This is the first time I've gotten to the 20th century and air units were recently made available. Before I build a few of them there were a few things about their implementation that had me confused. I tried searching but couldn't find anything helpful.

So building air units works just like building an infantry division with an artillery brigade?

Do opposing airplanes fight each other does air combat work a lot like land combat?

How effective are the air squadrons?

IIRC the air units were added more or less solely for the Victoria -> Hearts of Iron 2 conversion. VIP has not touched any military units in a significant way to date, and has not yet made it into the 20th century in the main event series either.

Air units add to the division's statistics. You get exactly what you see, there are no hidden modifiers and there is no special air to air combat mode.

Indeed, if you do not plan any conversion, planes are somewhat useless. Except for the fun and coolness of it.
