medici.gif

Chapter I.

The Prologue. (1492)

January 19, 1492, the Ducal Palace of Florence.

Guard: "Your Majesty, there is someone here for you."
Duke Piero di Medici: "Who dares to disturb my boredom?!"
Guard: "Someone called Niccolo something... anyway, he says he knows how to conquer the world. I thought that my interest you."
di Medici: "You are right, let him in."

*A young man enters the room. He bows for the Duke.*

The man: "I am Niccolo Machiavelli, 23 years old, I am here to serve you, your Majesty."
di Medici: "You do seem a little young... but tell me, how could you help me?"

Then Machiavelli begins whispering to the Duke...

"How interesting! This might get me out of my eternal boredom! I want to hear all about it! But first: dinner!"

Then, the two men leave the room to visit the dining room.
What happens there is not known by anyone.

Chapter II.

The Preparations for the war. (1492-1495)

The High Council of Florence, June 23, 1492.

"All rise for the Duke of Florence, Piero di Medici!"

*All members of the High Council rise*

di Medici: "Thank you. You may sit down now. The reason I am here is because I want to introduce you to someone. Niccolo Machiavelli!"

*All members of the High Council rise again, but the Duke commands then to sit down*

di Medici: "We, Duke of Florence and ruler of Tuscany, hereby decide that Our great friend, Niccolo Machiavelli is promoted to Secretarius Florentiae!"

*The members of the Council don't know what to do! Secretarius Florentiae is the highest title a Florentian can reach in his life, and now it is just given to a 23-year old!*

"Your Majesty, I object."
A rather old, wise-looking man had risen, the Governor of Luca.
"This man does not have the right to claim such a position. The Secretarius has to be chosen by the people, and cannot be given to a 23 year old!"

*The members of the Council starts to whisper to each other*

"SILENCE!"
*The Duke seemed angry!*
"Niccolo Machiavelli is a genius! It is in the interest of the city and the nation of Florence that he gets this title, but I now give the word to the Secretarius himself so you may see the benefits of promoting him!"

*Machiavelli starts talking. Half an hour later the members of the Council rise and start clapping their hands! It seems that Machiavelli was a genius after all.*

September 11, 1492, Palace of the Governor of Luca.

*The governor was eating his dinner when the messenger arrived.*

Messenger: "Greetings, governor. I come from the Ducal Palace of Florence. The Duke has decided that he need 9,000 men ready to serve in the army from your province."
Governor: "9,000?????? How can I ever get so many men to become soldiers???"
Messenger: "Do not worry, my lord. We will help you..."

December 19, 1492, the Marketplace of Florence

*Niccolo climbes to the stage*

"People of Florence!! The Nation needs you!! The so called "servant of God" is building up his armies! Probably to invade us!!"

*The speech against the Papal States continues for an hour and after that the people are cheering and all are prepared to volunteer in the army. In all other cities of Tuscany, Machiavelli holds his speeches, and the people start to love their country*

*In december, 1494, Tuscan scientists discover artillery.
The Duke, immediatly orders 40. Money keeps flowing in thanks to our good position in Genua, and the higher ammount of taxes that go directly to the treasury.*

*Then, March 14, 1495, the thing that everyone expected, happened.
The city-state of Florence declares war upon the mighty Papal States, who are allied with France and Savoy!*

Chapter III. The First Invasion of the Papal States.

March 14, 1495, the Papal Palace in Rome.

Guard: "Your Holiness, there is a messenger from the evil city-state of Florence here to see you, shall I let him in?"
Pope: "Those traitors! Yes, let him in, hehe, Florence will probably beg for forgiveness for the evil words they have spread about the Papal States..."

*Eight guards in uniform, with the coat of arms of di Medici on it enter the room, they seem to escort a rather old, wise-looking man, the Governor of Luca.*

Governor of Luca: "I, Governor of Luca, am here to give you this message, on the command of His Majesty, the Duke of Florence, ïero di Medici"
Pope: "Let me see..."

*The Pope starts reading...*

"Declaration of WAR.

