It depends. Besides Rome I like playing as Carthage or some Greek minor or tribal nation. And Egypt is always fun, because in grand campaign you're in war with Seleucids at the start and it's always a tricky situation which needs careful strategy.

So basicly I play as almost anyone, although I rarely play as Asian countries, because I usually have tendency to end up fighting against Seleucids before I'm ready when I'm playing as Armenia, Colchis, Parthia etc.

I would say Rome overall, Rhodes among the Greek states, and Lusitani for tribes. In Epigoni mod I also like Olbia a lot.

Macedonia never gets old. I don't like to start with blobs nor micros. Macedonia has the perfect size, neighbours and geography. Also, as it is greek is it one of the few countries where diplomacy may exist.

The more specialist Cultural nations are my favourite. The big trouble for me with any of the greek nations, is the snowball effect. Once you get some momentum going there is no stopping you. However where you get more culture clash you have to absorb elements into your empire or suffer a hideous research program.

So Tribes are in, along with nations such as Macedonia for me :p

I like to try and play Judea. Its really hard to survive and expand without being destroyed by the two huge nations surrounding you. However, I once did manage to form quite an empire. Though the latest patch seems to have made it impossible to survive the first month of the game.

Besides Rome, Egypt. Defeat the Seleucids, pick up the mantel as being successor to Alexanders empire, and make Alexandria the capital of the world. It's so very satisfying.

And beating Romans as Carthage is pretty cool as well.

Id like to play with one of the big 4 however through observation and experience.

Never actually played as the Selucids, but they do look far too easy, Crazy research, crazy money and access to all military units this all despite the initial manpower issues (which you could always supplement with merc's). The romans, heh can anyone actually lose with them ?. The carthaginians, gobble numidia then its easy street. But the country that i find easiest of all is Egypt, they have so much manpower to throw at any problem and enough cash to destabalise any none Senate based government out there.

Think I will have to investigate Epogni patch finally to get a satisfying game with any of the 4 major powers. Although might be prudent to wait til the cascade bug is fixed.

That's something I haven't tried, but it seems like a fun idea.

I had a satisfying Epigoni game once as Chalcidice, which I picked because of their cool flag. Admittedly I cheated a bit in the beginning because it seemed like an extremely difficult situation (which is it, although now that I've played through it once I can see how it might be possible without cheating), but ultimately I gobbled up all of Greece. Then I edited my save file to move the capitol to Byzantium and change the name of the country to Hellenic Empire.

A Byzantophile would probably enjoy such a game, especially if you manage to do it without cheating in the beginning.

I tend to enjoy Pontus a lot, ability to expand early on and if play well play a role in Seleucid demise (depends highgly on the game though) used to pick them mostly because the female characters could be in command but it's no longer the case hehe

I like the Catuvellauni, mainly because they can use women as generals and governors. Double the chances of getting competent individuals in government.

Plus I always get the urge to start playing my Rule Britannia mp3 once I own the entirety of the British Isles.
