Does anyone know exactly what a federation association status does? I'm not exactly sure what benefits it gives to either the fed or the empire with the association.
It functions as a NAP with all Federation member empires, while also allowing for trust to build up to 100 with all Federation members.
Association can be very useful, and very annoying. The 100 trust will keep the federation friendly unless your are out purging the galaxy, however, keep an eye on who the other associates are, as the 100 trust is how empires gain the good relations to join said Federation. So .... if you are planning to declare war on an empire that is an associate, your plans could get delayed by 10 years if they suddenly join the federation and force you to abandon your association in order to pursue your war agenda. I'm finding in 2.2 that association is a nice way to counteract the distance penalty with very distant mega corp federation members that I want commercial pacts with so they will build on my planets. While the commercial buildings are okay for me as the host planet (certainly better than nothing), I've started aiming to cozy up to a mega corp early so my main worlds will be "claimed", thus preventing criminal syndicates from building on them.
Well obviously, while it would be nice to model pitting opposing federations against each other to gain benefit for yourself, like some countries did in the cold war, allowing that would be a bit gamey. It's similar to how in real life, casus bellis aren't necessary, but in game they're required. But you can't be an associate of more than one federation at a time. So you should choose carefully. Makes it a bit annoying when you have opposing federations and you can only cozy up to one of them (the other will eventually hate you).