We, Duke of Florence, can no longer tolerate the decadent behaviour of the Papal States.
We no longer support the Pope's claims to represent God on Earth.
By this charter, we formally declare war.

Signed,

Piero di Medici, Duke of Florence
Nicollo Machiavelli, Secretarius Florentiae"

*The Pope is furious!*

"GET OUT!! NOW!!"

*After they leave, the Pope calls in his advisor and the ambassadors of his allies: France, Savoy and Britany.*

"The traitors of Florence have declared war upon the Holy City of Rome!! We cannot tolerate this behaviour!! Finally, we have a good reason to annex Florence!!"

*All advisors agree, and the ambassadors get a map of Italy and start dividing the territories of Florence and it's allies among each other*

March 17, 1495, Dukal Palace of Florence.

Duke: "Well, you've got what you wanted. If it works, you will get the highest honour possible. If it fails, you will get banished."
Machiavelli: "Do not worry. I have everything under controll.
I will explain my plan once again...
The city-state of Florence has 4 allies: Modena, Milan, Genua and the Knights. The members of the alliance hate us, except the Knights. However, we cannot expand into Italy since this alliance has to be disbanded first, which is impossible since it only gets disbanded in 1699. Therefore, we declare war upon the Papal States. The allies will dishonor the alliance, since they don't like us and they fear France, so it gets disbanded, giving us a Casus Belli for after we are finished with the Papal States. We don't need to worry about France, they are to far away to get here in time. The Papal States may be large, they have a small army. The only real threat is Savoy but we can handle them... So if we sign the Peace Treaty, we will have the Papal States, and a Casus Belli against our former allies, who are no longer allied by that time because of the disbanding of the alliance, allowing us to expand even further!
Duke: "A brilliant idea, Niccolo, IF ir works..."
Machiavelli: "It will, Your Majesty, it will..."

Emilia, April 4, 1495

Everything worked as it should, all allies dishonoured the alliance, except the Knights.
Florentian troops march onto Emilia...
Florence starts to besiege it, but then the traitors of the Knights claim this territory as theirs!

Romagna, April 9, 1495

The Florentian troops quickly move on to Romagna, they assault it, but the assault fails! Discouraged they continue the siege, untill they get an alarming report from their home city: the defending forces of Luca had fallen! Luca was besieged by troops from Savoy and French troops were on their way to Italy, possibly to take Florence!

Luca, April 15, 1495

The troops came right on time, the troops of Savoy were almost finished with the siege! Savoy's army was eliminated but France was still marching, and it came awfully close to Florence.

Florence, the Marketplace, April 15, 1495

Machiavelli holds an enlightening speech, encouraging the Florentians to defend their hometown against the French!

The French were hold back, and troops were sent to Romagna again.

Romagna, May 5, 1495

Troops are back in Romagna, quickly gaining territory.
After a couple of weeks, they controll Romagna.
Florence sends the order to continue to march to Rome, but when a peace offer arrives, these orders are withdrawn.

Florence, the Dukal Palace, June 14

A message has just arrived from Rome, it states that the Papal States will give the Romagna to the Florence if the war stops.

Duke: "I am going to Rome to sign this treaty, the war must stop!"
Machiavelli: "But, sir! We are on the right way now! We cannot give it up!"
Duke: "How dare you speak like that! French troops are besieging Luca!!"

The Duke goes to Rome, though against the will of Machiavelli.

Rome, June 19, 1495

"It is a wonderfull day in the history of Italy.
To friendly nations shall stop fighting each other right now, and we recognize the Divine right of the Pope to represent God on Earth."

The Duke signs the peace treaty and gains Romagna.
Machiavelli's plan had worked.
The Duke realized that he could become ruler of the world with such a genius as Machiavelli and went back to Florence to discuss his next move there with the Secretarius...

