We are looking for something GOOD!

How is Proxima Centauri not closest? ;)
Yeah, I think he's got the distances borked up... Wolf 359 should be a lot closer than that, too.

Of course, our game is at least three patches behind his release version, so this error might already be fixed.

Oh, wait!

Maybe that's a map of where the JUMP POINTS are, in our Home Sun system! That would account for the "AU" labels.

YES!!! We just got a Power and Propulsion scientist!

I have successfully gamed the system!

Here's how it works with Naval Academies:

You can either leave them without a Commandant...

… in which case they produce 60% Naval Officers, 25% Ground Officers, 8% Administrators, and 7% Scientists (of a random specialty).

Or you can give them a Commandant of any of those four branches (Navy, Ground, Admin or Science), which biases the results...

A Naval Commandant will produce Naval Officer graduates 80% of the time, and if the Commandant has high scores either in Training or in a specialty (such as Fighter Operations) every graduate of the same type (Naval, in this case) takes two rolls for relevant skills and keeps the better roll.

A Ground Officer Commandant works the same way, but produces Ground Officer graduates 40% of the time, with the same roll-twice-and-pick-the-best for skills.

An Administrator Commandant produces Administrator graduates 16% of the time, with the same roll-twice-and-pick-the-best for skills.

And a Scientist Commandant produces Scientist graduates 14% of the time, 25% of them in his own field of specialty, with the same roll-twice-and-pick-the-best for skills.

Lastly... it is now possible to change the field of specialty of any Scientist. This is a serious matter, because he loses 75% of his bonus (dropping, for example, from +20% to +5%) and has to start gaining skill all over again.

… so naturally, I picked one of our ZERO-skill Scientists, switched his field of specialty to Power and Propulsion (losing 75% of his zero bonus... ouch!), and made him the commander of our Academy.

Sure enough, the first Scientist produced was a +10% Power and Propulsion specialist! :D

We are nearly finished searching the Home Sun system for Jump Points. Once we are reasonably sure we've found them all (barring any hidden one-way jumps leading in) we'll send most of the Dragonflies in for overhaul, refit the Dragonfly I to the Dragonfly II model, and see if we can assisted-jump a Tumblebug into one of our neighboring systems.

We have found a fourth Jump Point (discovered by an NPC), this one leading to Alpha Centauri.

The system contains a G2-V primary star very much like our own Home Sun, with a wealth of semi-habitable colony sites... three planets and six asteroids roughly as habitable as Mars (although the asteroids all require low-G Infrastructure). The secondary star is 3.5 billion km from the primary, and holds another Mars-like world and another colonizable asteroid.

This looks like a good place to prospect for minerals, since it holds 11 colonizable bodies.

The gravitational survey of the Home Sun system is complete. We found a total of four jump points... three of them found by a single Bug.

All of our Dragonflies and Tumblebugs are now in overhaul, in preparation for the exploration of the newly discovered star systems.

Our #1 target for mineral prospecting will be Alpha Centauri, since it would be a wonderful place to set up several colonies...

... IF it holds any worthwhile minerals.

The SV Luna Moth is the first ship out of overhaul... :p ... so Bug Ah-Verr-Nite will lead the charge into Alpha Centauri.

Let's see if the GEV Dung Beetle can assisted-jump and come along with him.

Should've taken the Moon beetle.

Also, if there are no worthwhile minerals, is there still any gain from just colonizing Alpha Centauri? More income, research, civilian ships, whatever?

More income, from population taxes and civilian trade. And since without minerals the colonists won't be able to build much, we might as well put them to work in financial centers and research labs.

Should've taken the Moon beetle.

Still under overhaul.

Blaaat and Hyme are both promoted to Bug and assigned as commanders of the remaining two Dragonflies. They may name their ships, hopefully in keeping with the established naming convention (Luna Moth, Mars Moth). No stinging insects, please... those names are reserved for armed warships.

Nope... the Tumblebugs CANNOT assisted-jump with a Dragonfly. I will either need to build a commercial jump tender, or re-engine the Tumblebugs with military engines.

Bug Bla-aat in his new Dragonfly "The Un-named Bug" has made a nice Duranium strike in Wolf 359: hundreds of thousands of tons at 100% purity.

But we're looking for Corundium, Blaaat! Corundium!
