When you send a missive to someone else, and you see all the "+"'s and "-"'s that show up, it's actually kind of unusual that the numbers tell you what's going on. Keep the pluses and minuses, maybe change them into thumbs up/down, but add a new system for when there's something locking them out regardless of opinion/willingness. ("Political concerns,' for example).
