Hey folks! Well, seeing as my favorite tank thread was so popular, and since a few people have expressed an eagerness for it, I gladly create the favorite single-engine aircraft thread!

okay posting rules:

1) FAVORITE. FAV. OR. ITE. not best. FAVORITE.

2) Single-engine aircraft only please. This means only interceptors, multi-roles, and close air support craft. The two German jet aircraft will count as well.

other than that, all is fair :)

Mine's always been the F4U Corsair.

It had an 11:1 kill ratio in air to air engagements, could carry up to 4,000 lbs of bombs (2,000 lbs bomb center line, 1,000 lbs bomb under each wing), armored like a tank, fast and agile.

I must say ME 262, the first kick ass plane which was so fast it is hard to target another plane , but they could only be destroyed when taking off , landing of when they where stationed on the ground.

After the Spitfire it would be the Typhoon and Tempest, damn fine aircraft.
BTW, I think the OP meant "favourite" in regard to aesthetic and style, not just best performance.
Twin Engine would be the Mosquito with the P-38 a close second and four engined would be the Short Stirling and Lancaster.

Surprisingly hard I considered FW190, Mustang, Corsair, George, Hurricane, Tempest but although I love 'em all for various reasons I dont get that thrill down my back like I do when I see a Spitfire flying. So there it is Beauty, Ability, Service length, and that undefinable "something" that for me gives it an almost mystical quality. As they say "if it looks right, it is right" but the Spit goes beyond that. There were aircraft faster, more maneouverable, shot down more aircraft, etc. etc. but to me the Spitfire goes beyond that.
My god, my wife will cite it as a co-respondent in our divorce if she reads this!

I believe you're giving it just a little too much credit. Pilots throughout the war had been making attacks while moving 100km/h+ more than their targets. (The jets just made it much easier to find that extra speed) For aircraft that weren't capable of keeping up with their enemies in turning battles, boom and zoom was the only way. Very effective I might add.

P-40

Good lines and the air intake makes the engine look huge compared to the small aircraft.
