For Southern Rights, Hurrah !

I often thought about making an AAR for the WIP mod "North American Wars of the XIXth Century". And I have some time this evening so i'll start now !

This mod is a work in progress, lots of stuff are still to be implemented. But for now it really works well, just missing lots of stuff.

You can find more informations about this mod on this link

For those who do not know it, the title of this AAR comes from the chorus of the Dixie song "The Bonnie Blue Flag".

The settings for this AAR are :

Difficulty : Very hard
IA agressiveness : Agressive
Side played : Confederation

In every post, I will talk about one in-game month, starting December the 24th, 1860.

I hope you'll enjoy it !

Summary :

I) 1861
1) January : leaving the Union
2) February : the founding of the Confederation
3) March : tensions are rising
4) April : Starting of the war
5) May : Virginia as the early battlefield
6) June : at war, there is pain, death, and stress... Specially on Virginia soil !
7) July : on the road to Charlotte !
8) August : the battle for North Carolina part I
9) September : the battle for North Carolina part II
10) October : the battle for North Carolina part III
11) November : the battle for North Carolina part IV
12) December : the battle for South Carolina part I

II) 1862

1) January : the battle for South Carolina part II
2) February : strengthening the eastern front
3) March : back into North Carolina !
4) April : the battle for Tennessee
5) May : reorganisation of the front
6) June : a war without movements...
7) July
8) August
9) September
10) October
11) November
12) December

January 1861

January 1861

In December, the 24th 1860, the Union still include almost all Southern States. South Carolina is the only State to have declared it's independance, for now...

It's late december 1860. Tensions are rising in the Union after the Governor of South Carolina ratified the independance. It is clearly possible that one day war is coming to us from the Union. For now, South Carolina alone is too weak to fight. So I simply decide to modernize our agriculture to have more manpower able to fight, and I begin to try some militias.

[NB : at the start of the scenario, the CSA/South Carolina is very weak compared to the Union. You can't do lots of things to be able to fight. You can only take the first steps to prepare the CSA for war.]

In January 10, 1861, I am glad to realize that other States will follow our path. Mississippi just declared it's independance from the Union. They are followed the next day by Florida, Alabama on the 12th, and then Louisiana on the 27th !

January was a clearly bad month for the Union ! Four States decided to take their independance like South Carolina did. More importantly, we began to talk to each other about building something... What, we're not totally sure for now, but there is the clear wish to create a real now "union" together that will defend our States rights.

February 1861

February 1861

In early February, this great movement continue ! On February the 2nd, Texas take it's independance, even if Sam Houston made a speech saying that it was a bad decision for Texas.

but more importantly, during those first days of February, negociations succeeded ! Now, the great States of South Carolina, Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, Georgia and Alabama signed a provisional constitution, that stated the wish of the people to create a new confederation between the States of North America that wanted their independance from the Union.

In terms of gameplay, now I am able to trade with those States. This will clearly ease my task. But The Confederation is still not a reality ! It's a mere alliance with the goal to create a political union.

But things goes fast in the South ! In february 19th 1861, Jefferson Davis is elected President of the Confederation ! We might still not be a Nation, but we are clearly a Confederation that works !

By the end of February, the Confederation is a reality. Let's build on it!

March 1861

March 1861

On march 12th 1861, at last, the Confederate States signed into law the final version of the Southern Constitution.

In March 1861, the CSA is a reality... And the Union begins to fear the worst.

The unification of the Confederation assured me the power train more troops. Now I'm able to train cavalery (Three units at a time !). I'm also able to use more techs to have better weapons for my troops. As I currently see it, if the North do not accept to give back our military bases and doesn't stop to clearly insult us, war is the only issue...

April 1861

April 1861

As asked by Timmie, now there is a map of the entire Northern America in december 1860 on the first post :)

As the days go, tensions are rising between the South and the North. The Union made it clear that they won't abandon military bases that are on Confederate soil ! This goes again any international treaty. In the old Europe, any country would have already declared war for such a treason !

As the days goes by, tensions are also rising in the confederation... The newly formed government is under lots of criticisms from South Carolina. They were the first to declare independance, but yet my government was not able to deal with the Fort Sumter problem on the South Carolina cost. To keep our options open, Jefferson Davis sent General Beauregard's army to Fort Sumter. he is just waiting for my order...