Messenger: "Actually he is the Duke..."
King: "Yes, well, what news have you got then?"
Messenger: "Duke di Medici wishes your nation to enter an alliance with Florence and the Knights!"
King: "What can that little city and that little island possibly offer to the Empire of Denmark???"
Messenger: "As you might know, Florence owns all of Tuscany, and has recently conquered the Romagna!"
King: "And now you expect me to help you in your next little wars against some Italian city-states, right?"
Messenger: "Not at all! Florence has a great army and can conquer all of Italy if it wishes to do so!"
King: "If you don't want my help, then why do you want to be allied?"
Messenger: "We just want to be friends! A treaty of eternal friendship an in-hostility!"
King: "All right then... untill when does the alliance last?"

Messenger: "Small nations... We'll show you..."
Prince: "What was that, son?"
Messenger: "Eh... Thank you, Your Majesty. Goodbye, your Majesty."

Duke: "New world?"
King: "Yes, they call it Ameriga or something..."
Duke: "How odd... A new world..."

King of Denmark: "Oh hey!! Mister di Medici!!"
Duke: "Yes?"
King: "Nice place you got here! I'm glad I joined anyway!"
Duke: "Thanks!"

Chapter V. The annexation of Modena (1497)

Dukal Palace of Modena, may 1497.

The Duke of Modena and his first advisor are talking in the Throne Room. They have just got a message from Florence.

Duke: "Then, all is lost. We are not allied, we have dishonoured their alliance and they have a Casus Belli..."
Advisor: "We have to raise the number of soldiers!"
Duke: "No. We cannot win. We must not send more of our people into death. We shall not resist. Let them take Modena. my only concern is the happiness of my people."
Advisor: "You are a brave man, my lord. But we cannot just give the city to Florence! We will fight!"
Duke: "No! I will not allow you to let our people die in a battle that is already lost!"
Advisor: "Then so be it. I am off to France. I wish not to view my city fall into the hands of those Florentian pigs!"
Duke: "I stay here. I will encourage my people to surrender, and I will talk to the Florentians to treat our people right."
Advisor: "You do that. But I don't want to die. GOODBYE!"

Modena, July 4, 1497

The siege did not take long. The mighty Florentian army of 48,000 infantry had quickly overrun the Modena army of 10,000 infantry.
Modena had quickly surrendered.
The Duke was taken captive, but he was treaten well.

Florence, the marketplace, July 21, 1497

"I, Duke of Modena, hereby declare that I depose my Dukal titles, and give them to His Majesty, Duke Piero di Medici."

"We, Duke di Medici, gratefully accept the title of Duke of Modena.
But we give the right to the former Duke of Modena to become governor, for acting fair in this terrible fratridicial war. Our two nations are now united, and the leaders are now friends."

"I, Niccolo Machiavelli, Secretarius of Florence, offer the title of King of Italy to Duke di Medici"

"We, Duke di Medici, can only accept this title if all Italian Princes offer it to me. Untill then, I must gratefully decline. But one day, Italy will be united!!"

The crowd cheers!!

Romagna, November 11, 1497

"We must throw of the yoke of the Florentians! REVOLUTION!!!!"
"We cannot afford the taxes!!"
"We will not be slaves of those pigs!!!"
"The only prince we follow is the Pope!! Not that banker!!"
"REVOLUTION!!!"
"REVOLUTION!!!"
"REVOLUTION!!!"

But the mighty Florentian army was on it's way...
The revolt was crushed and blood was shred, for nothing.
18,000 rebells and 400 Florentians died...

Chapter VI. Restoration of Florence and fall of the Medici Dynasty. (1498-1501)

[/COLOR]
medici.gif

Florence, Palace of the Duke, January 17, 1498

The Duke and Machiavelli are once again talking...
Duke: "We did a great thing annexing Modena, BUT the Catholic world hates us!"
Machiavelli: "We need to send gifts to our enemies to please them..."
Duke: "But the treasury is nearly empty! You spend all of it on armies!"
Machiavelli: "I know, my lord. But we can take a loan..."
Duke: "NEVER!! The di Medici family is the richest family in Europe! We shall never take a loan!"
Machiavelli: "What do you think is best, a Spanish invasion or a temporary empty treasury?"
Duke: "I KNEW I NEVER HAD TO MAKE YOU SECRETARIUS!!"
Machiavelli: "Thanks to me Florence is to become a great power!"
Duke: "We don't have money to maintain that power!! You have wasted all of the di Medici's fortune!!"
Machiavelli: "Your Majesty, I have a plan. Trust me."
"You may enter, sir..."
Duke: "Who is this??"
Machiavelli: "This is the Secretary-General of the National Bank."
Banker: "I understand that you need a loan?"
Duke: "No, the di Medici family shall never..."
Machiavelli: "Yes, we need 1000 ducats."
Banker: "That is a lot of money, Secretarius..."
Machiavelli: "Trust me, I have a plan..."
Duke: "NO, MACHIAVELLI!! YOU CANNOT..."
Machiavelli: "Oh yes, I can. I am Secretarius..."

