So how about a positive thread, eh?

It's a cosmetic change but I really like the historical division names. Before, you'd only have special named divisions from the 1936 and 1939 starts, and that was it. Some countries, like Germany, have additional name lists for things like the Waffen-SS. To expand on this, it'd be helpful to have historical ship class names for when you unlock new hull, like the ones pre-Man the Guns.

I also like the occupation mechanics; it's less micro to not have to produce and move around cavalry divisions.

The new focus trees are neat. I'd never expect to be eager to try Portugal or post-capitulation France/Netherlands.

My favorite stuff are:

1> The ship designer
2> Intel, just trying to guess if your convoy raiding or bombing is useful or useless is a sad state. Now with intel you just need to put enough spy effort and you get exactly the info you need :)

Off map garrisons. By a wide margin. The rest of the game doesn't actually feel that different from launch for me, even if things have changed.

Edit: zauberelefant reminded me by mentioning it below, but xp for research boosts. Honestly I wish it was used a lot more and if there were some techs that you could only research by paying an xp cost and waiting.

Overlooked Feature: the efficiency buildup for air missions.
Garrisons.
Ship designer.
Second German focus tree.
The historical division names.
General/admiral traits and the "Chain" of command.
FUEL
Using XP for research.
War support and stability instead of national unity.

The game has come a long way and I am excited for the next two patches!

Literally all the changes the Total War mod makes ;)

Ship designer by far. The naval warfare isn't perfect, nor does it encourage splitting up your fleet as was done historically, as doom stacking is still superior currently(against AI) but damn it's cool to design ships to fit your needs.

Also, Fuel. Hands down the best change to the game since release. Fuel/Oil is the entire reason for the biggest front in WW2, and the fact that it was left out on release was disgusting.

I don’t remember puppet systems in base game. That’s pretty great if I’m remembering correctly.

#1 - Modular ship design
#2 - Intelligence agencies

Big on my dream list is some sort of system to limit how many units the AI nations build/deploy(Especially aircraft). This would have to also limit the player as well otherwise the player could just outbuild the AI and win.

Most likely this has been in game for a long time but just this week I realized that when you attempt to update an active division template (adding SPA or going from 20w to 40w), if you hover over the “update” button (before clicking it) it will show you exactly how much equipment this Template change will require (13,000 tanks lol which I most definitely didn’t have in stock). Much Better than me trying to guess how much equipment this change will mean to my active template divisions in the field o_O

I recently rolled back to 1.4.2 to try for some of the older achievements, and I can tell you, its so much nicer now having AI countries not switch allegiences on the fly [without changing their politics]. I also like how the warscore system has been refined more in favor of the winners. I had just conquered Germany as Austro-Hungary, and focused on annexing the German states I needed, only to have Belgium [of all countries] flip the Germans to democracy, and then the newly democratic Germans got to keep the Sudetenland. Initially, I wasn't too bothered, as just before Germany capitulated, Japan had joined the Axis, so I was surprised to get a peace conference at all. After, democratic Germany was still in the Axis, so I thought I could just re-justify, and re-attack, and all would be fine. Nope - SOviets declared war on Poland, Germany flipped to the Allies, and I was left with no other option but the Comintern. I am getting the feeling the "advice" I'm trying to follow was really only valid for 1.4.0.

I am beginning to think I might have been better off puppeting Italy after conquering it just to reduce the disfavor I got from the Allies.

Its been a while since I rolled the game back, but I am really wishing I hadn't. At least I made a point of copying my save files, just in case.

But to answer the OP - I really do like the new naval system, I just wish that they had given everyone more research slots. All the new naval techs really stretch things out. It used to be 6-8 months to research a capital ship, but now you have to research the hull, and while that might only take 3-4 months, all the other components also have to be researched, and so you end up with a year or more, or you build it with lesser tech and watch as it gets sunk on its first battle. Majors at least need 1 to 2 more research slots. But I do like the way the game has progressed.

In a way it was 1.3.3 that convinced me that the devs were DEFINITELY committed to their work; I recall reading a diary about how one of them had to toss out an old section of code and start from scratch because the old way of calculating naval distances was taking up too much time on the CPU. That alone told me that whatever the price of the DLCs to come, it would be worthwhile as the dev team would do what they had to do to get their job done. Not a lot of companies go that far these days.
