Int has much shorter range, good for home defense against allied bombing , does not travel well in the east [ short range ]. Fighters do well on bombers and other fighters and have longer range so they do better in the east . When things are planned out well having both is not a bad idea but in emergencies often Int are sent to a province and then cannot work because of short range. It is my opinion that only fighters should be built.

Big Tex hit it on the head. In Europe there are tons of airbases close together, meaning that interceptors short range doesn't matter. But in Asia, there are few airbases and are spread far apart. There are few airbases across the pacific as well, in these two areas the extra range of fighters helps maintain air coverage.

So it depends on how far your gonna play your games. As germany and the soviets I would normally build interceptors, unless I planned on a world domination game were I would be fighting in the pacific and asia alot, then I would build fighters.

Depends what you want to use them for.
Interceptors are generally used to intercept bombers and fight them off.
Whilst fighters are used to keep control of the skies and fight other fighters.

No matter which nation I play, as long as I have good enough tech teams, I build interceptors for defense and fighters for offense.
Int get excellent bonus when fighting bombers, so even if enemy bombers come with escort fighter attached, you should't take much damage (unless greatly outnumbered) and you should also cause alot org and strenght damage.
Best reason to use fighters is as mentioned earlier, greater range. One good thing is that in cases of emergency you can use fighters for interdiction or ground attack, but very limitedly.

In a natural course, Germany enters the war earlier, so interceptor plays a main role in earlier years. When the war goes overseas, fighters generally take over. In the end, I usually have 3:1 ratio of fighters to interceptors.

As Soviet, I have more time to build a primarily fighter force.

One more thing, when upgrading interceptors, make sure research turbojet int earlier than rocket int. In this way, upgrading to rocket ints is very fast (only a few days).

I often build both for european countries - I find it wasteful to get rid of the starting interceptors anyway, so I keep them for defending home territory where short range doesn't matter. Double the research is a pain, however, so ditch them on not so high-tech countries in favour of fighters, which are better all around. Eg, as UK (it's 41 now, and game has gone mostly historically so far with the exception that I've already kicked Italy out of Africa) I have 2x4 interceptors and 4x4 fighters.

Longer range is essential.

As stated before, it's all in how you're going to use it.

For me, since I focused mainly on my Land army, I really had no purpose for an effective Bomber force as I wouldn't have to soften my targets up as my Armies could pound straight through, so, the only use of an airforce for a situation like mine, would be Interceptors, as it would merely protect Bombers enprotching on your terriotory and bombing your ships/forts/ICs, etc away.

Fights are absolutely essentially basically everywhere besides Europe and North America - especially South America, Africa and Asia. The most important area where fighter cover will be necessary is probably in the Mediterranean, especially in multiplayer or against DAIM. Why?

Because the allies will have strongholds in north africa, but will need to invade Greece/Yugoslavia/Italy - interceptors wont make it across the ocean while fighters will. Escort fighters are not enough to hold off enemy air superiority, nor run large patrols to protect your fleets (because if your on time... your light carriers, if any, wont be advanced enough to fend off naval strikes). While the vanilla AI is pretty poor at using air superiority and using naval/tactical bombers to halt attacks, a properly functioning air force, through multiplayer or through an AI mod, will make it impossible to invade mainland italy without fighters.

Inteceptors are very powerful against fighters too. However, as germany you will probably need a bunch of fighters on the east front to handle the distances, and interceptors to gaurd the Ruhr and France against Strat bombers.

As USSR, i like to go inteceptor. You are only stopping bombers from hitting you and never really going deep over the front lines. Also, you can build a string of Airbases to make sure that your units can stay close to the front lines. This alows you to decimate the German CAS and TAC.
