Im ok with Portugal not getting 3D art, I feel thats more of a necessity to the actual iconic historical participants (even if Portugal is a plausible entry to the war).
I do think they should have at least some 2D art for generals, ministers ans such though, from what I gather, Manuel (the Focci designer) pretty much confirmed this in the stream.

Daniel in last week's stream confirmed that Portugal wasn't going to get unit sprites. Although I agree that some art dev should come by and explain this decision.

Then I am gonna agree with this post. While it may not be needed, it would be fine having Portugese Unit Sprites added later on.

Oh, it's irrelevant? Ah, let's see here.

- Provided Tungsten to the Germans and Allies
- Kept Spain out of the war (Which despite them being shit, the war would take much longer)
- Leased bases to the British (Azores)
- Allowed the USA to use Santa Maria Airport as well

And also, Portugal played a HUGE part in the Spanish civil war. If we got a Spain rework, we'd DAMN well be better getting a Portuguese focus tree because it would make no sense. Portugal sent volunteers, let the nationalists use the port of Lisbon, supplied it with ammunition and logistical resources. They also insisted on to the UK that Franco was gonna copy Salazar's way, which is another reason why Franco was still in control of Spain.

If we didn't get a Portuguese focus tree, then there would be no point of a Spanish tree. Both work together along with the theme so well, there wouldn't be any point.

Also, alternative history. Portugal was a huge allies supporter because of the Anglo-Portugese alliance. This could easily lead to situation wheres Portugal can join the allies in an alt history scenario. With there being a decision to let Portugal join the allies for the U.K. as well in the game!

Point is, portugal needed one if Spain got one. It would be important to any spanish civil war, regardless. if you wanna complain, then we got Mexico to speak to as well. Mexico is worthless, and not needed as much as Portugal, but because of the sweet alt history that can be done with Mexico, along with Latin American Nations imo needing focus trees, I was glad Mexico took the spot.

Having more Focus Trees and stuff is nice, but Paradox should focus on real problems, and this game still has plenty of it. There are tons of Focus Trees on the Steam Workshop, the devs could work together with the community, so they can focus on important stuff, and the community on Focus Trees.

I even noticed at least one of the big name mods (still unreleased) redesigned its Spain tree following La Resistanxr dev diaries to blatantly copy aspects of the official network's design.

Let's not tempt PDX to make Portugal even more ahistorically stronger than they already have. ;)

Provided Tungsten to the Germans and Allies

AFAIK tungsten wasn't of particular issue to the Allies. Don't know how much tungsten Germany got from Portugal, but I imagine it was less than from other sources. Maybe @billcorr can provide further insight on this.

Kept Spain out of the war

Portugal had very little to do with Franco's very wise decision to stay out of the war. Entirely different factors played into that.

Which despite them being shit, the war would take much longer

Spanish entry wouldn't have particularly lengthened the war. Heck, it might've even shortened it. Another Italy, but worse, for Germany to feed and carry. And a whole lot more coastline to cover.

Leased bases to the British (Azores)
- Allowed the USA to use Santa Maria Airport as well

Which had trivial impact to the course of the war.

And also, Portugal played a HUGE part in the Spanish civil war.

I wouldn't go that far. Comparatively speaking, Germany had a huge impact just by lifting Franco's forces to the Spanish mainland.

They also insisted on to the UK that Franco was gonna copy Salazar's way, which is another reason why Franco was still in control of Spain.

There's no way England would've done anything to throw Franco from power, short of Spain joining the war, with or without Portugal's existence in the world.

If we didn't get a Portuguese focus tree, then there would be no point of a Spanish tree.

I don't see the correlation here. The little influence that Portugal had on world events in the 1930s-40s could have been covered with a few events and decisions for the time being, with resources better spent on nations that actually fought in the war, like Finland or Greece.

I have nothing against Portugal, but boy do I think that you're greatly overplaying their signifance. This game takes place in the 20th century, not the 15th.

I wouldn't say significant, and sure might not be, but honestly, i dont want argument, nor do I claim to be right, nor do I believe almost all of your debunks as fact. I checked sources from Wikipedia and I'll list them off.

