Hey guys, I was just wondering what your favorite format for AAR's is.

Diaries: Told from the viewpoint of generals, soldiers, government officials, and the leaders themselves, etc.

Historian Style: Told as though you're reading a history book.

Newspaper: Told as though reading a newspaper article.

RL Point of View: Told as yourself, telling what you did in game and why, rather than roleplaying.

A mix of Historian/Diaries: Exactly what it says. A historian style, but including the points of view of different characters to add a more personal touch.

Personally, I prefer a mix of historian and diaries, because it puts in a lot of detail, telling what your country did, but it also adds a good personal touch. What are your favorites.

I also agree with Mr. Capiatlist. Narratives are my favorite, but history-books are a close-second. :)

Narratives for me...though I like reading the gameplay and comedies I feel more engaged with narrative.

Where does that fit into the poll?

It's hard for me to answer this -- I like each, for different reasons, and at different times (for different reasons). :)

I guess all in all, I prefer narratives, followed by historybook, followed by gameplay.

But on the other hand I have limited time, and when I have limited time, I prefer gameplay, followed by historybook, followed by narrative! :D

I think much like Rensslaer: In principle I prefer narrative, history book, then gameplay. IMHO that also happens to be reverse order of difficulty.

When rushed though, working my way through characterization might be more than I'm willing to handle so I'll look for something simple.

I have only recently started reading AAR's, but I have read a lot as of late. The ones I find most enjoyable are those which combine characters, with depth preferably, and historical overtones. As an historian myself (burgeoning anyway) I have to read too much history as it is and like the idea of being able to enjoy reading the AAR without being bogged down with the historical details. I agree as well that basically in any format good comedic AAR's are just bliss to read.

History book AARs are generally my favourite. Although I do like some narrative and comedic AARs. However, the problem with those genres is you need to get them exactly right (comedy more so than narrative). There is nothing better than a really good comedy or narative AAR. Yet is is very difficult to get it right.

Project focus: clear initial goals and areas of interest which inform entire AAR, particularly influencing the consistent inclusion of relevant information and tweaking of general guidelines to fit particular topic and objectives.
Content and style: conversational gameplay with optional historical context, extensive analysis, and attention to the decision-making process.
Graphics: picture-light ranging to picture-optional, incorporating mix of screenshots (notably relevant maps and pies), annotated or compiled screenshots (especially when explaining geographic goals, war operations, trade situations, etc.), historical photographs (including images of historical documents), and original material. Guideline of four images per post, accompanied by minimum of "many" words.
Length: single post or short-haul.
Update schedule: sporadically intensive, promptly finished.

There aren't a lot of these to read, so I write them instead.

I'm very much a fan of History book AARs, but don't really manage to read enough of them. One of the best AARs I have ever read was demokratickid's Historia Slovakiæ, and very much effected my own style of writing
