Other things. Norway is in from teh start! Hurrah! And more provinces! But a Swedish core on Jemtland in 1453? That cant be right!

I think Jämtland is conquered as Sweden was in war with Denmark-Norway about queen Doroteas heritence from 1452 to september in 1453*.

Othervise it can be viewed of Karl Knutsson of Sweden and how he was crowned king of Sweden and Norway between 1448 and 1450 which may be seen as claims on Norway?

Edited: * , changed 1553 to the correct 1453, sorry for any inconvenience.

Actually Sweden could be in war with Norway and are currently occupying it.
Seems more likely, otherwise, where has the Norwegian flag gone?
It would also mean that there is a way to turn off soldier "icons".

As for the map, it looks okay for such an early state, but regardless, I hope there will be a button to "flatten" the map, and use different *skins* for the map. Yellowed old paper perhaps? A more modern type skin similar to HoI2?
a 2D political map for instance ? I know that I never played with the horrid green-yellow-brown-awful normal map of Victoria but always with the politic one...
And a 2D option could allow less favorized machines to use the game too.

Uh uh, Jemtland was ceded in 1645.

Well 3d, but looking 2d yeah. It will probably change, but with all the topography the map looks a bit "messy" right now. So a flatten option is a must!

What I like best about these screenies is that you click on "more sceenshots" at the bottom and you get -- NOTHING!!

Hah, Hah!

That'll teach all of you not to be so greedy!

And I guess you need to write more clearly what you are trying to say.

I ment that the player who control Sweden maybe occupied Jämtland on the screenshot as historically Sweden was at war with Norway and Denmark at the same time as the screenshot was taken (1453) as Kristian of Denmark had first forced Karl Knutsson away from the Swedish and Norwegian throne and then went pretty too far with what he wished about his queen Dorotea's heritence.

Does this explain what I am trying to say?

Sure, thanks for clearing that up. I got the impression you were saying that Jemtland was ceded in those early years historically.

I'm sorry, but I cannot possibly concede to the tone of general contentness with the quality of the interface and map as displayed on these screenshots.

Now, I know that this is an alpha build. And I know that Paradox has a year to improve. But, please, oh please, do use that year. This in no way captures the spirit of the campaign map of EU2 -- or any of the previous Paradox games, for that matter.

Instead, this is looking like the approximate point where RuneScape and the Rome Total War campaign map would meet. And that's not a compliment. If anything, Paradox should strive to properly translate the feel of its old 2D games into 3D, like Nintendo did with its Zelda, Mario and Metroid games. To a game with only grand strategy, the atmosphere is of utmost importance; in these screens, I feel nothing but revulsion -- not something I readily associate with Paradox games.

My advice to PE would be, don't sweat the initial negative reaction to how the map 'looks', and I'll give an example.

When ADG released World in Flames: Final Edition, they changed the map from having a simple color scheme for terrain (plains:white forest:green mountains:brown) to using textured color. The two biggest changes to the eye were plains (yellow/green fields) and mountains (mottled steel grey). To all of us who were used to the 1-5th Edition maps, the mountain hexes really jarred our eyes, and there were lots of complaints for a while on the discussion list. But you know what? After playing on the new maps for a while, the new scheme started to just feel right, and the old maps looked, well, old and dull. :(

I would second that opinion. No one asked my advice on whether these screenies should have been released now (shocking oversight on their part ;) ), but I think the trend in map and interface design in P'dox games has been a positive one. The maps aren't overly cute or artsy, but clear, functional and attractive. Let these guys do their work & I'll bet the result will not displease anyone.

The maps look very interesting. I am sure that they will be even better with another year of development.

But one request for Paradox: fix the formatting of the date. As it is now in the three pictures, it's all jumbled together with no spacing and bad punctuation:

Friday13,January1453

It's a little thing, but fixing the presentation of this and perhaps other items will go a long way toward making the game look more professional.
