Is defender of the galaxy ever gonna be fixed?
The fact it gives +20 relation is based on the time relations went between -100 to 100 but after the change to -1000 to 1000 its still only +20 its so minimal I don't even know why you keep it there?
I would suggest either remove it or increase it to +200 so it feels more adapted to the changes that has happened.

I think it would be more interesting if the relationship bonus was weighted according to the fight against the crisis.

If the bonus is too high at the start, it might be worth taking it just for that relationship bonus, so don't do what you are supposed to do with that ascencion perk.

Define Galactic Threats as:
  • Endgame crises
  • The Gray Tempest
  • The Horde / Great Khan
  • Awakened Empires (except for Benevolent Interventionists?)
  • Genocidal empires (Fanatic Purifiers / Devouring Swarm / Driven Assimilator)
  • Empires with a Colossus
  • Empires with the Become the Crisis ascension perk
Possible effects (obviously you don't want all of these, but there are a bunch of things I think could make sense here)
  • Opinion (Don't gain opinion bonuses from empires that are galactic threats, or their allies / loyal subjects)
    • Gain a decaying opinion bonus (capped at 200) whenever you defeat a ship or starbase owned by a galactic threat.
    • Gain a permanent opinion bonus for defeating the crisis.
    • Double the opinion bonus granted by the Mutual Threat opinion modifier.
    • Increased trust cap and/or trust growth from empires that aren't galactic threats.
  • Diplomacy
    • Reduced influence cost for defensive pacts.
    • Remove the three-empire Guarantee Independence cap.
    • Increased opinion, trust growth, and/or trust cap from empires you're guaranteeing the independence of.
  • Galactic Community
    • Increased diplomatic weight on galactic community votes to make defeating a galactic threat the galactic focus.
    • Decreased influence cost for Galactic Priorities.
    • More support from AI empires / increased diplomatic weight on galactic community votes to give you a permanent council seat or declare you the galactic custodian.
    • More likely to be chosen as the president of the League of Non-Aligned Powers during the War in Heaven; empires with the perk are offered the position after the Custodian but before other empires.
  • Warfare
    • Reduced War Exhaustion gain against Galactic Threats.
    • If any empire is attacked by a Galactic Threat, you're offered the option to join the war as an ally to the defenders. Doing so will give you an opinion bonus from the defending empires, and declining to do so will give you a broken trust opinion mallus. (Basically a free guarantee independence with all other empires that only triggers against galactic threats).
Restrictions
  • Become the Crisis and Defender of the Galaxy should be mutually exclusive.

Awakened empires fall under the "Galactic Contender" AP, which grants +33% damage to Fallen Empires, Awakened Empires, and the Desanu (L-Gate outcome).

Defender of the galaxy should stay as just being for against Crisis Empires and the Endgame Crisis. Great Khan isn't destroying the galaxy, just ruling it. A colossus isn't destroying the galaxy either. While genocidals do kinda make sense, it makes the perk FAR too powerful against them, and I'd rather it stay strong against the *actual* endgame threats than be nerfed to balanced against genocidals.

Oh, right, I wasn't really thinking about the damage bonuses tbh. Yeah those should only be for the actual crisis; I was mostly spitballing making opinion and diplomatic changes that would come up more often. I feel like ascension perks should have some kind of impact on how you're playing the game, and as it stands Defender of the Galaxy... doesn't. Giving it diplomatic effects that trigger in some other total wars or one aggressor vs. everyone else situations makes it relevant over a larger period of the game and has it impact your gameplay options more.

There's no reason you couldn't have the damage bonus only apply to the endgame crisis while still having other effects for non-crisis threats.

I generally see it as a bit of an "Oh shit" button. If a player crisis takes off, or the endgame crisis is killing everyone, you can grab the perk to give you a leg up.

I could see some mechanics like "you will join in on any war against a crisis empire", or cheaper/more guarantees of independence. But I think the diplomatic side of things should be as much obligations as bonuses: you are claiming to be the defender of the galaxy, now back it up.

Alternatively, could add bonuses whenever you kill crisis ships so you are just mechanically incentivized to fight the crisis. Unity or opinion seem the best options for that.

Stuff like "increased diplo weight in the GC for these specific votes" is way too specific imo. I think it would make sense to add an Ascension Perk about better influence/control in the Galactic Community, but I don't think Defender of the Galaxy is the perk for it.
