Favorite? That's easy:

The Mitsubishi A6M Zero
I have to agree here. These basically had over 3 times as long range as the American counterpart the Wildcat. And were built like a samurai sword, lightweight and agile 100% offence, no defence.

There is just something special with an airplane that can be found 1400km away from the Carrier its based on, and this was in 1940!

The zero was indeed a great plane and especially for 1940. It just doesn't look that cool to me. But that is taste.

Easy. P-51 Mustang.

Three-way tie between North American P-51D (or H), Focke-Wulf Fw-190 (A series with radial engine) and Me-262 (but Me-262 is cheating anyhow even though the OP allowed multi-engine jets :p ).

Just plain gorgeous all three of them, I get tears in my eyes when I see propper era footage showing these planes in flight. Each is a representative of their own type of engine. I'm not sure I could pick just one but I used to be very partial to the Mustang ever since first seeing one in a book.

Other planes I also like alot but wouldn't put in 1st place:
- Hawker Tempest (3000+ HP when operating under emergency power ? 'nuff said)
- Supermarine Spitfire (if it wasn't for the asymmetrical radiator in early versions ...)
- Fiesler Fi-156 Storch (piloted by Hanna Reitsch, used in Gran Sasso raid)
- Heinkel He-162

I dislike the appearance of most Japanese planes (few Army planes with inline engines being rare exception) and most US planes, they were all just downright fugly, just like their Australian counterparts. Soviet planes were utalitarian, nothing enchanting about them. Some Italian planes did look very nice but I'm not familiar with them well enough to include them in my vote.

I think my favourite for sheer increduality for somebody to design something like it, has to go to the Luftwaffe BV-141;

Bundesarchiv_Bild_146-1980-117-01%2C_Aufkl%C3%A4rungsflugzeug_Blohm_-_Vo%C3%9F_BV_141.jpg

But for production models, I think the Spitfire, Typhoon, Stuka and Nakajima B5N might take pride of places for asthetics and performance.

As a patriot I would say Avia B534 but to be honest I can't... :-D

So I am going to choose Hurricane or Spitfire. Both of them served well for international Czechoslovakian wings in UK.

Not that easy to find one without a forbidden insignia visible...
755 km/h at combat altitude of more than 12,000 m are just bare numbers.
Personally i love the sleek design. It looks so aggressive - a real air superiority fighter. It's a Ta-152, the successor to the Fw-190 and featured a pressurized cockpit for high altitudes.

to clarify, I stressed the importance of single-engine so people would not post naval, tactical or strategic bombers.

Any multi-roles, interceptors, or close air support* are allowed, including the two German jets. I will allow the few twin engine fighters as well.

*any two-engined CAS is not allowed, as for the sake of this thread I'm going to count them as tactical bombers.

I want to vote for the P-38 Lightning but that pesky extra engine keeps ketting in the way. So I will have to go with the P-40. The Flying Tiger shark mouth paint job made it stand out. When used to it's strengths, read Claire Chennault, it was hard to beat. It held the line while as the newer and better known siblings were being designed/built.

I stated earlier on this page that I will allow two-engine fighters. I just wanted single engine emphasized to keep away from strategic, tactical and naval bombers.
