Some focus trees, especially older ones but also some fairly recent ones, don't really know how to deal with AH scenarios, even ones that have their own national focus trees. I know Paradox isn't eager to partially revisit older focus trees outside of big patches, but some of these have some pretty significant effect on gameplay.

For instance, the Purge the Kodoha Faction branch stops halfway if Germany isn't fascist. There's no bypass on the Tripartite Act if Germany isn't fascist, it just shuts off the rest of this branch, including the part . And since this branch is chosen at the game start and locks out the other ones, it can't really be undone or compensated for either. It doesn't happen a lot with historical focuses off, but playing as non-fascist Germany and having this happen is still quite weird. IT shuts Japan out of being able to attack the Phillipines, Indo-China and South-East Asia for no apparent reason.

Similarly, other focuses that are reliant on hard truths (like Germany being fascist) don't quite work either. Australia and South Africa can't pick the British Empire-oriented branches when Germany isn't fascist, since they both require the Purge the Rhineland focus to be completed; so if Germany turns non-fascist, Australia and South Africa can't do anything but go Fascist or Communist. And so on with things like the American focus tree, which is really dependent on everyone having just the right ideology. Even the DoD focuses (and related events) need some work in some places, since they're pretty reliant on a Fascist Germany too.

Now, much of this may be intentional, but there's just enough wonkiness in many of the game's national focus trees that it's hard to determine what is intentional and what isn't. As it stands now though, it feels like AH options are only partially implemented. I know it's hard to account for every eventuality with focus trees, but a little more flexibility can't hurt.

I agree. Focus trees are fun, but not if they can’t function together to form a coherent diplomatic game in ahistorical (or historical) mode. In that case, the game would perhaps benefit from relying on the diplomatic interactions available from the diplomacy menu instead.

yeah this is something we need to improve on. There are a lot of situations and something tend to slip through. if you check out the 1.5.1 open beta (sticky) we have fixed some of this already I believe. Make sure to bug report stuff we havent fixed in the bug forum and we'll get on them pronto. usually its quick fix, but hard to find kinda stuff

I just ran into this as Democratic Japan. The United States can still choose War Plan Orange and Embargo Japan, but they're not allowed to go for The Pearl Harbor Gambit? It works correctly as Democratic Germany; the US treats you as a friend.

On a side note, it was really dumb to get the US to release the Phillipines... only for the Phillipines to ignore me and not want any part of the West Pacific faction. Alternative factions in general being ignored by the AI in favor of the primary factions is very annoying (like the Little Entente, the Central Powers, the Pact of Rome, etc.), but that's another topic.