Don't know how much tungsten Germany got from Portugal, but I imagine it was less than from other sources. Maybe @billcorr can provide further insight on this.

An article that explains the tungsten trade before and during the war can be found at:

https://www.researchgate.net/public...War_China_Japan_Germany_the_Allies_and_Iberia
  • Germany imported tungsten from China using both sea and land routes (through the USSR).
  • After the fall of France, Germany turned to Iberian sources
Before the war, Germany imported most of its tungsten overland from China through the USSR
upload_2020-2-11_8-36-40.png

(from the article cited above)

China was the leading producer of tungsten before and during WW2.

Of note, Portugal was the 7th leading producer of tungsten in 1936. 1936 is the year that HoI4 (version 1) based much of HoI4's resource distribution. In version 1, the developers depicted the game's resources and proportions based on real world production numbers.

We'll see how Portugal's designer @ManoDeZombi depicts Portuguese tungsten production in LaR. :)

The discussion how significant Portugal was is completely pointless now. The devs have decided that Portugal (alond with French and Spanish factions) will get the spotlight in the new DLC while other countries were not included.

What the OP demands (and we support) is that Portugal get represented properly, with own sprites and unique portraits for their leaders and commanders. SO FAR there are ZERO signs that there will be any. In the recent streams there were no spites and they said there were none.

The devs could calm down the situation by showing the sprites and portraits in the Dev Diary tomorrow.

Honestly, there should have been time to create Portuguese sprites as Portugal was confirmed last October which means the art team has known that Portugal was possibly going to get sprites. Either, there was a backup on the Spy portraits, Spanish and French portraits, and armored cars or they willfully decided not to do Portugal. Only one of these I think the community is going to weakly accept the other is just spark outrage.

Its been almost an unspoken rule that when a country gets a NF, they get all the art as well. For Portugal to not get sprites and serious level of art, would be strange and need an answer.

remember that the spy portraits are using a new CK2 like portrait system that puts parts together to make unique faces, so they probably had to spend a good deal of time training up to make artwork that worked with the new system. when the artist was on stream i may have misunderstood what she was trying to say, but it seemed like that getting that up and running took up most of their time.

It doesn't really matter what the devs do, though. People will always be screaming about something around here even if what they're ostensibly complaining about has been or is actively being addressed.

Not to downplay the concerns people in this thread have, which in my opinion are legitimate. It's more about the hyperbole, hysteria, and sheer rage some people display over things that can, at most, be called disappointments. Thankfully, this has been mostly absent from this particular thread, but it's been rampant around here.

There are some good ones but either they are very historical and limit the possibilities of the country or they are extremely over powered. I feel like PDX strikes a good balance between the two.

The OP's tone was a little hostile but he's not wrong about the fact that at the very least Portugal's generals should have unique portraits. My computer can't handle the sprites but those are important to a lot of people so they should be included too. I don't want another Canada on our hands. I know we don't make the game but it shouldn't be hard for the devs make a few portraits between now and release, or include them in a free update post-launch, since it seems like something that should have been in La Resistance.

Well probably Portugal could use 5 generals and a FM given how much manpower they can mobilize through their NF but yes, PDX should at least tell us what they will do about the situation. Artists cost money and if it's reasonable packaged I pay money for it (not 100% happily but still), I actually made a suggestion about a minor Sprite pack with more tanks, etc. Like the axis tank pack, they could pack the Portuguese sprites and generals in there and sell it. But I want them, don't care how.

IIRC Portugal was a last minute addition for the expansion, which probably explains why they didn’t have time to make art.

Like the initial announcement was just France and Spain, with them counting Spain as two countries. No hint at Portugal at all until several months after the announcement of the expansion.

When Portugal was finally announced, the focus tress was still being worked on so they couldn’t show it off.

Was confirmed in this week's dev diary thread by the producer that Portugal is getting the missing 2d art.
Yes but we need to keep pressure up so they also fix 3D art at one point

I mean at least ONE infantry sprite would go a long way.
