At the time,

Present tense. Judging Vicky 2 on criteria you used to judge Dungeon! and Dizzy by is not a good thing

Others don't have that and can't, seemingly, understand it.

Raising your expectations is always a challenge :)

Heh, "entitlement"? We paid them, not the other way around

I give it 6/10. It lacks immersion and feels dumbed down

e:
Not sure how the Paradox employees handle it.

Most professionals appreciate constructive criticism.

9/10 from me, though it's above 9 IMO, something like 92/100.

Best Paradox game ever, in fact the only one I play seriously (not just for demo or review purposes) and the only one I registered on the forum.

Plus, I am AMAZED at the level of tolerance and goodwill Paradox guys show here. If this was my or my company's forum, many of the unnecessarily and unreasonably whiney posts and accounts would be deleted in a matter of seconds.

Why not? A good game is a good game, surely, expecting games to get better and better is like expecting food to keep getting better and better, or expecting a picturesque view to keep getting better and better. The games change, but the criteria don't.

Raising your expectations is always a challenge :)
It's something spoiled brats seem keen on, I suppose.

Heh, "entitlement"? We paid them, not the other way around
OK, well you got $45 worth of entitlement, tops. I'd say, unless your game is working a good deal worse than mine, you're getting a more than you are genuinely entitled to.

I give it 6/10. It lacks immersion and feels dumbed down
I give it 8/10; I got plenty of immersion and SOD and it lacks pointless micromanagement.

Could it be improved? Well, duh. Every game I have ever played could be improved. Specifically, the balance needs tweaking and the military system could be greatly improved, regional markets (size driven by technology) and a more detailed cost model would be great. But with all that it's a great, fun game already.

All in all a solid B+ with the chance to rise to an A*. There are a few minor issues but nothings broken or badly designed. Once the game's been patched and had the wrinkles ironed out I can see Viki 2 topping my favourite strategy games of all time.

On a seperate note, the Dev's deserve praise for making a game that actually works out of the box on release. I've put in loads of hours since I bought the game and not had any crashes or glitches, I can't remember the last PC game I bought that managed that.

Although, in both my games i've played so far Britain starts to fall apart after just a few years... i think they move all of their armies to oversea wars and forget to defend their mainland.
v2game2010-08-1318-46-26-54.jpg

This silliness still exists? I remember complaining about this in EU3. It's impossible to take the game seriously when the British navies and armies sit back and relax on the continent while the isle is overrun by tiny bands of rebels.

It's fantastic fun, though I'm dreading when my Austria game hits the "if it's Friday I must be a rebel" stage. OTOH, I have been behaving better in anticipation of that unhappy day. Hmm, hope they don't slap a "WAD" on later-game rebels.

I missed the feeling I had playing EU, where every country seemed different. When they took out historical determinism, you had to move 2000 miles to get a country that really played differently, IMHO. I Vicky 2 I think Netherlands and Belgium would play differently. There are literally a few dozen countries I'm looking forward to trying. And you know that 1.2 will tidy up the problems we have now, rebels, economics.

I'll admit the game is imperfect at the moment, I might not be able to do that when it's done.

Or someone old enough to remember when computer games offered the two choices of text only or using ASCII characters as graphical representations, there was no such thing as tech support, and you had to fight for a terminal in the university data center.

The funny thing is that products tend to get better and better. People change their expectations accordingly. I find it naive - and conservative to the extreme to use the state of products many years of development ago(plus, especially computer-related goods seem to develop at an amazing speed) to justify the state of products today.

If I would go to a shop, and the shop would sell a big cubic television that is only capable of producing grainy black/white images, I would certainly rate it worse(like 0/10) than the flatscreen HD thingy next to it that produces clear, splendid images.

And no, the fact I had to watch movies on a cubic grainy television when I was a kid does not make me rate another crappy television that is sold today higher.

Please note that I do think Victoria 2 is a nice game. I think it's better than Vicky 1(in regards to the pop promotion, that is), so that's a start.

Just read your basic headline: "10/10," so not responding to the details (having too much fun playing! :D )

I agree this one is very very good. More than any game I've ever played, it really forces you to play inline with a real historical leader.

Erm, what? The game is extremely hawkish. You have AIs declaring war most of the time as soon as they have spare infamy or a casus belli. UK in particular annexes Tibet, Burma, China, etc very quickly.

And i even saw a event for France where Louis Bonaparte whines at you from the Swiss Alps for taking the throne.

+1 This is very basic logic and should be easy enough for people to understand. I cannot even fathom how someone can say a game is 10/10 because the all around production value of a current game far exceeds what we had over 20 years ago.

Personally, I think Vic II would be awesome if it was not hampered by extremely poor game performance. The game lags so much that I find it difficult to endure. Did any paid or volunteer beta, developer or anyone else ever play the game past 1880 and raise their hands and say my game lags to high hell and is only utilizing 80% of my CPU max at any given time? I don't understand the thought process that makes anyone think that this is acceptable.

I don't expect you to repeat it. However, calling me a "new kid" just because I seem to have a different opinion than you on this makes no sense. Our opinions differ, but it has nothing to do with you being an old man and me being a handsome 18 year old kid(to use your choice of words).

Apparently, you just cherish nostalgia more than reason.

Fortunately for all of us this kind of conservatism has never prevailed in the world of game development. If that would be true we would all still be playing space-invader rip-off's. After all, if we had it your way, we would not have the right to ask for anything better.

I see. So your argumentation is that considering the state of games many years ago we can't realistically expect them to be much better today?

I don't see why you get so upset about this though. I did not have the impression I was insulting you, neither does it feel like I am on a high horse. If indeed I am not behaving, please send me a PM to tell me what I said wrong. I respect you, but that does not mean I will refrain from participating in this discussion.

I'm delighted by Victoria 2, but I just think it's stupid to rate it higher because games in the past did not have the quality we expect of games today. Of course many people are greatly exaggerating the problems, yet even then it should not be dumbed down by a simple "games were way worse in my time".

I find it disturbing you can't see the nostalgia and conservatism in those words.

This game is great! I played all EU series, rome, crusader kings, hoI 1 and 2 (I have the 3 but I don´t like it) and Vicky 1. Victoria 2 is amazingly great! The most I love is you can play any country with any faction with many game styles and all of them are fun and playable.

GREAT GAME!!!

Erm, what? The game is extremely hawkish. You have AIs declaring war most of the time as soon as they have spare infamy or a casus belli.

This is the era of the Ems Telegram and gunboat diplomacy. This behavior seems appropriate. ;)

In my current Austria game I've been having brutal, BRUTAL back-and-forth wars with France over the one province of Alsace-Lorraine that isn't owned by the SGF. It's changed hands three times now and it is fantastic.

This game is fantastic. Yes, it needs some tweaking, but this is NOT 'broken'. I am really happy that I bought this.

I would like it if you could have a bit of peace - for someone who has been wargaimg for 40 years, I'm actually happiest building a successful, peaceful, prosperous country. Oh God - 40 years!
