All Google searches for the Spartenos family kick back to here. Who are they? Love to have a historical backdrop, even if it's just a little.
Pretty sure they were invented by Paradox. But whats not to like. The only thing that comes to mind is "THIS is SPARTA!!" :) Playing and succeeding as them is so badass that they might as well be the descendants of glorious Spartans.

There's a series of wiki pages on the Dukes of N(e)apoli . For our timeline you can begin here .

Until 1137 Neapoli was ruled by Greek Dukes .

The last of the line was Sergios VII who died on the field of battle , heirless , against the Normans of Apulia . His alliance won the battle but his death marked the end of Neapolitan autonomy .

The source for this information is John Julius Norwich ( as it is stated in the pages ) , who I think counts as "legit enough" . Also , I am very fond of his writing style . :p

Can't really say if the name of the Dynasty was Spartenos , but at least we know there was a Greek Dynasty there at the beginning of our timeline .

So yeah , GO SPARTENOS !

Mac Duib, gotta love restoring them. Ui Imair, of Atholl, and Knytling come next. I like the "of Atholl" dynasty because they pretty much aren't a dynasty at the start. Just taking one royal scion and form a fresh lasting dynasty with him is fun because he has a good power base as a claimant & prince at the game start.

never really had one before (I mostly played the basque Jimenas because of True Cognatic), but right now playing one as Av Vedrafjord which is the (norwegian) ruler of Ormond at the start. I became the duke of... the upper half of wales (whatever the heck it's called), and then I shanghai'ed that into becoming the kingdom of Sicily so I guess them?

Also I really like the De Rennes.

My first long and successful play-through is in progress and its with the Lusignan family. Loving it. Rose to Duke and more recently the French throne. You can keep the Kingdom of Jerusalem, I like having the Lusignan supplant the House of Capet much better.

According to this Wikipedia page, the name of the dynasty should really be Sergii.

...Let's stick with Spartenos.

They start with Dyfed (the westernmost Welsh county) in 1066, but they don't often hold it for long as the only two people eligible for the throne (the current Count (and Duke of Deheubarth) and his heir) are both in their 60s :p

Actually, they're one of my favourites as well since I played as them back in 1.06 :)

Now that I've been told this I just had to play as them. Original duke died childless but his younger bro inherited and produced a daughter and a son before dying and leaving me with a 15 year regency.

Now 19, king of Wales, and with a mother who has a weak claim on the kingdom of Navarra, might press it and then lose the land associated with it just to get a quirky titular title.

d'Orange, Aquitanian HRE counts. I think they are the ancestors of the current Dutch monarchy, which makes them awesome to play for me.

They are decendants of the german house of Nassau. Hence their name oranje-nassau. The Orange principality was inherited via a cousin of William the Silent.
Interestingly the Dutch royalty do not decent from Nassau via a male line anymore.

If you want to play the family of the founder of the Netherlands you need to look for some ancestor of this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_the_Silent
And if you want to play the family of the current royalty of the Netherlands you need to find some ancestor of this guy: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_William_Friso,_Prince_of_Orange

Probably the Spartenoi, the challenge of taking them from their minor position to Despot of Sicily is a fun one.

He is in the game, but not playable iirc. His son is though.

Oh? Do you remember where and when?

Let's see, I like the Uí Ceinnselaigs - yeah they're ez mode, but I need that. :/ One of these days I also plan to try the Ui Neills since my family is descended from them waaaaaaaaay back. I also like the Bosonids. I don't know if the De Bourgognes would be considered minor at this point or not - I'd like to like them thanks to EUIII, but every time I've tried to play as them Robert the Old gets imprisoned within the first few months, almost immediately after revoking a county. :( Admittedly that was pre-1.07 so I don't know if it's still the same.