As much as I would prefer to avoid war, I think that letting the Union decide when and where the war is going to start is clearly not a good option. I just sent the word to Beauregard. He will now bomb Fort Sumter until it becomes ours. And I am aware that this means war with the Union.

Of course in the Confederation, this decision is received with joy, because the government took the right path to defend our rights against the Union. But also with fear, as we might not win this war. Already, veterans from the Mexican war are coming back into their militias. In a few days they will be able to fight the Union as they did for Texas fifteen years ago.

I immediatly deployed 10 divisions of militias on the northern and western borders of Texas, where for now we have borders with territories that still are on the Union side. But I have to keep reserves for the border States that still did not took a side. We have to be ready if they take one !

Let's defend Texas !

Then on April 17th, Virginia was the first border state to join the Confederation into war. They could not stand the fact that the Union wanted to deal the debate about States rights through war !

In the end of the month, fights have not started. War is here, and Union troops are very close to Virginia's borders. In the South, our troops are in New Mexico Territories. Six States are still "neutral", but debates about which side going for are really important there. North America is about to know the worst war ever on its soil...

The situation in April 30th, 1861

Nice setup!

Question about your mod: Have you already developed any alternate options for Mexico? I see you have this country in map, there could be some nice choices, like war in Mexico that could affect situation in the North. For example, if French managed to secure Mexico quickly, Mexican Empire could assist CSA, while Republican Mexico could help the Union if French are defeated early in Mexico.

Well Asalto, this kind of feature will be implemeted... but I have to say your idea is great ! Mexico coming to war depending of which side the Mexican war is really great...

My idea in the mod for the moment is a "influence points", which will in the first steps determine which States support whch side... And later on which international country comes to the help of which side...

but to answer clearly, no those things are not implemented for now. They are in project, but I'm mostly focused on the war between the States, the mexican - US war and the Texas Revolution. Those are the three scenarii for this mod. And the first one is obviously the most important. In this one the war between the Union and the CSA is the most important part and I wish to complete this war as much as I can before adding other stuff in the scenario.

Thanks :) I like the way this is going CSA for the win! As I understand, most states have a certain independence...there are events in which they can join sides, become ''annexed'' by either USA or CSA or they get their own independence? What about tech teams and the like?

Thanks!

The territories were important to implement, because they were a real possibility for armies. It's just really risky to go there. 1) they add nothing. The Union do not own them, and the CSA has no production possibility to win in those lands. So fighting for them is clearly not something really worth it 2) it is really risky, as it borrows your troops from the eastern front, were all the important territories are, and were there is the more troops.

But going west might be something the South might want to take into consideration as it permits to attack the Union through Iowa and Wisconsin. I'm not saying it's a good idea :) I'm just saying it is possible.

For what I am currently doing, well I'm simply putting my weak militias outside of Texas to assure a better defense against a potential Union attack from Kansas or Arizona.

About Deseret, I must say I did not thought about it and I'm not sure what to add about this, if it would even be really that interesting... But any addition is always something I like so why not thinking about it.

Shame you don't get navy either, it would add more depth to the game I would think (although not sure about the historicallness of the time :))

This will come in time :) Actually for this AAR it makes me safer as the Union is not able to land in... Louisiana for example :D

is that a airfeal in oklahoma city?

Yep, I still have to delete some of those. But as there is no plane in the mod, it doesn't influence the game.

Thanks :) I like the way this is going CSA for the win! As I understand, most states have a certain independence...there are events in which they can join sides, become ''annexed'' by either USA or CSA or they get their own independence? What about tech teams and the like?

Tim

In the end, every State (but not the territories) will join one side. For now, the system is really simple : at the historical date, States join the side they were supposed to join.

But I began to work on the new system for the next beta version. In the future, there will be an "influence points" system. The North and the South will try through lots of events to add those points to prove their dedication to States rights. Each State will need a certain number of points to join one side (for example, Virginia will join the Union if they obtain 70 "Influence points", and the CSA if they obtain 60 points (as they are more favorable to the South ). On the other hand for example for Kentucky, this State might need 80 points to join the Union and 90 to join the Confederation ! I'm still brainstorming about that, but you get the idea I think :)

Added to that, the "events" that will permit to get those points will have their conterparts, especially for the Union. For example, Lincoln take a position that is about protecting States rights, that's great because then Tennessee might stay into the Union when the war begins. But ! Northerners might not like what he did/said. So less men might want to join the Union army, or riots or strikes might rise dissent, making then maybe more profitable for the Union to assure Northerners support than having Southern States staying into the Union.

