Quickly learn the game as the UK, then try USA in conquering (err... liberating) all of the Americas, Ireland, Iceland, Greenland, and taking all the British Colonies from them, India, Australia, and maybe Japan too, basically going on the course America might have taken if they were really Imperialistic back then.
After that perhaps Poland and/or Brazil.

Not sure if to start from a position of strength or of weakness, Russias my favourite of the Big Boys to play, but it migt yield a better insight into the game to play somewhere like the USCA or Haiti. In the Mid-Range I might choose Austria, or the Ottomons or Japan.
For now, I think I'll play the Ottomons actually, there's is an an interesting situation, they can go in all sorts of directions and have various interesting weaknesses to challenge a player.

I've reconsidered, I think I'll go for Austria.
They start off as a GP I believe, but the natural tendency will be for them to lose GP status due to both internal and external forces. They're in an interesting neighborhood, and played right they can probably seriously run that hood, clever interference with the Germanites/Prussia and Russia is a must to keep hold of GP status, and expansion beckons to the south-east. I don't play a colonial game so I need lots of nearby fruit to eventually pluck you see.
Having said that, playing as Prussia would be cool, to start a game with the single-minded intent of this time successfully usurping the UK as the worlds foremost economic and industrial power....
That reminds me how cool it would be to ride Japan to economic and industrial super-powerness with all Asia (and Siberia?) beneath my protective wing....

Austria, just as last time. Will be interesting to see whether they'll have a hard time to hold on to their assets with game mechanics only.
Belgium for learning, followed by Denmark(try holding of the prussians, maybe unite with the other scandinavian nations) and USA(then switch to CSA when the civil war starts).

3) Boer Republics: Conquer Southern Africa (expel the British). Promote foreign migration to Southern Africa. Extend borders north as far as Congo/Uganda/Kenya.

Sweden or France, theyre my two fetishes Sweden is fun, because I like to try to get Finland into my empire. High literacy helps in progressing and industrializing the country. Also there are some nice wars to be made with Denmark or the minor german states.
France, because while not being the easiest country, has a shot at winning. It's fun to industrialize France, as in the beginning there's a lot of manpower available.

A potentially strong country which is lagging behind at the beginning, like the OE or Russia. After that I'll probably play as Austria, France or Spain.
I'll probably go with Bavaria. Small,lots of potential and easy to manage so as to learn the tricks of the new game

I'll play as the Netherlands, so I can reunite the Low Countries! Those Flemish must return to the warm embrace of the motherland! ;-) Perhaps also (re-)create the great Dutch colonial empire, consisting of New Amsterdam, New Holland, New Zealand, Suriname, South Africa, Dutch Indies, Dutch Carribean etc.
I guess in my first game I will play as Prussia. Next up will be USA, Japan and China.
