in the first few games not having the correct message settings yet always screws me out of winning.

(declaring of a war pauses the game, new tech pauses the game etc etc.)

Hopefully HOI4 will be balanced enough that you won't be crippled just by picking techs that make reasonable sense on the surface. What we've seen so far of National Focuses seems to suggest that as long as you pick with any degree of rationality you'll be ok and hopefully the techs will be similar. I'm really hoping that we won't have to begin researching stuff ages before it comes up in game just to stand a chance but, well, PDS have a bit of a mixed record on that stuff.

Things like Ideas in EU4 are great once you've played a bunch but as a first time player it's not clear which are worth taking and when you should think about investing in them over techs etc. Once you have a game plan then they're great but first time through you'll make a dumb mistake and waste a very precious resource on something that's useless. Yeah, that's part of learning the game and I don't want it to be super-easy to find the optimal path but I'd like there to be a little more signposting. Maybe a 'historical tech' option that highlights the path your nation canonically took and the player can follow that and feel confident it'll be ok, then later on deviate to try and do better.

1) Not use battleplans.
2) invade the USSR
3) Fail in logistics and then complain on the forums about their 30 panzer divisions stuck in the USSR.
4) Tech rush cool stuff without having the industrial muscles or gearing to produce significant amounts.
5) Not have operational and strategic reserves but put everything and the kitchen sink up front.

Misjudging how long something takes, or how many resources I need for something. I have fond HOI3 memories of trying to alingn a nation to my faction, for example, and realising that even by '39 they still weren't close to joining me :D .

This has to be one of the worst comparisons to Nazis I have ever heard... unless you are joking?? Denying the entry of a couple hundred non-white Commonwealth citizens is not the same as committing genocide against a group of people. The Canadians made some East Indians turn around. The Nazis put people into ...banned topics.

Anyway...

I will definitely not stockpile enough equipment in the first game I play. Then stockpile too much in my second game.

More like land war against Soviet Union...if this game is going to have as many provinces as HoI3, the movement times shown in the videos, and if Soviets don't surrender.

I know better, but some people playing the US might only think about the modern states when setting up their defenses and strategies, and then not realize that when the Philippines or Marianas get invaded, that's their territory getting eaten up. Worse yet, this type of mistake might make them lose the Panama Canal to the enemy, which would spell nothing short of disaster!

Mistakes that I will probably make:
Spend all my army experience into making "Wonder Divisions" instead of improving my normal divisions
Badly distribute civilian/military/naval industries and end up with a stronger navy than UK as Germany...
Bomb Pearl Harbour without having a navy capable of fighting the USA's on equal footing or without an army right behind it landing in Los Angeles and crippling the national unity of the USA
Spending political power badly
Play as France
Play as Poland
Play as Czechoslovakia
Play as Denmark
Play as Luxembourg and going with Allies
Try to remake the Hungarian Kingdom in its 1444 borders
Invading Germany and getting the full brunt of its massive Panzer divisions (happened every time in HoI 3)
Declaring war as the USSR just after having started the Great Purge
