Greetings, infidels.

I just recently wondered about federation fleets - the new upcoming update will allow you to specialise in federations, which is looking like an interesting feature for a United Federation of Planets session or two.

But one thing I never wondered about is this: federation fleets share all of the technology of the participating members, but how do they handle repeating tech? Is it worth it to build a fleet mostly out of weapons of the best technologically advanced member to take advantage of their repeating shield/weapon tech, or would it be better to just build under the assumption that such tech doesn't apply?

The answer to this could decide which build is more effective, as a general design would favour tachyon lances and artillery (two different weapon types) because they work well together, whereas a design that takes advantage of my huge number of repeating techs in energy weapons might favour tachyon lances and a mix of plasma and disruptors.

Does anyone know if such tech applies and if yes, whose tech (I'd guess my own, but it may be that the highest repeating tech of all members applies, similar to the modules themselves?).

This would also make for some interesting research decisions. (You could have each fed member concentrate on just one repeating tech such as armor, hull hp/shield regen, energy weapon damage, etc. tt., because all of those techs then get applied to the federation fleet and make it the most advanced power in the galaxy :p)

Edith: I tried to google this, but the only stuff I could find was general stuff about federation fleets and nothing about how empire modifiers or repeating techs applied to them when in your or someone elses control.

I myself am curious about this. It has implications for an MP a friend of mine and I are going to be in w/ some of my other friends. We have an arrangement going in to form a Federation with each other, and if we can split our research down separate avenues lategame and reap the benefits in our federation fleet, well, the advantages are obvious.

I haven't tested it, but it should work. From my experience, any research that you do applies to both you and the federation fleet. Could someone test this to make sure? I would, but my brother insists on not playing with me until Utopia comes out.
