After almost two to three years of trying (and failing At one point or another), I have been able to establish a Messalian Kingdom.

A quick search into Messalian history shows they lived in the Mesopotamian river banks and Asia minor (eastern Turkey). Before branching out into Bulgaria etc.

With that in mind any and all attempts for creating such a kingdom meant I had to create it along either the Tigris or Euphrates rivers. With the best bet it being someplace close to Antioch to get religious authority.

The avid among you will notice that area of the map is not the most welcoming to anything non-Orthodox Christian or Muslim. Leaving me between a literal 'rock and a hard place' with both the Abbasids to the south and the Byzantines to the north. Either able to literaly crush any county/duchy I have to build upon.

With my latest playthrough though a number of factors played to my advantage:

A-The Byzantines were pretty occupied with a pretty strong Armenian uprising and eventual Armenian Kingdom.

B-Abbasids being too busy either trying to invade the Byzantines, expand in the Sind region or quell a few shia/ decadence revolt uprisings.

With two very closely timed decadence uprisings I was able to snipe two duchies from the Abbasids and their (much weakened when they started successors). With the final nail in the coffin being a duchy of Allepo that I snatched from some Emir that decided to go independent rather than become a vassal of the Abbasids replacement empire.

With only my second ruler of the game I was able to maneuver between the two monsters (Abbasids and Byzantines) and carve out three duchies in order to finally create the Messalian Kingdom I always dreamed of having.

Note that no console commands were used, this is a straight up ironman Charlemagne playthough on the vanilla game.

Although some might not think much of it. I am very proud to finally do it. That area of the map is murder if you are anything but a Muslim/ Orthodox Christian or Miaphysite Cristian....to pull it off....the cherry on my CK2 cake.

Very nice. You just need to find a way to expand. One bad holy war from the Abbasids could spell disaster though.

If it was me, remember Messalian is still Christian. I'd swear fealty to the Byzantines and slowly work my way up to Emperor. A Messalian Roman Empire would be a sight to see.

Nice. The obvious disadvantage of your location is that both the emperor and/or Caliph will gain the "desires" trait.

One thing you need to take advantage of asap is the independent emir in Cypress... invade and don't wait. It will be your safety province to hedge against the invasion of either empire.

I'm trying something similar, starting in Socotra, but that seems "easy mode" compared to what you are doing. Even though I managed to conquer all territory of Abyssinia + Duchy of Sana (critical for the proper amount of cash and levies), I'm still unable to convert enough provinces to get rid of frequent Sunni uprisings...

Well done! I've just started my own Messalian game at the Charlemagne start in Scotia, because that's the only Nestorian ruler I've been able to find. How did you manage to convert to Nestorian so far up the map?

Nestorian starts with low moral authority, so Messalian heresy can appear in your province. I think OP did this or he created a custom character.

Actually I expanded towards the muslims to the south and east because the Byzantines are not joke. But the Muslim infighting gives me opportunities to expand every once in awhile.

The problem with Socotra as far as either Nestorian or Messalian dynasties is you are far from any holy sites. This leaves your religious authority far to low and lends itself to the upsrisings you mention.

My plan was to secure a holy site ASAP and the closest I could think of (to be inline with history as much as I can) was Antioch. You could try Baghdad but that would not bode well in a Charlemagne start.

Well for the longest time I have tried to establish a Messalian ruler in that area around Eddesa. That area in particular is along the lines of where the Messalians lived historically. Only problem was before Charlemagne (i.e. old gods start date) the only rulers available around that area were Emirs (dukes), and a whole duchy is a very tempting target for either the Abbasids or the Byzantines.

I was able to squeeze in a county with a custom messalian ruler at the Charlemagne start date and stay under the radar long enough for me to get my hands on the holy site of Antioch.

If I was to try to be completely accurate historically I could try to establish a county/duchy with a custom ruler closer to Baghdad or the other holy site in Iran but that would be pretty impossible given then current game mechanics. The Abbasids might over look you taking Antioch but they will not overlook you taking Baghdad.

Actually I'd imagine he either did ruler designer or educated a child with the Patriarch in the East, then used his court chaplain.

Ruler designer of a standard Messalian Levantine count. Nothing fancy just a scholar theologian Messalian count with no special attributes.

I thought about that but two things.

A: to do that I would have to invest some much needed cash into upgrading the ports; and
B: the Byzantine Emperor is eyeing that island as well as it is one county for him to add another duchy to his pocket. And not long after my OP he did just that, I did not want to be in the ONLY county standing between the Byzantine Emperor and another duchy for him to have.

Good luck @Little Rocket Ship . My best advice would be to find yourself a county somewhere in the Charlamagne start date within the Duchy of Antioch (held by a Muslim at the Charlamagne start date), and creep up under the radar to get your hands on Antioch. Keep in mind the Duchy of Cilica will always be wanted by the Byzantines so you more than likely will lose that.

Do NOT be afraid to kiss alot of ass with your Grand Viz with switching between the Abbasid Caliph court and the Byzantine Emperor courts.

Alternatively you could start with a county somewhere closer to the Iranian holy site (see below pic).
53EA148DC81D4CEDD1EF2C1ABB76F41526BC4B5C

Holding a holy site as a messalian is crucial, YOU NEED the boost in religious authority or you will find your subjects, county and maybe even yourself not able to stand against the big religions. Do note if I am not mistaken the Iranian holy site is also the holy site for the Zoros. May the best incest win.

If you dont want to worry about being crushed by the abbasids or byzantines you can always start as a nomad and use your hordes of cavalry to carve out a nice section of the middle east before settling down and using the patriarch to convert to nestorian.

Holy Wars tend to get MA up to 30%, so there was some conversions already (surprisingly, the other dynasty branch that holds Alodia was able to convert all 4 provinces they hold...). King of Medina is my buffer from the Abbasids, but now it will be slower, as I need to "unite" Nubia through marriage and fabricating claims... I just hope that by the time I'm done, I will have enough levies to tackle the Muslim kingdom holding my holy site, which has roughly 20k of troops...

As a quick update on the OP:

The Abbasids fell as mentioned to one too many decadence revolts. This led to a much weakened situation for the Muslims and a few more Emirs around my borders to think they would be better off independent rather than under the umbrella of the Sunni Caliphate after it changed due to the decadence revolt. This of course led me to being able to gobble up two more Islamic duchies to the east of Antioch.

Additionally the constant invasions on the very lonely Armenian kingdom left it's once mighty army pretty weak. Weak enough for me to actually start nibbling away at their kingdom as well.

As of now the pic below shows the expansion of my Messalian Kingdom so far.

The only problems now is that the Abbasids reclaimed the Sunni Caliphate after a monster host/adventure by someone that terrifies the hell out of me. Me being right on the border to the capital (Damascus) of the now stronger than ever Sunni Caliphate leaves me VERY nervous. Considering the current Caliph and the one that brought back the caliphate to the Abbasids is THIS guy:

I guess the only weird thing to mention about this playthough is that the Byzantines by some freak accident (marriage from somewhere in middle Europe), are now fully Catholic. This has made them more docile than normal but I am sure any time their gaze turns towards me it could very well spell out my doom.

On a side note for some reason that is beyond me the Gods of video gaming were not amused with me taking Incestual Kingdoms to the next level and rewarded me with an army that.......well.....they wear PINK.

So far I am not sure if the lack of a full on invasion by either the Abbasids or the Byzantines is due to sheer luck or if it is due to the fact that they both have not stopped laughing yet at the color of my military uniforms.....either way.....that's the update.

-Cheers.
