Currently heresies in the game are little more than minor inconveniences for your court chaplain and the occasional opportunity for holy wars. As they are all treated the same by the game mechanics, playing a heretic is not very interesting as the main beliefs of the heresies are not represented.
I would like to see a flavour-event for each heresy to add to their depth. Some examples follow:
  • Iconoclast: Destruction or vandalism of the icons of Christ Pantocrator and the saints, perhaps reversing the effects of the Orthodox icon-events
  • Fraticelli: Bonfires of the vanities, akin to those that accompanied Bernardino da Siena, reducing city tax by 40% for 2 years
  • Cathar: Renunciation of oaths and marriage vows, causing random divorces and independence wars (maybe too drastic?)
  • Lollard: Presentation of the Twelve Conclusions, reducing church taxes by 100% until conversion
  • Druze: Refusal to recognise the current Caliph as Imam, lowering moral authority by 2% each year for 5 years

What i would like to see is an expansion of all heresies where they can become a full fledged religions providing they have enough landed followers.
If a heresy turns in to a religion they should be given their own religious heads, holy wars (where applicaple, it wouldnt make much sense to have cathar holy wars for example) and their own special events and mechanics based on beliefs and church administration.

Also if a heresy turns in to a "real" religion it should stop all holy wars from the sister religions just like orthodox and catholic christians cant start holy wars on one another.

Maybe DLC material? Come on paradox make it happen! :)

These would be interesting. Most heresies don't get powerful enough in-game, except for the occasional one or two that manage to gain a foothold in one place, but that's more than enough. Even generic heretic events would be nice.

I think some mods could use them, particularly flavor ones (including my own).

This is a very interesting idea, I definitely agree with veetor in that being a heretic is a pretty hollow and boring experience. Giving the different heresies different values and events would greatly expand the depth of game-play and give them a purpose rather than them just being a nuisance.

Also what would think of having a system similar to LoR (whereby if you control certain religiously significant territories you can end the schisms and make your heresy the orthodox faith) but for the different heresies?

Aye, heresies could use a little fleshing out (though props to PDox for allowing them to go for the Pentarchy with Orthodox/Miaphysite heresies, including giving I think Nestorians, Monophysites, and Monothelites there own Ecumenical Patriarch/Coptic Pope equivalents).

I wouldn't say they're "too rare"... they should be rare. I've seen Muslim heretics take hold more than a few times, such as in the game I just started the Mali almost immediately turned Zikri (and are now getting crushed by the Almoravids). Pre-1.07 I also once saw the ERE turn Bogomolist.

I think Catholics are the ones we don't see too much heresy from, though I think in part that's because it's nearly impossible without serious player assistance to prevent their Moral Authority from climbing to 100%.

Personally I've only gone the heretic route once, forming a Zikri Persian Empire. It was fun, but in the end its only impact was that it allowed me to gobble up all my Sunni neighbors with a free CB. Try to RP it a bit and had some fun trying to annihilate the Sunni heretics, even managed to snag the title of the Sunni Caliphate for myself, but that's about it. At the end of the day, I was just a new flavor of Islam, not all that different from the one I replaced.

This'd be great! And letting a heresy come in from the cold as it were would be neat. Some of the heresies wouldn't really work with religious heads though. Iconoclasts for instance. And having Fraticelli with any money at all would be definitely odd.

Sidenote: one the rarity issue. My current Jerusalem game (holding Kingdoms of Jerusalem and Syria) has provinces with Catholic, Orthodox, Miaphysite, Monophysite, Sunni, Druze, Nestorian and one Lollard. It's actually rather pretty when viewed...

That'd be great. I can imagine the Waldensians, once they have established themselves in France and the HRE, forcing the Pope to convene an ecumenical council in Lateran to reform the church. And the Druze, with enough power, would want to install a new Shia Caliph from Hamza ibn Ali's dynasty.

I have played a game as count of Bornholm. I was so loved, that everyone in my court, and afterwards, most of Denmark turned Waldensian.:p

Good suggestions here, especially for Cathar and Waldenesian heresies. Perhaps if the moral authority of the parent religion drops low enough, heretics could have access to some powerful decisions, as stated by georgevii. I'm quite happy with what's been done with Orthodoxy, though.

I'd love to see some cosmetic religious leaders assigned to them based on who the most influential (highest learning maybe, or court chaplain of the highest ranked landed heretic) is. If the religions get big enough, they should form their own denomination with an entrenched church that then becomes distinct from the feudal hierarchy of that state.
