I have noticed in my game there are tons of female rulers (countesses and ducesses). They are always unmarried, and never wan't to marry either.
Mostly I can't even offer them a marriage, but when I can they always decline.

Is this working as intended? Do I have to have a certain level of prestige or high enough title?

It is a known issue about female rulers, but there are ways to get around it.

First among these is the byzantine cheat that makes all diplomatic missions successful. Use it with discretion and don't forget to turn it off or the game becomes very unfufilling!

Simply press the f12 key and type byzantine when the command console pops up and press enter. Some text in the box will describe that diplomatic missions will always be successful and you are set. Make your offer to the lucky lady and she will accept. Then, with the command screen still up, type byzantine again to set things right again in the game. Press f12 once more or escape key to get rid of the command window.

Prestige and title have little to do with it and I think it is possible to attract countesses and duchesses, but you can not under any circumstances marry ruler to ruler (your character to a duchess or countess) without using the cheat. Very strange altogether and I doubt it is working as intended.

Ok. But is this a problem only for the player? Has anyone observed the AI being able to marry female rulers?

1. AI female rulers never marry out of their own

2. AI male rulers, never tries to arrange a marriage, for someone in his court, with female rulers

As a human player you can arrange a marriage between someone in your court and between a female ruler. Even without cheating

The game doesn't allow ruler to marry with each other, since when a females marries someone she moves to the court of her hushand. If she is ruler herself this isn't possible, so the game will then crash.

Once you are married though, you can give your wife as many titles as you want.

so ive started a game of CK and the 1st thing i want to do is get my duke married up. i go to the ledger to see the available list of brides and find a nice dutchess but the option to marry is unavailable as the above posts explain.

just wondering why these unavailable brides are on the potential bride list?

For the silly reason that they are unmarried, and you can marry your ruler's heir, as Veld explained.

Is there an easier way to find out the rank of the available brides? By rank, I mean, courtier vs. countess vs. duchess. My heir just came of age. I'm playing the Duke of Apulia in DV. Up until now, I've arranged marriages for my bastard and my nephew based on the bride having a particular trait score that I needed in my court. Now, I'd like to get my heir married to someone who will be able to enlarge my demesne. How can I best find out who is eligible? Should I try to find someone who is a duchess? Or are those going to be too rare? Am I even going about this the right way?

Marrying your male dynasty members to female rulers will almost never work. You will have to be very prestigious (or cheat) to make that happen :) ... so using that as a strategy, is probably not going to work. You can't sort the brides list on rank or their seniority. So it will mean lots of clicking finding oldest daughters and the like.

Marrying female rulers is hard and there aren't that many around. You best option is to first check which realms all have a semisalic law (either primogeneture or consanguinity). You can do this by clicking on the law and then all counties who have that law will turn green.

Then check the rulers of those countries to see if they have daughters and no sons (or maybe just 1 son) at about the right age. Then try to marry your heir to that daughter.

This info won't be found in the ledger, you will have to manually check the realms.