Royal Palace of Spain, February 11, 1498

A servant of the di Medici's enters the Throne Room.
"I am here with the greetings of the Duke, your Majesty."
King: "I don't want to have anything to do with that scumbag!"
Servant: "But, Majesty, he sends you a massive golden sword"
King: "How friendly!! I suppose I do like him after all..."

Presents are sent all over the world and Royal Marriages also increase the reputation of the di Medici family.

Dukal Palace of the di Medici's, January 1, 1501

Duke: "Well, Niccolo, I think you have done the right thing after all..."
Machiavelli: "Thank you, Your Majesty."

Suddenly the Guards start to move in the direction of the Duke's Throne.
The governor of Luca enters.

"Dear Piero... As you might see, your Empire is over. I, Piero Soderino am now the Duke of Florence."

"WHAT??? BETRAYAL!!! GUARDS!!! GET THIS TRAITOR!!!"

"Dear Piero, I'm affraid the guards are no longer loyal to you.
Maybe the people of Florence still think you and your master, Machiavelli, are honourable people. But I know better, and so do the guards! You have stolen the money of Florence and given it to this Machiavelli-pig!"

"You liar!! Everything I have done was to benefit Florence!!"

The Duke is taken away to Switzerland. Poor and angry he dies there, several years later.

Machiavelli was set to freedom, but he chose to go live in Spain. He did not trust the new Duke. The only Dukes he served were di Medici's.
Maybe he will return, maybe not.

Chapter VII. Proclamation of the republic and annexation of Milan. (1501-1502)

The Dukal Palace in Florence, January 1, 1501

Piero Soderino appears on the balcony.
"People of Florence! 9 years you have been terrorized by the di Medici and Niccolo Machiavelli!
Today this is over! Machiavelli and the Duke have fled! I hereby proclaim the Republic of Florence! My title shall be Gonfaliere for Life!"

Crowd: "DEATH TO SODERINO!!! WE WANT THE DUKE!!! ME-DI-CI! ME-DI-CI! ME-DI-CI! ME-DI-CI! ME-DI-CI!"

Gonfaliere: "Guards!!!!! get that crowd off of my market place!!"

The guards drive the crowd away, but the Gonfaliere has been made impopular, for life.

Modena, July 25, 1501

To mask his downfalls, the Gonfaliere decides to declare war upon Milan. All of his troops are in Modena.
His troops cross the Florentian-Milanese border and take controll of the city of Milan. On January 1, 1502, peace was signed: complete annexation of Milan by Florence.
But the world hates Florence now.
Even our allies don't want to have anything to do with us.
And the people in Florence, they hate their nation too...
In Romagna, a second revolt occurs. It was eliminated, but the Florentian Army suffered heavy losses.

Barcelona, March 1502

To Piero di Medici, ETERNAL DUKE OF FLORENCE

Dear Piero,

Please, do not lose your courage. We shall return, and when we return we have a hated Monarch which we can depose and a new province.
The treasury will be probably filled too.
The only thing I am worried about is our relations with other Empires.
I can't even walk over streets safely without my body guards, just because I am Florentian.
I know in which poverty you live, but think of what is waiting for you in Florence.
We must continue to hope, if we do not, all is lost.
I am talking to the di Medici family to organize your return.
They send you their best wishes and hope that encourages you in your isolation. I hope Helvetia remains loyal to the di Medici, we are planning your return soon.
Trust me.
