I don't have the game yet, and am looking on advice on starting nations for a newbie. Seems to me the best bets are probably Sweden and Belgium. Both are fairly small, so they won't overwelm a newbie, yet fairly industrialized, so I won't be starting from nothing. Belgium looks particularly sweet, with a nicely developed armaments industry (selling artillery will bring in some cash). Am I missing something? Any other recomendations?

Hi,

I'd recommend Sweden. Belgium is placed in harms way, while you got loads of opportunities with Sweden. Sack Denmark? "Liberate" Finland? Or just get rich and bored the next 100 years? It's your choice.

I first started as Sweden and it was a very smooth learning curve for me. My first game I made alot of mistakes as you can imagine, so after I got the hang of things with production (what to produce and when) and the trade system, I started over and before I knew it I was storming France shores helping the poor Purssians from disaster. In only one day (yesterday) I feel very comfortable with the game, especially with the wealth of info on these forums! :D

Belgium, not to large as to be confusing and very industrialized already. Grab Madagascar early on to get some wood and you're set :D

Yes, Sweden always looks suspiciously consistent as a great country to play in these EU/HOI/VIC/etc. series. Oh, and the annexation of Denmark in the Scandinavian unification event in the 1800's is an ego boost addition, I guess? :D

Watch out for Russia in CK...;)

Hehe, I have yet to see a Norwegian on these boards who is entirely happy with the way Norway is treated in Vicky (Sweden benefitting from it) ;)

Back on topic tho'; The US is a very forgiving country to play. If you don't get involved in a war with Mexico (your choice), you get to do some industrial development and POP education and trade and stuff while preparing for the trouble you know will come in the 1860's.

That's the problem though, playing as US in early compaign. You know the civil war is coming up so how can you not prepare for it? Raising armies only from north, industrializing only north, maybe even converting pops in south to laborers/farmers? IMO it would be much better to play the civil war scenario if you wanna play US, so at least then you dont feel guilty if you kick the CSA's ass :)

Thanks, all. Looks fairly evenly split between Belgium and Sweden. USA is probably too big for my first game - looking for a smaller, more managable nation. My second game will probably be USA or Russia. I'm leaning towards Sweden, I suppose. Is their clipper factory a good early game money maker?

Eh, yes and no. It eats up alot of lumber and fabric. The fabric you'll most likely want to import, but you will produce enough lumber. The problem was in my game I couldn't find people to sell me fabric, so the factory was mostly idle. The Gotland state is a very good place to industrialize- it's got 2 POPs that are either already 100k or will soon be- so you'll have a near unlimited supply of factory workers (100k POPs will spawn new POPs, and when you convert those new POPs to factory workers, the original POP will form a whole new one) Just remember to keep that 100k POP a farmer.

If you build a fabric factory to supply it with sails. I built one because I had problems getting fabric from the world market. Gettig cotton is easier.

The liquor distillery had the same problem with glass, but clippers are worth more than liquor.

A furniture factory could also be a good investment, it was much better than a paper mill in my game. There is more demand for furniture. Both use lumber which you produce locally.

BTW, rafiki, knubbel, why don't you Norwegians try out my Nordic Variations that I just posted in the modification section. Hint you can play Norway as a Swedish satellite. ;)
