Simple question really, could be male or female. I personally have enjoyed finding characters like Francesco Petrarcha, Edward Ætheling, or Roussel de Bailleul giving them land & see what happens.

Needless to say Harold Godwinson / William the Conqueror are obvious playthroughs, but am I missing more cryptic characters?

Just an open thread asking what your most exciting historical characters have been?

Isaakios Komnenos, governor of Antioch in 1066.

You do unfortunately need to console traits in because he doesn't have any preset - I usually go for Skilled Tactician and Ambitious. It's interesting seeing what could have been with him - especially since his father has a claim on the Empire and he can inherit that.

I think what you are looking for is the
Interesting Characters Guide
and the local forum thread it's based on
Thanks, but this wasn't what I had intended. Rather, my desire was simply to make a thread where players can share their favourite historical character playthroughs.

I am aware of the "interesting characters guide" and thank you for bringing it to greater attention. I'm also familiar with a sticky thread where female characters like Matilda Canossa and Joan of Toulouse are frequently commented on - however I was keen to hear responses like that of Louis Capet's Isaakios Komnenus at the 1066 start.

Random question: is House of Rochechouart playable from any start date in CKII? I do enjoy starting as a count only to rise and become a king - ideally in a single lifetime!

Oh, alright.
Good for others still.

Don't know , but would advise to start in the latest start date, find the guy (the last i found lives unitl 1356) and have a look into the dynasty tree
to find who owns a landed title (on death) at some point in history.

To find out via file searching, one would have to search the history/titles folder for each character of that dynasty and there are fifteen of them.
Doable with Notepad++ and the Find in Files option, but i won't. Ffifteen is too much.

Outside that you can of course still start a game, give a landless character of that dynasty a title and start and continue playing the game with that one afterwards.

It would have to be Hugues "Le grand" of the Robertiens, father of the Famous Hugues Capet king of the Franks, you start as a Duke but can quickly kick Charles V out of office and claim your rightfull title, then you'll have the crusades coming in a generation or too, as well a strong decentralised german state in the east and maybe a consolidated remnant of Al-Andalus at the south while managing your large southern non dejure vassals.

Otherwise I would say the Bavandid dynasty in both first start dates which direct descendants to the sassanids, or one of the remaining Parthian houses of the old empire.

You also have the mess of that is the byzantine empire where you can essentially just grab half of the houses in any era and they probably have a future or ancient more of less related member of the family which is/was emperor at some point.

Same for the remnant of the caliphate where you have cadet dynasties of the prophets family kind of everywhere (to the point where it's a trait).

Lastly in India there are loads of descendants of very old dynasties (Guptas, Cholas, Pandyans etc...).

I did a Syrian playthrough only recently where I started an Ironman game as count of Sinjar or one of it's neighbouring provinces (Mosul etc) and resurrected the Babylonian Empire as a Messalian Semiramis.. Also achieved Empire of Zun in what I belive was the same save file lol.

It's these rare persons which I seek out the most, be it the Gideons of Semien (which admittedly are far widely known now) or the Jewish Merchant Republic in Almeria right down to the unlanded Easter eggs of Edward Ætheling, Plutarch or Dante who I often appoint as baronial-tier advisors in my utopian Orsini Avignon playthroughs.
