Chapter III. The First Invasion of the Papal States.
March 14, 1495, the Papal Palace in Rome.
Guard: "Your Holiness, there is a messenger from the evil city-state of Florence here to see you, shall I let him in?"
Pope: "Those traitors! Yes, let him in, hehe, Florence will probably beg for forgiveness for the evil words they have spread about the Papal States..."
*Eight guards in uniform, with the coat of arms of di Medici on it enter the room, they seem to escort a rather old, wise-looking man, the Governor of Luca.*
Governor of Luca: "I, Governor of Luca, am here to give you this message, on the command of His Majesty, the Duke of Florence, ïero di Medici"
Pope: "Let me see..."
*The Pope starts reading...*
"Declaration of WAR.
We, Duke of Florence, can no longer tolerate the decadent behaviour of the Papal States.
We no longer support the Pope's claims to represent God on Earth.
By this charter, we formally declare war.
Signed,
Piero di Medici, Duke of Florence
Nicollo Machiavelli, Secretarius Florentiae"
*The Pope is furious!*
"GET OUT!! NOW!!"
*After they leave, the Pope calls in his advisor and the ambassadors of his allies: France, Savoy and Britany.*
"The traitors of Florence have declared war upon the Holy City of Rome!! We cannot tolerate this behaviour!! Finally, we have a good reason to annex Florence!!"
*All advisors agree, and the ambassadors get a map of Italy and start dividing the territories of Florence and it's allies among each other*
March 17, 1495, Dukal Palace of Florence.
Duke: "Well, you've got what you wanted. If it works, you will get the highest honour possible. If it fails, you will get banished."
Machiavelli: "Do not worry. I have everything under controll.
I will explain my plan once again...
The city-state of Florence has 4 allies: Modena, Milan, Genua and the Knights. The members of the alliance hate us, except the Knights. However, we cannot expand into Italy since this alliance has to be disbanded first, which is impossible since it only gets disbanded in 1699. Therefore, we declare war upon the Papal States. The allies will dishonor the alliance, since they don't like us and they fear France, so it gets disbanded, giving us a Casus Belli for after we are finished with the Papal States. We don't need to worry about France, they are to far away to get here in time. The Papal States may be large, they have a small army. The only real threat is Savoy but we can handle them... So if we sign the Peace Treaty, we will have the Papal States, and a Casus Belli against our former allies, who are no longer allied by that time because of the disbanding of the alliance, allowing us to expand even further!
Duke: "A brilliant idea, Niccolo, IF ir works..."
Machiavelli: "It will, Your Majesty, it will..."
Emilia, April 4, 1495
Everything worked as it should, all allies dishonoured the alliance, except the Knights.
Florentian troops march onto Emilia...
Florence starts to besiege it, but then the traitors of the Knights claim this territory as theirs!
Romagna, April 9, 1495
The Florentian troops quickly move on to Romagna, they assault it, but the assault fails! Discouraged they continue the siege, untill they get an alarming report from their home city: the defending forces of Luca had fallen! Luca was besieged by troops from Savoy and French troops were on their way to Italy, possibly to take Florence!
Luca, April 15, 1495
The troops came right on time, the troops of Savoy were almost finished with the siege! Savoy's army was eliminated but France was still marching, and it came awfully close to Florence.
Florence, the Marketplace, April 15, 1495
Machiavelli holds an enlightening speech, encouraging the Florentians to defend their hometown against the French!
The French were hold back, and troops were sent to Romagna again.
Romagna, May 5, 1495
Troops are back in Romagna, quickly gaining territory.
After a couple of weeks, they controll Romagna.
Florence sends the order to continue to march to Rome, but when a peace offer arrives, these orders are withdrawn.
Florence, the Dukal Palace, June 14
A message has just arrived from Rome, it states that the Papal States will give the Romagna to the Florence if the war stops.
Duke: "I am going to Rome to sign this treaty, the war must stop!"
Machiavelli: "But, sir! We are on the right way now! We cannot give it up!"
Duke: "How dare you speak like that! French troops are besieging Luca!!"
The Duke goes to Rome, though against the will of Machiavelli.
Rome, June 19, 1495
"It is a wonderfull day in the history of Italy.
To friendly nations shall stop fighting each other right now, and we recognize the Divine right of the Pope to represent God on Earth."
The Duke signs the peace treaty and gains Romagna.
Machiavelli's plan had worked.
The Duke realized that he could become ruler of the world with such a genius as Machiavelli and went back to Florence to discuss his next move there with the Secretarius...
