So, I see that there is a new federation map mode in AoW but I have no clue what the heck a federation is. I tried looking through the dev diaries but to no avail. Any help?

Federations are loosely defensive alliances available only to the native nations that use the native mechanics. Federations are used to combat expansionists, somewhat similarly to coalitions, and if a sufficiently sizable federation is formed, it can combat Europeans when they arrive; should a member be attacked, all members within the federation will join on the side of the member.

Federation leaders are chosen by whomever holds the most federal authority, a combination of both prestige and diplomatic reputation. The Federation leader will only remain the federation leader until the ruler dies, and then if another nation has more federal authority then that nation will become the new Federation leader. The Federation leader also receives a 10% morale boost to the army and navy and +1 diplomatic reputation as long as they remain the federation leader.

Wait they are back now? Great. Native American tribes can form federations, essentially a defensive alliance where all members protect eachother. Meaning they can form a front against aggressive European colonisers.

They was never away. Before AoW i have form with Mohikane a federation with Cherokee, Iroqouis and Lenape. Plus some alliances with other natives. With alll this natives i have stop the Portugal/ England alliance. I believe the one thing is, that you leave the federation when changing government. But for this point you can make a alliance with federationmember. And don't forget the boost for the federation leader!
