The last techs in the mod have historical dates around 2020, so running out of tech is not a major issue. I suppose we will keep playing until either one player, or a victorious coalition that agrees to end the game rather than fight it out for final supremacy, is left standing. I observe that a fully nuclear battlefield in HoI2, which is pretty close to the AoD engine, is just nasty and not really all that much fun; you can't really get a good offensive going when your enemy will just nuke your spearhead. Have a look at the end of the Great Game, for example - which by complete coincidence is now available as PDFs - to see a complete Great-War-style stalemate in France, with radioactive provinces of infrastructure 0 taking the place of barbed wire. So when we get several nuclear powers with multiple warheads - not just one or two bombs each, but real arsenals - I for one would be happy to call it a day.

The Empire of the Volga XIV

Colonel Esayeva was having a bad campaign.

She had been shot out of or forced to abandon more than five different barrels over the course of the three months of heavy fierce fighting in the hectic battles on the plains of Lvov.

Sometimes it was another barrel, and when it wasn't a barrel it was a fighter bomber. And when it wasn't a fighter bomber it was a hidden anti barrel gun and when it wasn't an anti barrel gun it was a some fucking asshole fritz with a lit kerosene vodka bottle killing the engine for good.

Fuck this awful war it isn't fun at all, war is no fun when the enemy shoots back and kicks you in the crotch just as hard as when you kicked them in the teeth.

At least her adorable little crew survived each encounter.

Right now she sitting astride the commanders copula in her commander barrel as it merrily 'drove' along the frozen packed snow of what Russia considered a masterpiece of highway engineering.

Until it rained and turned into a syrupy mud over a meter deep or when it snowed and froze your vehicles solidly into the ice. But otherwise during the rest of the ye-two months remaining of the Russian year it was perfectly serviceable.

Emilia Esayeva would spit if it weren't for the fact her winter uniform included a scarf that wrapped around her head and covered her mouth, preventing such gestures of displeasure with the universe.

Kicking her driver would have to do.

“Speed up!” She rasped into the microphone that was FINALLY standard issue for all barrelers.

She wondered what words other countries used, she heard Japan liked to use something that sounded like “Sensha-do” or something like that.

“If I go any faster Brother Colonel we'll certainly meet out quota for crashing into allied vehicles.” “Stas” dead panned.

“Bah.” nichevo She thought to herself.

Guess you abuse your inferiors for long enough they get used to it.

And that made her sad.

Emilia took out her pocket map and began taking measurements, probably another ten hours of hard fuel consuming driving before they would reach the front with their new vehicles.

She may not have been educated in the Suvorov Academy of the Military Sciences but a few years of barrel warfare will hammer into your head the fundamentals. Plus remedial field courses with recent graduates didn't hurt, much.

The proper war to fight a war was to drive straight and hard at the enemy's weakest point and then with that breakthrough keep driving until you get to the soft meaty bits in the rear echelons. Communications and command points to disrupt things everywhere along the front to paralyze their ability to intelligently respond.

Once that happened the obvious goal was to encircle the enemy and destroy and capture a large enemy fighting force to blow a huge hole in the front that they will find it increasingly difficult to fill up, with gradually weaker reinforcements until they throw in the towel.

That was theory, in real life though they were fighting something else entirely. It wasn't about breakthroughs here, but about simply throwing enough bodies and barrels at the same point until finally they pulled back a few yards and then you restarted the same exhausting process all over again.

Both sides simply seemed to have too many reserves to throw at the enemy, and the enemy always seemed too well able to swap fresh forces around to take the next hammer blow before things got hot.

“Fucking bullshit.” She said aloud.

“Yes Brother Colonel.” Replied Stas's monotone over the transceiver.

Well the quiet emotionless type can be cute too in their own damaged way.

[Girls Und Panzer reference. I came up with the idea first I say!]

In a retroperpective observation, you guys should have gone completely Non-nuclear when making the mod if you had serious intentions to extend the game into ridiculously long in game years.

December 1943 - April 1944

Situation in late April 1944:

FSR_1944_Apr_industry.png

Obviously, the most important development is that some complete idiot gave an industrial province to Norway, and now the Ynglings are unleashed and will slaughter us all. Apart from that, there is an American invasion of Africa from its base in Reunion. The invasion began in February - nearing the end of summer in Mozambique, with good dry weather:

African_Invasion_I.png

By mid-March the armoured columns were all over southern Africa:

African_Invasion_II.png

Possibly a bit too ambitiously, as April seems to have seen a counterattack cutting off the columns:

African_Invasion_III.png

But there are good ports in the Ethiopian domains, built as that empire is on half a millennium of controlling the seaborne trade of the Indian Ocean; I don't think being cut in two parts caused the invasion any great difficulty of supply.