And about tech teams and production, the Union have both of them right at the beginning to illustrate it's industrial superiority againt the Southern States. But the CSA gets militias when States join the CSA, as those Southern States prefer to rely on States militias more than the federal (or Confederal) armies. This means in the early game, the Union has some modern troops with power weapons while the South depend on well trained on often veterans State milicias, with less powerfull weapons. And when the CSA exist, then the CSA is able to do tech research and create more powerfull troops.

May 1861

On the 7th day of the month, the great State of Arkansas joined us. The next day, Tennessee at last decided to side with us !

But US troops are now in Virginia's territory as they crossed the border the very day the dominion State joined the Confederation. It's time for the first fights, around Manassas !

The first battle for Charlotte-ville and Richmond will start on the first hours of May 9th !

On the evening of may 8th 1861, the Union and Dixie troops know they are about to fight their first real fight of this war

This bloody battle lasted for 20 hours ! In the end, Richmond was safe, the US troops, too much confident, crushed, and our troops wanted to celebrate this great victor - the first battle of the war ! - But news came fast from the west. In Charleston, the Union made a fierce offensive against the troops stationed in the hills, and now we re retreating inside Virginia..

Victory in the east, defeat in the west... The war is gonna be long for everyone !

After thoses events, one more State decided with who they should stand ! North Carolina joined us on may 20th. Now, eleven States made secession from the Union !

During the last ten days of the month, skirmishes happened between the two armies now standing on the borders of Virginia and Maryland. It seems like the Union forces decided to not enter into the west part of Virginia for now, but let's bet on the fact they will soon enough. And we are ready for the counter attack.

I also saw a lot of US troops going west. This means they are already ready to fight throught Missouri and Kentucky if those States take a side. We have to also be ready to fight on those battlefields if needed !

During the coming month, we will have to modernize our troops. For now we have more troops more trained but without the proper equipment the North has. And in a few month they will also have more troops due to the fact they have a much more greater population and production capacity. If the war last, this means the death of the South if we can't have troops able to match the Union armies.

The west seems secure, and Virginia is for now the sole battlefield. All of this will probably change quickly in the coming weeks !

June 1861

On June the third, when the first regular troops for the Dixie Army were deployed, the US troops entered in Charleston. We immediatly launched a counter attack against those troops, but our militias were unable to defeat the modern troops defending hills, especially because Union reinforcements coming from Harrisburg weakened our right flank during this attack !

After two days, we gave up the fight. That's when the entire US front moved to attack Clarksburg. We launched a massive counter attack with all our forces. But the northern troops were too numerous together. We had to retreat once again out of Clarksburg.

But this gave us a real opportunity ! With 80% of the Union troops on the borders of Virginia moving or fighting gave us the possibility to launch our own offensive against Washington DC. After 26 hours of hard fighting, ours troops defeated the defenders of DC. On this June 11th, we are now heading to the Federal capital !

One defeat in the center of Virginia, one victory in Maryland

On June the 17th, 2200 hours, the Capitol was ours.

As June 20th comes, new regular cavalry is available. For now, I decide to keep them in the pool of reserves. As the Union seems to gather troops on the borders of Missouri and Kentucky, I am. Seven divisions are still in reserve, ready to go through the border if those States pick a side.

More importantly, on June 21st, the Indian tribes living in the south of the Indians Territories decide to join the Confederation. Sick of the open racism against Native Americans from the North, and open to our ideas that Natives must have their rights like any other State, they decide to side with us !

American Natives side with the Confederacy !

Unfortunately, on June 23rd, all my plans are under heavy fire from the US troops in western Virginia. As I launched on this day an attack against Clarksburg, US troops from Charleston us this to go through our troops on our left flank. Now I must deploy some of my reserves to close the now open road to North Carolina and Tennessee !

For now, I am able to hold the line. And I still have reserves in my pool. But I can't keep losing so much ground per month ! At that speed, they'll be in Alabama before 1862 !

West Virginia keeps bothering the CSA...
