This is really a no-brainer. We need customization options when it comes to our non-humans friends. Horses, snakes, mules, parrots, lizards, falcons; all with personality traits and 3D portraits! Story arcs involving your cat's romantic adventures, which will, of course, led to more kittens that you can name and love. There are so many options and features that we need to see.

Jokes aside I think this could be a good minor flavor DLC, adding various events related to animals or pets from different cultures or regions of the world, and maybe some simpler mechanics for interacting with your pet dog or cat or what kind of horse you own which might give different bonuses such as in combat.

Tbh id live this so much. You could merge it with my idea for a "Courtly Life" pack. Court fashion, family vacations, and much more in-depth pets would certainly all give the calm moments more meaning.

You're joking but this functionality would actually be really great for fantasy mods. Especially for non humanoid races or really outlandish ones.
For example dragons, or lizardfolk etc.

Though we still don't know enough about how flexible the 3D portraits will be.

I'm not sure it would change much for fantasy mods. Sure you'd get the interface so you could show your dragon and all, but that's the easy part no that the interface is easily moddable.
The hard part is to have 3d animated models.

Modding 3D models for series like The Sims or The Elder Scrolls has been a thing for decades now, so I'm not too worried about that aspect.

I would legitimately pay money for a robust horse breeding mechanic and deep falconry mechanics.

Pets and the like could easily be part of a full "court event" DLC, or a flavour pack level DLC of its own.

Cats, dogs, horses, falcons... all good choices. Maybe even a peacock.

It could include a menagerie option for the court, either just as a thing, or as a kingdom/empire capital building, or an add on to a palace.

Honestly the big game-changer for fantasy mods from this would be the animal breeding and specifically the ability to block marriages/reproduction between species. A lot of fantasy settings have e.g. dwarves and dragons as potentially playable characters but being unable to have kids with each other, but you can't do that in-game. Instead you have to rely on clunky solutions like auto-divorcing mixed-species couples and forcing their offspring to be stillborn. Which inevitably leads to bugs and weirdness (especially if you have, for instance, a human conquering a dragon province: the AI will present debutantes that half the time will be dragons, and then marry them, divorce them, remarry them, divorce, etc., all while leaving a trail of stillborn kids).

The downside is that it would make the mighty Horse Empire obsolete, but I suspect we'll survive.

I can see the value to allowing the marriages in some situations, but preventing the reproduction.

Treaty marriages between second or third sons/daughters to seal a peace or an alliance are a big thing in fantasy (and historic) situations.

And then there are cases (like elf/human) where reproduction could be possible but rare, or lead to half breeds (who may or may not be eligble for the thrones of either species).

A may_marry tag (or a may_not_marry tag) on the religions/cultures/species level would be good, as would a fertility_penalty_with tag.
may_marry / may_not_marry could be overridden by event of course for things like that war ending peace treaty.

Increase pet mechanics could be very interesting and I honestly think they might add that at some point, though probably not quite as much as the OP is asking for. I definitely see them adding pet 3D models before too long (maybe a year or two) based on comments from devs that seem to indicate they'd like to have them too. Even if all we get are 3D pet models, I'd be happy. Seeing your character with his trusty dog sitting next to him or her falcon on her arm in the character screen would be really interesting. Not sure how you would make a horse or camel look appropriate on that screen, but they'll think of some way to show the larger pets. Maybe even a pet tab that could potentially even show memorials for your dead pets. "Here lies fido. He died-o." ;)
