Like I said, I really don't feel like an etymological argument, but OED is not the only place to look. I literally (and yes, as in actually) watched a conference filled with linguistics professors debating this - most of the ones on the side of "no it isn't" tended to be the people that get uppity about contractions.

Sad news OP - if you do manage to make a triumphant comeback, will you continue to update this thread?

I gave up on the campaign. Might give it another go some other time.

Although I am sure than in the spirit of the whole 'I cant be wrong and if I debate some more someone will be convinced I'm not' this thread might see another two or three pages of the debate on whether my use of the word 'literal' in the OP was proper or not.

Thank you everyone that subscribed and enjoyed reading it.

Good luck on your campaigns.

Looking at your screen it looks like you committed the gravest of CKII mistakes. The one where you don't have at least 1-2k gold in your bank to hire the merc crew assault squad space marines. If you try again, I think you should really try and get your holy order ASAP (it looked like you had some chances but were to timid to take them). Playing something like this, or Zunbil or Zoro, you have to throw punches and keep on throwing them until you blobbed hard. But I think you inspired some people here to give it their own shot, well done. You also should be able to get a BYZ alliance as long as you don't have any of their de jure lands.

Also depending on the CB, you may be able to take the Convert to Attackers religion "get out of jail free" card, and then just convert back to Messalian.

Not everyone can afford saving of 1-2k gold...

If not the HW from the Abbasids, it would be a Jihad sooner or later, that would be unstoppable... You could have been allied to the Byzantines, but even with them it would be very difficult to stop a Jihad. Maybe 876 bookmark would be more forgiving, as the Muslims are more split?

Eh, he had plenty of time + you can call always draw on the jewish banks. It's not that hard to save up gold, especially since he should have a silkroad trading post in Antioch raking in the doe.

It's certainly possible. I'm doing pretty well in my currently Nestorian game; tempted to go heretic, now that I think about it. (867 start, by the way.)

I think the Holy Order requires more than just holding Jerusalem and Baghdad, though. It's been 60-70 years, and I've still got nothing.
