I don't like the eastern front that much either. Once you start going deeper into the SU the provinces get bigger. Then it takes a long time for the soldiers to capture provinces. You know you're gotta beat them but you have to make it all the way to the SU eastern coast to annex them. A nice "capitulation event" would be great.
Playing with Yugoslavia gives you an edge on the SU cuz you can go through Turkey and attack them while Germany focuses entirely up north by Ukraine and Belarus.
Germany of curse. IF the AI can stop me at hard difficulty level from conquering SU and GB then the game will be great.
Poland is not a minor?

Me, I'll probably start with Germany for my first game, then a European minor for a what-if intermezzo, and then a large Allied country for my third game.

I had at least 200 sessions of HoI1/2 thus far with every mod possible.
I estimate the following distribution:
- Germany 90%
- Japan 5%
- Britain 2%
- Italy 1%
- US, SU, minors 2%

So... yeah, I'll go with Germany probably.
I still remember the first two weeks of HoI2. After having crushed Russia a gazillion times in HoI1, I soiled myself in HoI2. I started several new sessions with Germany before I dared to attack Russia. The vast amount of provinces scared the sh*t out of me for a long time.
I don't even want to imagine how the humongous amount of provinces in HoI3 will scare the Jebus out of me.

I'll probably play the US and SU first, just to have a nice, easy time of checking out all the new features and experimenting with strategies and such. Maybe I'll play Germany after a few games as one of the above two.

The first country I played in HoI2 was Bhutan, and so shall it be in HoI3. Nostalgia plus the ability to play a (mostly) hands-free game first time around makes it a good choice.
After that, probably Germany. Try to conquer the world (certainly not easy with 10,000+ provinces)
After that, who knows. I'll probably go nuts and play around with all the lesser powers: Czechoslovakia, Guatemala, Belgium, New Zealand, whatever catches my eye on the country list. It's gonna be great!
