I'm getting somewhere...

Just wanted to say thanks for all the advice in previous threads. Got a game that so far is ticking along nicely and doesn't have the AI just making things overly annoying.

Most of my games have collapsed by 1520 with me getting into an awkward spot and just giving up. Excommunication, high rebellion counts, wars going tits up, poor money control, or a mixture all causing me to get that annoyed I'd start again.

So far this latest game seems to have finally cracked the nut and actually had a bit of luck to come out of things in what I THINK is a strong position.

The year is 1533, I'm at stability 3, 1600 ducats in the bank, 19.2 BB, +97 prestige, 85 legit, ranked number 1.

PU's with Castille who have major amounts of territory, and Naples who have about half of Italy.
Allies are The above two ( obviously ), three vassals ( Foix and two indian countries), Papal State and I think one of the french countries. (the two countries I formed in india both kicked the alliances)

I did my, now usual, tactic of getting GWTNW as early as possible (first idea), then invading one of the American tribes. The idea being to get a jump on the opposition by having cores popping up over there by the 1480-90's...

Territory wise this is where I'm at :-

Europe, Burgundy is PU'd with Sweden and seems to be sitting there doing nothing much.

USA - am I right in thinking I can colonise at my own pace now as it's unlikely people will colonise from the west?

7212531254_6a2f9a791b.jpg

India - went after india for ultimately the trade benefits and in response to a mission. I went for Ceylon first with an attack straight from the Atlantic Islands ( don't have ANY african mainland continents). Had some trouble because the country in the middle got defeated in a war but it never peaced.. so ended up vassalising the attackers in a seperate war and thus freeing up the country for invasion later. India is a bit messy though, got a few allies because I like breaking up countries by forcing them to release nations. I did this with france too hence how I've ended up with France being so small.

7212531024_a23b5c0733.jpg

So that's where I am, but given it's going pretty well need to formulate a plan as to where to go now. Never got this far properly before so would really appreciate some advice.

I'm thinking ultimately ( say by 1600) I'd like to have integrated both my PU's (if at all possible), changed religion ( got myself stuck a bit there, I'm defender of the faith at the moment), expanded my US holdings (filling in the holes first) and conquered India.

But really don't know if thats a good plan, or if I'm in danger of my pack of cards collapsing around my ears!!!

thoughts?

All I'd say is watch that BB, if you go over the edge be prepared for the world to descend on you with fire (and of course the sword).

Not going to happen, no-one in Europe has the colonial range to get to the American west coast, and no-one in Asia is interested.

I don't see how you could mess this up. The game is pretty much over, no rivals are left. Now that you grasped playing as a major power I suggest you try a medium one, like Poland, Hungary, Aragon etc.
If you plan on continuing this game, you can try to ditch DotF by lowering your prestige and hoping someone else will take it.

Game's not over as long as Burgundy's not subdued. That Austria can be a threat if it snakes.

in the americas, aside from the CoTs, the best places to colonise are the caribbean islands, since they are guaranteed to give you a plantation trade good. when you expand in india, dont conquer bihar province, as this will lose you the "east indian trade route" bonus.

Yes and no. Castile may colonize South-America or the Carribean. But with that PU, that may not be too bad.

He was asking about America being colonised from the west, ie the Pacific coast.

She ;)

Ok things just fell apart...

I just can't get stability back up after changing religion... no matter what I do I keep getting stupid pointless and well frankly idiotic (I mean who cares about a comet!!! that can't undo 10 years of investment!!) events that knock it back down. :(

As a large (colonial) power I would stick with Catholicism.

I only change if I am still relatively small at the reformations and will only start growing after it.

Build churches in each and every single one of your provinces by default right after the level 1 fort and one point of stability should not cost more than 2 years of investment, tops.

Show your NIs. ^^

This is probably where I've gone majorly wrong :p

QFTNW - went for first for the reasons in the OP, allows me to get the American tribes early.
Bureaucracy - cos I needed cash!!!
Humanist - cos I'm tolerant :p ( and not too bothered about religious stuff)
Col Ventures - obvious really :)

I had spotted the benefits of the church and initially had built a few.. but umm yeah.. lagged behind recently.. so that's task number one.

Don't integrate that Castille, you'll get 1 infamy per province which will wreck your empire. It's almost always better to just wait for an inheritance, but especially so when the PU partner is that big.

Looks good, if you want to take your research and income to another level try trading, that infame around 20 equals about 40% less compete chance. You could try to stay below about 7 infame, expanding through get-a-core missions, diploannexing, core events and go free trade slider to be able to have 5 merchants in many CoTs. Trading is also like a game in the game.
