to 24,000; Boronide is up from 5,000 to 13,000; Sorium is up from 10,000 to 36,000.

Conquering those Skinnies is a great idea... but we can afford to wait for Recon. Build a fleet and an army, collect all the info we can, THEN invade and eat them.

Mid-March of Year 28.

We have grown from our starting allocation of 16 labs to 32. Our population has grown from 1 billion to 1.85 billion. We are now researching weapon techs and sensor techs. Our mineral economy seems to have turned the corner and started expanding instead of contracting.

It appears that we are approaching "the singularity" at which we transition from a vulnerable, planet-bound society into an interstellar empire. We just need to get through the next ten or twenty years without a disaster.

Here is our first combat-ready unit!

FTH_125_STO.jpg

A ground unit equipped with one 25cm Plasma Carronade capable of doing one point of damage per shot at roughly 240,000 km, scaling up as high as 16 points per shot at point blank range (so: 8 points per shot at 120,000 km, etc). Fires once every 20 seconds. Integrated into the formation are a Supply unit, 40-odd Rifle squads (to provide security against close assault by enemy Infantry), a few Machine Gun and Anti-Tank teams, and some HQ units.

A Troop Transport can lift these units five at a time (assuming that they can be transported at all... I haven't tested that yet).

Building four of them now.

Yes! The STO units can indeed be transported by starship. So we can put some on Luna and Mars as well as on the Hive.

I was a bit uncertain, since they are labeled "Static". I guess that just means that they cannot move during battle the way a Rifle Squad can.

They also count as PPV! They are considered "protection" for your colonies, so they make the colonists feel safer.

Our pre-build is complete and we have laid down the first Spit Bug class Gauss Point Defense Frigate. The pre-built components have reduced the build time by about -60%.

No sappers. :(

So the Army goes all the way to squad levels? Boy, that sounds so cool but at the same time micromanaging hell.