For those who can't be bothered to zoom in on the world map, the industrial strengths are (taken from in-session screenshots, so they are correct):
Germany: 706/472
Catalunya: 652/429
California: 384/263
Kongo: 382/283
Ethiopia: 333/214
Japan: 261/192
Roman Khanate: 204/145
Punjab: 166/123
Russia: 73/46
Norway: 7/5

The Tibetan and Burmese campaigns heated up considerably this session, going back and forth in attack and counter. Here is the situation in December, with my planned attacks marked:

Planned_Attacks_1944.png

If successful, these attacks would create two giant pockets, one centered on Frunze and the other encompassing all of Burma, allowing me to destroy most of the Punjabi army. However, bad terrain and weather, stubborn Punjabi counterattacks, Japanese 'volunteers', and Ethiopian air support amounting to about half again the combined air forces of the Khanate and Punjab together, led to each of these attacks being blunted and turned back. Notice the casualty counts, however; the totals are slightly less than 10000 Khanate losses, somewhat over 28000 for the Punjabi.

Thus in February we had this situation, showing the counterattacks:

Situation_Feb_1944.png

Notice the plight of my three cut-off divisions up in the north; out of supply, out of fuel, and out of hope. I have taken Kashgar, but I won't be able to make it stick; I've also taken Shigatse, but it is being strongly attacked by Punjabi forces surrounding this breach. However, if I can hold off those counterattacks I've got it made: The Punjabi forces are all on my flanks, in front of me there is sweet, sweet nothing all the way to the sea.

Both sides were making fairly liberal use of VoV orders at this point; here is me hanging on to Gertse (just north of Shigatse) by the skin of my teeth:

Gertse_defense.png

The casualty ratio here is not so favourable; but the XIV Adrianople accomplished its mission and held until relieved.

At around this point MightyG, playing Japan, gives up completely on the polite fiction of neutrality; not only do the 'volunteers' in Burma become quite numerous and start launching powerful attacks into the jungle, he also breaks the ceasefire in Korea. The Korean attacks go nowhere, because I'm not that stupid; the line of division is still strongly held. In Burma, however, one motorised column gets as far as Pu'er before being turned back:

Puer_attack.png

Well, Burma is one thing, but Korea is another. At this point I no longer consider Japan to be observing even the thinnest fig leaf of a ceasefire, and will hold myself free to attack its forces wherever I find them.

Gertse and Shigatse did in fact hold, and I was able to launch an attack down south into Bengal, trapping the reaction forces that Mark (playing Punjab) had scraped together, and at one point reaching Calcutta:

Calcutta_attack.png

Cue the cries of "Thalassa! Thalassa!" However, this was being done by a single motorised division; the infantry were still slogging through mountains with infrastructure around 20.

Notice the really immensely lopsided casualty ratio in the lower right-hand corner; that's from my very long-running counterattack on Baoshan, defended by something like 3 regular Punjabi divisions, 9 militia, and 6 Japanese motorised and light-armour divisions. As everything was on VoV, naturally the militia got hammered into uselessness long before the armour gave up, and then just sat about taking casualties for a month or so.

Unfortunately, I still could not push infantry through the mountains fast enough - partly due to the aforementioned infrastructure, partly because of continued desperate attacks on the flanks - to reinforce my motorised spearhead; so the Japanese were able to either land additional forces, or pull some out of the line in Burma, and push my attack back to Shigatse - in the process wiping out II Motor Rifle, whose commander insisted on withdrawing into the teeth of a Japanese attack rather than the way I told him to go. Twice. Worse, the Gantok pocket was rescused by my loss of Kathmandu.
Hence the situation in late April:

Situation_1944_April.png

My incursion in the north didn't actually start out as a rescue attempt - I had in fact written off those three divisions some time before the trap closed. But I kept making these small counterattacks where I saw a chance, and pushing the Punjabi back; and since I had these armoured divisions sitting about just looking at the strongly-held front north of Lake Balkhash, I thought I might as well attack weakness rather than strength. And, lo and behold, once I was past the thin infantry screen there was basically nothing in my way. Even with African help the Punjabi can't be strong everywhere.

its still 400 IC+300 IC compared to 650IC+600 IC... that we could be absolutely stomp romping them all untill 1944 is avchiment of its own ;)
But Ive been saying all the time, we had our envelope for momentum and we had to use it...When nearly two 700 IC nations are perma-allied, YOU have to do all you can to defeat them, and that unfortuanetly means to figth as underdog and when you figth as underdog, at somepoint you are forced into defence.

