I was wondering if the game would allow female rulers. Altough it is suppose to be historical in content, I believe that, as a player, one should have the option of naming a woman as an heiress to the throne. For example, I play as Britain. Since most of my sons are in battle, I decide to appoint my daughter (let's say her name is Matilda) as heiress to the throne. After the king dies, Matilda becomes queen. So, she gains a diplomatic bonus points with other nations who have female rulers, but she loses a couple of points with the some of the nobles and clergymen because none of her brothers were chosen as the next King. I think this idea sounds great! How about you?

I would say: why not?
Hungary had a female ruler in this era, too. (Mária: 1382-1395)
But what about Lex Salica in France?

Well there can be Female Rulers, but don't think his brothers, the nobility and the clergy will be happy with Succesion Alteration, so if you have no male child and there is no law avoiding women to access the throne you can have a Ruling Queen.

Well, in this case, if there are no heirs (all the brothers have died in war or there were only daughters born), then she would be able to inherit the throne. According to Lex Salica, if there are no male heirs (brothers) then the estates are inherited to the firstborn daughter.
Another idea would be that the monarch has the option to remove the law. But, if he does, then he loses much favour with the Church and the nobles for some time.

My knowledge in Salic Law and its application during History tell me that except you modify it in some strange moment(Mª Theresa of Austria) the crown will pass to the most near male by male descendence of the family.

With monarchs it would go to women when there is no men but with noble medieval families I do not think so- a rival noble would see this as a prime chance to attack. It would likely be inherited by the next nearest male as said.

In most cases, the only reason why it would pass to the closest male heir could be divided into two categories: one being that the male heir is much older and mature than the young female heiress, or the nobles and clergy appointed the male heir as Regent and later proclaimed himself as ruler.

Well, perhaps Matilda will win over Stephen in the power struggle this time. :)

If the only legal child of the King is a woman, and laws allow her to access the throne she would do, but that will prove you if your nobles are trustable or you shall behead them and give their titles to most trustable guys :D

Okay. So, you have a point. Nevertheless, I think a player should pick a female ruler. FYI: The Russian Monarchy, at one point, had an Emperor who was part black.

Care to name this black Emperor?

I thought the Salic Law was only dug up from obscurity by scholars in 1328, upon the death of Charles IV of France, to prevent the ascension of Isabella of England to the French throne? Given the range of this game, it would seem credible to disable it until then.
