it's not a pile of junk, you may dislike it but it's not that abd a mech (could use more armor granted, if I could I'd swap out the AC 10 for a quartet of Medium Lasers and some heat sinks) and

It is a slow, melee-centered 45 ton mech with thin armor. That is a terrible combination of attributes.

yet again, you're not thinking, quite frankly there is no decent modern comparison because Lostech isn't a thing in real life. the Hachetman is the first new mech design in CENTURIES, that's a big deal for what it symbolizes.

First new mech design in centuries? Not in-universe, it isn't. Even if you don't accept the Marauder II as a new mech (when it is a full class heavier) there is also the Merlin and very shortly thereafter the Cataphract.

When it was first released 30+ years ago the lore for it stated that it was the first fully new design.
Various books later added more brand new designs.

OK, just had to abandon my first Flashpoint... Marik Alliance...guywho designed that one, must hate all BT players a lot... lol.. Its a 4.5skull Flashpoint, where in first two missions you can drop only 50ton mechs and you will face enemy Heavies and assault sniper turrets... and of course, there is a second mission ,where you have to drop again 50ton mechs, and this time, you need to destroy a convoy of Demolishers and SRM carriers protected by Heavy and Assault mechs (two Stalker LRM boats)... But thats all nothing, because there is also a target acquisition mission, with 7 turns to complete and 12 enemy mechs on high ground... no idea how its even possible to pull that one... as you need to stand in the open with all enemies shooting at you at will.... oh and of course, If by some miracle you did put these beacons, your evac zone is directly where enemy Assaults are... i've made it till second beacon, then they got reinforcements on top of my head and i just loaded earlier save and will never do this one again... long story short, if there is any unbalanced Flashpoint, this one is a prime example...
