As everyone know, EU4 is a game where you use Monarch Points for everything. So, a militarily focused Monarch would be able to invest more in Military ideas, tech and army than one specialized in something different.
And now here is a problem: a Monarch lasts a lifetime, the nation lasts the game. And nations tend to be focused on military, diplomacy or economy as well. And there is a flaw in the current system: a nation that is supposed to be focused on military will very often get Monarchs that have that stat low but others high. Thus you can't play a military nation at all.

My suggestion is that underage heirs get a chance to be re-educated: you choose one of the skills and after some time, that skills increases by 1 and another one randomly decreases by 1. This way the limitations are still there without having to fear your nation won't be able to focus on what it should be but without the Monarch turning perfect (as he sacrifices another one of his skills).

I have another train of thought about this: The focus of your nation should be whatever your leader is good at at that point. So if you were colonizing, and your new leader is good at war, don't waste your time trying to colonize slowly, and instead bring fire, sword and christendom to the Aztecs!

Yep. Just be flexible. As new challenges raise - you need to learn how to handle them.
Don't stay in place like a donkey hoping that master of fate will stop pulling. It's pointless.

Very good idea, I support this
Sometimes you just don't need certain points ( depending who are you playing with ) and spending them to 'upgrade' your heir is really great idea.
But I don't think that's possible in the game. Because when ruler is changed or heir is born, they stay like that in savegame. I think nothing can affect heir stats..

Or use this time to invest in some military ideas and techs that you may have fallen behind on during your large focus on diplo-stuff!

Oh, and with Henry, just... well, Quill18 did pretty well, actually.

Make your ruler a general, and when England attacks, just stick him in front, preferrably with a big target painted on his uniform!

Immediately!

As to OP's proposal I agree with some minor comments: I really like how it is right now, the thrill of not knowing if you will have a Frederick II or a Wilhelm II makes the planning and all the diplomatic strategy twice as important. And while I would appreciate to have a CKII-esque system complete with 17th century style portraits and a few education events, maybe even impact from your advisers upon your heir, and would delightfully and happily pay for it I wouldn't mind not having that as it isn't apparently a crucial system in the EU series.

That might not be a bad idea! it would be nice to gain some Military Power from battles, and maybe some Diplo/Adm power from other in-game things too. Although since we do get Military Tradition from those that might be out of the picture

Right now you can change your heir into a general. I think that should increase their military power a bit, if he survives it.
Similarly, why not allow your heir to change into a diplomat or into something administrative...y...uh... dunno.

Hi,

That's a sensible idea, although you'll probably end up with all monarchs having the same stats. For diplomacy, well, every alliance/royal marriage signed would give you a bonus I suppose.

Interesting. If heir can become general, why not one of envoys (mostly diplomat, but also trader, missionary, or colonist)? By random event he could either be killed, increase one of his stats, or change his legitimacy (positive or negative)

No to this idea. Play the hand you're dealt.
... and yes to the +1, +1, +1 for re-electing a Doge, Stadtholder, whatever President? If them Republic chiefs of state get a nice "re-education" every x-years, so them silly aristocrats deserve none? Is this fair, I ask you?

Yours kindly,
AdL

Interesting. If heir can become general, why not one of envoys (mostly diplomat, but also trader, missionary, or colonist)? By random event he could either be killed, increase one of his stats, or change his legitimacy (positive or negative)

His original stats will have some impact on this too, as he will be naturally better at e.g. Diplomacy. In any case, it shouldn't be a game-changer, at best it should give a small benefit.

No. You want the rulers that are good at what you choose, become republic.

The point of playing Monarchy, exactly is the fact that you on`t choose you ruller`s son/daughter abilities and have to be flexible and change your priorities, while Republic allows you to have stable goverment focused on one thing for centuries.

In that case, take away choice for player in republic when elections happen. Let the people choose. Or are saying you are okay with ballot stuffing?
