As the title says; I'm in a very nasty Roman Civil War.

What's annoying is the breakaway general had stats 2 for martial, 1 for charisma, and 5 for finesse.

Anyway, it'll take decades to fully recover to my former position; as a newbie I was taken aback by the Civil War.

So, how do I prevent a Civil War from occurring next time?
I noticed the Populists in the senate were 80 to 20, that may've have been the problem but anyway, give me some tips, I don't want to be in this situation ever again.

In republics, populits are the main reason. Try your best to not let them get powerful (avoid decissions that boost populists, give populists leaning towards a faction the job they desire (for example: if a populist want to become a legate, then give him a one regiment army to lead -> not only will his Martial score go up by one, but he will also likely turn to become a member of the military faction, etc).

If you are absolutely certain you are heading towards a civil war, then do not be afraid to take advantage of that. Get characters with high loyalty (and correct faction) to command armies and to be governors in the important areas. Give some unloyal bastard a small army (like one regiment) to lead and place him in some province with an unloyal governor. Then replace either before their time is due, and you should get a civil war. If you have played your cards right, you will have control of everything that is important, while the unloyal bastards are cleaned away from the senate; what is more, you will next month get a bunch of random loyal characters. When the civil war ends, many of the rebel characters are thrown into jail (where their loyalty improves, and after a couple years you can (if needed) call them back to service again).

A civil war can be very healthy when you plan for it. Of course sometimes it can backfire (ie the CW starts before you have everything in right place), but even then you should have *most* things under control.

Save the game,
Load the game as the Roman Rebels,
Delete their armies and cause internal government failure,
Save game and load again as Romans,
Take your undefended provinces back!

Lol, I usually do this to AI countries, especially in Egypt/Seleucid Empire where I want the Ptolemaic/Seleucid dynasty to persist. Never done so in my own civil wars though, but that is mostly because I don't let the wrong people get too much power (nearly always have the king (when palying monarchies) or his heir as general, for instance, regardless of their stats).
