Scotland Forever

OK, we got a busy one here. I was somehow able to get 19 screenshots from a total of 64 that just covers ten years of the game. :D After I was done yesterday, I had over 270 screenshots and had made it to 1475. A lot happened along the way so let's get to it.

In March of 1450, we get a good event hopefully proving James II has been a good King.

EndofNoblesFighting.jpg

At least the north seems pacified. In July and August I continue trying to get into some trade. Merchants are sent to Livland and Lyonnais with 1 succeeding in each. That is not nearly enough to achieve my aims. I need to trade for grain to support more troops. In October, I look at the support limit,

Troopsupportlimit1450.jpg

I need to get that up to at least 15,000.

The rest of the year is fairly calm ending with a RM with Norway. And then another nice event hits,

UniversityofGlasgow.jpg

Every little bit helps. As it is, I should reach Infra 3 in about 1476.

This same January of 1451 sees England annex Ulster continuing their growth. I look and see their BB is only 16.2/35. Hrmph!

By July, I decide I want a small fortress in Northumberland and start minting again. It'll take forever if I don't. And in November I get a noted diplomat at court,

NotedDiplomat1451.jpg

I don't want to spend the money supporting him would cost so I send him away for a loss of 5 victory points. Whatever.

Finally in January of 1452, James II shows up as a leader. I now have three of them,

ScotlandGenerals.jpg

And little I can do with them since I cannot afford an army large enough to beat the English head on.

This same month, Livland closes down and Danzig takes its place. I spam it with 5 merchants, 4 of which make it in. This helps support limit immensely as Danzig has much grain to trade from what I recall.

My plethora of generals ends fairly quickly in February when both Douglas and Ormonde die...disappear...are beheaded. From what I recall, James killed a couple of these guys himself. Regardless, James II is still there and ready should I need him.

I check and find I can now support 15,000 troops thanks to trading. And in October I adjust the budget again with inflation hitting 23%. I should also mention that Naples canceled their vassalage with Argon in August of 1452, but they stayed in the alliance.

I move into 1453 still unable to take advantage of what seems some serious rebel problems England is dealing with. However, they are all in Ireland, Normandie and Gascogne. I'll know it's close to time when the revolts start hitting England proper.

In May of 1453, the nationalism in Northumberland is over so I hire a tax collector. And then in August, York is named Protector of the Realm in England. It's getting close.

Then in October of 1453, I get a big event:

BreakingofDouglases.jpg

I destroy them, of course. I want the money and the centralization and I DO NOT want the extra troops right now.

While I am sitting back and enjoying my swift action and bold judgment, I look south and see that England has 11,000 on my border without much trouble inside England. But they are having troubles in France...

NormandieandOrleansRevoltBack.jpg

Normandie and Orleans have revolted back to France. Hmmm. In July of 1454, the alliance expires and Savoy jumps ship immediately, joining in with Genoa and Albania (who are currently at war with the Ottomans.) Don't ask me what they were thinking. I quickly re-up with France and Aragon. Both say yes and now I am the alliance leader. Sweet!

I'm looking down towards Castile as perhaps another ally and offer a RM which she accepts. There is some more trading going on, but it is tiresome. And in December of 1454, Burgundy annexes Cologne. They continue to grow.

We get a new leader in January of 1455 - another Angus. I send him to Lothian with some cavalry. And I now have enough to begin the small fortress in Northumberland. Construction starts immediately.

In March, I can support 16,000 troops so I recruit 2,000 more. But I look south and find 26,000 English on my border.

England1455.jpg

However, they have St Albans and the end of York's protectorate and who knows what will happen now? Dark days are ahead for England fairly soon. Their stab is at -2. Revolts do not break out immediately, but I check the risk screen and see it's 2% and 3% in a good portion of the country.

By January of 1456, the small fortress is complete and I start considering trying to get either Leinster or Brittany into my alliance, taking them away from England. Their alliance is up in 1459 and I have +110 relations with Leinster and +123 with Brittany. I'll have to consider it later as I get hit with another event:

Noblesseektosubjugate1456.jpg

I go with "protect the peasants" hoping the army I already have in Northumberland can beat them. I stick with the rebels that break out in there as long as I can and then have to retreat to Lothian. I'll have to take some time to regroup and then see another event happen for England - York resigns and Margaret of Anjou tries a coup. RR gets worse for England,

EngRR1456.jpg

There is a revolt in Yorkshire in April of 1456 but England squashes it fairly easily. In June, I raise military maintenance and head back to Northumberland in August,

1stBattleRebels1456.jpg

Freakin' rebels! I lead the entire way and then broke at the last minute. The good news is that the rebels fold away for some reason meaning it's over anyway. Lowering maintenance again, I am free to look around again.

