Isn t this the same guy that was relieved of command cause he slapped a shell-shocked soldier? AFAIK, he was in charge of a 'phantom army" in england until sometime after D-Day. So he wasn t exactly a winner all the time either"
Are we talking about the same guy?!?!
He did loose command of the Invasion forces for slapping two "Battle fatigued" pansies, but his third army made a mad dash after the initial invasion. Patton played probably the biggest role in defeating Germans in Africa, and without Patton, the Allies wouldn't have taken Italy so quickly, and who knows how long the war would have lasted. Under Patton, 3rd Army pushed quickly (while inflicting heavy casualties) through France, Belgium, Luxemburg, Czechoslovakia, Austria, and Germany, playing probably the biggest role in Germany's defeat in the Fatherland.
Lt. Gen George Smith Patton Jr. was the greatest general of all time, and no one can argue that fact (MacArthur comes in a close second).
BTW, for Axis I actually would maybe choose Mannerheim of the Finns.
