Thanks so much for the input! I shifted my government more to the "centralized" half of the slider and my people FREAKED! They rebelled, took over one of my castles and now own their own province, right smack dab in the middle of Portugal. I hired a general, recruited some troops and crushed that little rebellion. Castille was not impressed and declared war on me!

As Portugal, keeping peace with Castille is your one overriding strategic concern.
You should keep relations above 100 and maintain a Royal Marriage and/or military access if at all possible.

The reason being that if you declare war on someone with good relations (100+) you take a stability hit of 1 point. With great relations (150-200), it is two points. There is another 1-point hit for a Royal Marriage, and if they have military access through your lands, that is -3 points.

The harder it is for them to declare war on you, the least likely they are to do it, except incidentally, as a result of an alliance for instance. At the very least, they won't attack you without insulting and breaking the treaties you've signed, which gives you fair warning.

In the current situation however, you should colonize the Caribbean, and consider becoming an American empire, to insure yourself against Castille or another major power coming after your European lands.

Remeber my first games(with EU2). Started as my own country, that is a very bad ide when you come from Norway. I quit rather shortly and shelfed it for months before giving it another go. This time I wanted and easy game and went for the biggest country in the map, Ming. I hadn't discovered the forums or th patches yet, so I played on 1,2 and discovered the loan shark exploit. Lending all my money to Japan for 10 years at the time with 10% interest, effectivly doubleing my money every 10 years. With all these money I went out declaring war, takeing provinces and annexing small asian states, left and right. I really didn't undesrstand why I was so little liked around the world.

Until one day my BB got so bad, Japan refused tro pay back a loan I gave them. I got really made and declared war on Japan. Since I had a rather small fleet, I crashed and burned pretty fast and ragequit. Then went to Portugal, lovely game about colonizing supported by loanshark money from Spain. But then I discovered the forums, the patches and my happy days of loansharking was gone. I think half of my post count must have been some sort of question in the EU 2 forums. I remeber Lawkeeper, Daniel A and Robin74 or something, helping me out a LOT. there was a few others too, but I forgot their names.

Just keep asking question. A mix between playing and asking questions is the best way to learn.

I'm not hundred percent certain, but I believe he tried to beat France in the mainland and just kept going and going until bankruptcy.

I'm surprised they had the manpower for that. In my second game with England I managed to win the Hundred Year's War, but only after both France and I had ground our armies down to nothing. It was the first time I learned to appreciate mercenaries and merging regiments.

Definitely. I learned the game playing as England and my first attempt with Milan went badly wrong because I neglected diplomacy. That was fine when fighting Ferarra and Urbino. It became a problem when sharing a border with France and Austria, who eventually ganged up and crushed me.

Nope, it's worse: it's MINUS FIVE points, for attacking with military access. Giving it to dangerous nation is a goodish way to protect yourself.

That is true, but you can cancell it with no penalty. So assuming you have an extra diplomat and and extra month, you don't have to take that hit, but it works well as protection from the AI.

in my first game i had no idea how to merge armies, and because i had no idea how to select all the armies in a province at once i just moved them around one by one.

It sucked.

haha, thats serious micro management, could maybe compete with online starcraft gaming, where we measured actions per minute, (APM) IIRC 100-200 APM meant you were skilled :D

Ok, I got smeared twice as Portugal, so I'm trying Castille right now. It's about 1410 or so and I'm still incompetent. :D

I saw a mission to rid the infidels and make Castille whole so I made some units, recruited some infantry and took over those 3 little Muslim provinces. One is Gibratar(spelling?) but I cannot remember the names of the other 2.

I keep beating them over and over but some how more Muslim units keep showing up. I have my navy in the area. Maybe I should blockade the ports there?

One thing I don't understand is that if I control a province I took over how do I make it part of Castille like the mission instructed me to?

And what happens if I don't feel like doing a mission?

Sorry for all the questions, an incompetent king like me needs help. :D

If you've won sieges in the provinces of Granada, Almeria, and Gibraltar, then the units that are coming into your country are probably being brought in by ships from the Muslim countries of North Africa. I can't remember whether Castille has a big enough fleet to make sinking the Arabs' ships viable.

One thing I don't understand is that if I control a province I took over how do I make it part of Castille like the mission instructed me to?
Click on the province. Select the "Sue for Peace" option, and now you can tell the country that owns the province what your demands are.

In the case of the Reconquista mission against Granada, you want to select "Annex". Usually, though, you'll want to go to "Demand Tribute" and tell the enemy what you want, because annexing whole countries is often impossible (or dangerous! watch out for Infamy).

And what happens if I don't feel like doing a mission?
Click the "cancel mission" button in the mission tab of the menus behind the shield in the top left. You can only do this once every five years, and it costs five prestige.

Alternatively, ignore the mission and just do stuff :)

I started as Castille on my first try and I still messed it up. Aragon was too powerful for me and destroyed me. I'd recommend starting as Russia, you get high manpower, a large land mass, and easy conquests. The only problem with Russia is keeping your infamy down. My first Russian campaign resulted in an empire that spanned all the way to China with some provinces in northern India and around 15 vassals. The only problem was my infamy was all the way up into the 80's or 90's.

Starting as Russia (Novogrod) in 1399 in the latest expansion is very poor advice to a beginner, as the hordes will come in and crush you within a few months.

Castille, Portugal or England are all viable choices, or any of the majors in any of the later scenario's.

UPDATE: And Infamy will kill you if you go over the limit in the later expansions. It will cause rebellions, low stability, low legitimacy, low prestige and severely reduced tax income, among other things.

As Castille, go after Grenada (the three little provinces) first and annex them as explained above. Use your navy to smack around the Moroccans, but don't go into North Africa if you don't have to. Sink their boats and they won't be able to hurt you. Then sit and wait until they tire of the war and offer a white peace.

Meanwhile, get your relations with Portugal and Castille up and offer them Royal Marriages. If an opportunity comes along, try and claim their thrones. Go to war for it when the option presents itself. If you manage this, you're set for the remainder of the game. France or England are the only remaining threats. France you can easily hold off by defending the mountain passes in the Pyrenees, and you should have a fleet sizable enough to keep the French in line.

At this point, you set yourself a goal, and you see what happens if you try. If you fail, try again, if you win, jack up the difficulty. The game is a sandbox. The missions are only there to make sure new players don't get too lost, and to give the AI incentive to behave semi-historically.

I'm now slugging it out with Morroco. It was tough for a while but they are starting to get beat back on the high seas. I made peace with Grenada but somehow they still own it. I must have messed up somehow on making peace with those guys.

I'm down to 34 gold too. Kinda reminds me of chess. Easy to learn but hard to win.

Ah, I remember my first game. I had played EU:R before, and so i got EU III hoping for a more polished, non-spinoff version, and I excitedly opened the box and.. well..

Anyway, I played my first matchup a little bit later than 1399, because I looked through all the bookmarks first. My first game was actually the Byzantine Empire in 1405, and I got incredibly lucky. Not knowing to block the straits, I left my navy in port. The Ottos sieged and occupied Thrace and pushed my fleet out into the strait anyway and I won the war through sheer luck.

As for Granada, did you click "Annex" or "Demand Tribute" and simply demand all their provinces? Annexing is how you get their capital city as well.