1457 was a lowkey year. Some merchants were sent out again, a few make them in but it is a great hassle. I do join RM's with Bavaria and Hesse. And the earlier screenshot of Hungary annexing Poland occurs in September of this year. Other than that, I am simply looking south trying to figure out a way to get at England.

We move into 1458 and the opportunity arrives. In January, a revolt breaks out in Lancashire and soon after, Margaret comes begging to our King,

Margaretseeksaid1458.jpg

You better believe I support them. The King's mum was a Beaufort after all and it only costs us 50 ducats. In April, Yorkshire breaks out into revolt as well. The entire border is a mass of them now and it may just be my moment.

In August, I sail down the cost towards London just to check things out,

RebelsinLancandYork1458.jpg

They do not lack the troops, for sure. But the rebels are large numbers. I watch closely. In November of 1458, we get another diplomatic insult with Leinster with a CB for 6 months. Is it time?

The following year starts first with a slider move - of course, 1 more towards centralization,

Sliders1459.jpg

And Lancashire and Yorkshire have both fallen to the rebels. I reach out to France to get military access in the event I need it and they say...no!?! What?

I begin some small recruitment and see one of the rebels bands heading to Northumberland. I start to raise maintenance and then England swoops in and takes care of the problem...

EngBeatsRebels1459.jpg

...pretty handily too. Hmmm. Maybe it's not time.

Especially as I note I am running out of money yet again as long as I am at full maintenance. Any war would have to be limited and I'll need a bank to do it.

In July, in fact, I see I'll need a much larger army too...

Enghasplentyoftroops1459.jpg

Twice as many as I have now.

In fact, I did a little sail around England again and found 59,000 Englishmen parked in Calais.:eek:

And then we go to war...

ProvenceDoWFrance1459.jpg

Hmmm...more limited is perhaps the key. If anything, I might be able to raise some funds with war taxes. I honor the call and join France and Aragon at war with Provence, Lorraine and Genoa.

As presumed, I do not have much to do in the war other than moral support. I really can't afford to at this time because I have 50,000 English troops on my border. I try to find another ally and invite Brittany into our alliance and she says no.

The calendar rolls over to 1460. It's been ten years and I have not done one thing towards defeating England. Well, I did finance some rebels, I guess. But they were beat quickly and decisively.

The situation in Scotland,

Scotland1460.jpg

At least the English are still having troubles with rebellion. In fact, 1460/1461 should be interesting to watch as Edward pushes for his crown.

The situation in Europe:

Europe1460.jpg

Europe, 1460

France looks to be coming back which is a good thing. They will likely need it to protect against Burgundy, depending on how things work. I believe we are getting close to some historical decisions for the duchy. Charles the Bold died in what...1477?

And I admit to worrying slightly as I fear I might have missed a chance. Once Edward IV gets on the throne, I believe there are some calm years ahead, at least until the end of the decade. But the English forces are so damn large and I can barely support only half that number...and that's just on the border. I am deeply, deeply concerned about this enterprise.

I think it was done via scripted events. Hungary was in a personal union with Poland by that time...

Not after 1444 though. Even before that Poland would have been the senior partner as the king was Polish.

Also the English troops looks indeed worrying. Perhaps you should try to expand somewhere else before doing anything to them.

Charles the Bold died in 1477, so France must hold on 17 more years.
Will it be possible?
Concerning the English problem, I say wait.
One day they'll make something stupid (another war in Iberia maybe?)

It's sad to see a huge Burgundy disappear just because it historically did.

Interesting to see that although the English had the French broken, the French get two provinces back due to rebellion. That is good for you and the French, but bad news for England. Still the English really seem to have strong forces at your border so maybe they are focusing their military in the north and not in France, if that is the case you might soon run into trouble…

England does like its large armies.

I suppose the only hope is for superstack to waste away due to attrition sometime.

Yeah, stnylan is right... With the way England likes to have massive stacks in Britain itself, you have to hope that they send their 60k into Northumberland all at once and it attritions down a fair chunk. Then of course, the question is whether you will be able to defeat what is left...

Of course as you have played to 1475, you already know the next couple of chapters of the story. We eagerly await them. :)

I am deeply, deeply concerned about this enterprise.

Either the English will give you an opening allowing you to attack or you are going to need a backup plan. Where can you expand? Who controls Iceland? Is part of Ireland still not controlled by the English? How about Venice? In my game everyone else is having a go at them.:D

Coz1 - master of war (taxes) :+) I'm just curious - how much producing 1000 cav costs? 50-60? :+) Anyway, KUTGW, mass some Sons of Scotland 25-30,000 and conquer England - - "Fight and you may die, run and you will live...at least a while". :+)