Thanks, buddy.

Some points about the invasion:
Cutting off spearheads only works if they do so inland; if my troops are adjacent to an ocean, they can be supplied.

Our side has pretty complete naval superiority. Doesn't mean my transports don't occasionally get caught (curse you, Punjab! That cost me 3 modern marine divisions!), but convoys are no problem.

Other than that, little to add. Curious to see how this will work out.

Yes and also figth like it is supposed when exploiding such breaktroughs would also help to the advantage of the assaulter, But I seddle for the confort that Oddman is just teasing me by pretending he has no clue whatsoever what he is doing down here and all that apparent tacticall failures after each other is just part of some grand scheme that Im yet aware of ;)
Indeed it will be intresting to see how it goes in the africa, but wheter it affects on the grand scale, I dont know. Mathemathics works so badly against us at this point, so Catalunia-germany has all the luxury for mistakes and screw-upps they like, where as we have none.

I am not at all surprised how far Africa has fallen - Africa had a surge in late EU3 and early V2 due to how high grain prices shot in EU3, but we didn't take the coal we needed to maintain that momentum, nor did we break Catalunia, nor did we break Germany, nor did we break the alliance between Catalunia and Germany.

In fact, I rather helped them by saving Dano. Would have weakened the Americas if I'd let Oddman conquer Dano, rather than saving him, only for Dano to turn into a loyal little ally. I never expected Dano to go so long without breaking a deal. Even being trustworthy, Dano proves himself devious and destructive!

But really EU3 went very well for us. It was my choices in V2 that really killed the African momentum. I ignored Germany's grab for the British isles and over-invested in Kongo's industries. I made the mistake of under-funding my military with an eye to having a good position on conversion and left myself wide open to the Korean wars. Key to both of those mistakes, as well as a whole host of minor ones, was that I did not understand just how important coal was.

So it is kinda like the Germans and Japanese in WW2 - we did very, very well. But not well enough to really shift the strategic situation in our favour come HoI, so the surge of success has faded.

What DOES surprise me is that the Asian powers are so weak. Clearly Africa at least managed to break the power of the East (though I can't claim much of the credit for that - the main blow to Asian power was the partition of China - and that was masterminded by Irsh).

What are the demands of the various sides in this war?

And have you modded how non-core territory works? I am wondering how efficient Punjab is at using its Indian IC and manpower. I am surprised that India at least hasn't been released as a Punjabi puppet.

This would probably have significantly helped the Punjabi position if done in, say, 1941. It is now likely too late to be helpful. Win or lose, the Asian war will be decided with the units currently fighting. There isn't time for a 30-IC minor to gear up enough production lines to matter.

Yea Fasquardon sums it up quite nicely what African situation is. Then again I feel, the reason why we are at this point is that I didn't do my maxium when I took over. We should have never peaced out the first war, it was when the African tide was highest point.

Then again, occupation, land takeover by force and manouvre operations over empty desert are three different things that looks same on the map, but have whole lotta difference when it comes to the strategical situation.
Also ability land opposed beaches and bring forces shore has been demostrated, fair so. Skill to actually exploit such for defeating the enemy yet waits for its own turn

It doesen't help for this remark, how Dano actually has been part of our intial war plans everytime during this game when we have tried to attack germany-america, and always bailed out at the last minute.

But as for them, it doesen't matter. Dano knows and oddman knows, that since oddman-fivoin has always gone for the convidient gangbangs with leaving the enemy no odds, California is safe, and african crusade has only made it more safer since Oddman dears not to do anything when he cannot secure his backs from africa. And it would have worked had you and Irsh remained as african players, and AFAIK there actually were quite detailed plan to annex California with african approval prior my time. But no trust can exist between me and Oddman-fivoin, so such understanding could not born now, and despite African commitment and dedication to help California is as low as Californian commitment to help Africa, The personalities involving have created this cruel mockery of African gurantee over California that prevents Oddman for finshing Dano.

And its sad that its the deception, weaseling, cowardness, convidient gangbanging and perma-mega-alliances that will win this game...when ever did I lost beeing so good at them ;)
