So, in an ideal world, I would like to see these changes:
  1. When upgrading a fleet, if your spacestation has 6 shipyards then it's going to complete the upgrading six times as fast (assuming you haven't queued up any ships or something).
  2. Someone said that when you replace Component A with component B, the upgrade cost is the cost of component B - 25% of the cost of Component A. While this makes sense for dissimilar components (ie, laser vs kinetic weapon mounts), I think that for similar weapon components (laser I -> laser III) the cost refund should be much higher, say 75%. This is easier to implement if you take my sections suggestion below.
  3. Upgrading should be incremental. In my last game, the Pyethroan scourge invaded a system where I had a fleet upgrading, 50% complete. That should mean that 50% of my ships have the new design and 50% have the old. If I had decided to break off the upgrade task, I should have gotten half my alloys back and had a fleet where half are the new design and half are the old.

One other thing I would like to see is more variety and impact from ship sections. Right now the only time I'll change ship sections is when I get my first 'X' Weapon' for battleships. I would argue that it's unrealistic to allow you to upgrade a battleship from having an artillery bow section to having a spinal mount bow section. In fact, I would be willing to be prohibited from modifying an existing ship's sections - if you want a spinal mount battleship, you're gonna have to call it a new name. You cannot upgrade a ship in such a way that the sections change. I would want each ship class, not just the battleships, to have one or more sections unlocked via later technologies. And I would make it so that different sections have variety in their utility slots, giving you more to consider when choosing ship sections than just 'what weapons do I want'. For example, perhaps the battleship's broadside bow has 4 large slots for shields/armor, but the Hanger bow has 2 large slots and two Auxiliary slots?

Yes... I think most of these ideas are quite solid.

The cost of swapping out components I think should be 33% for completely different component and 66% for the same type but newer. That would make it slightly cheaper than it is now overall and much cheaper when upgrading to the same type but not too cheap. Just my two cents worth of opinions.

The change seem reasonable... not too much to make it irrelevant again but enough so players should experience it cheaper and faster to upgrade.

What they HAVE to fix is so all yards work on the same fleet. While me personally can live by splitting the fleets up I know many people will not do that and then come complaining how long their huge fleets will take to upgrade.
