Dear Kan,

You've mentioned that people would be forcibly featured as leaders of opponent nations in this game. Personally I hope you get bogged down in the east: it would indicate the game *does* have something on offer to challenge you. To that extent, I volunteer as some kind of (surviving) Soviet general. I want to see your advances stalled by an AI that *can* handle your skill. I want to see you fail to reach your winter 41 halt lines. I want to see you rolled back in 1943, and cowering in your bunker some time before 1950.

Jan 1st 1937

The end of the first year has no great significance. Unlike normal play I am not interested in slider moves or minister changes. Current technology is coming along nicely and production is limited to 34 factories and a few supplies. Stockpile growth is good and there is plenty of everything coming in.

Time for the inspector of panzer troops to do his bit and work out just how things are meant to work. This is a key technology for the armour programme as it gives some cost reductions and I don’t want to be starting production before I have this.

Feb 21st 1937

With the tech mods I can start Basic infantry nice and early a get a good well geared run to produce all the infantry divisions I want without having to do any unnecessary upgrades. When my 3 rounds of factory builds finishes I want to start building everything to make best use of gearing and available IC. This means developing all the enabling technologies before the end of 1937. This isn’t too bad since many unit types are best built obsolete and upgraded so I just need the first instance technology which allows me to build them at all. Key objectives are CAS I and Escort I.

It is interesting to see that 1939 infantry divisions are characterised by 81mm mortars and I’m not convinced that the crew is from a regular infantry division. It does seem like a fair appraisal of a key weapon for this unit.

I have switched naval doctrines and our key naval researcher gets to work on a much better doctrine tree. I have started in plenty of time to give Kenneth a chance to get a good few under his belt before we have to fight the British.

Now the air doctrine researchers are getting started, Jag-Stang is the best but the air doctrines require such a mixture that a few others will get to have a go as well.

Aracnid Marine has completed research on Improved Carriers and after nearly two months wait I have started building 6 runs of carriers. The wait was for the second round of factories to finish. The carriers are given some priority but the third round of factories is also being started. There are a number of other builds put in the queue but not funded. These are there because they will shortly become obsolete models and yet it is cheaper to build these and upgrade than to build the later models. By queuing the builds I can still build this model later even if the model has been made obsolete. This applies particularly to fighters, tactical bombers and armour.

Another blueprint stolen, not so useful but still something I may well research at some point. We can also see the state of the USA. Their forces remain relatively weak but their technological progress is pretty much as good as ours. Once they get over their pacifism the US will turn into an industrial giant. Meanwhile their pacifism keeps down industrial growth as well as military growth.

It is time to roll out our best author to develop some better artillery. Basic field artillery appears to consist of British 5.5” gun howitzers, a nice gun but not really contemporary with this phase of the war. Again it is more efficient to build early artillery and upgrade so I have queued the appropriate builds.

The proper war has broken out in the Far East – Japan versus China. This should go on for a long time and it is in my interests that Japan does not finally defeat China. My ideal outcome would be Japan dominating China but failing to annex them. This will produce a strong Japan that will fight the USA but will allow me to annex China separately from Japan.

The Spanish Civil War seems to have lapsed into one of those eternal stand off situations where one side holds very little but with sufficient force that the other side never attacks them. It is a bit silly but I wouldn’t be surprised if it stays like this for at least a couple of years.

Kenneth the great is proceeding nicely into the carrier doctrines. This is essential for a dominant navy in 1939. The current schedule will have 2 rounds of carriers (giving a total of 12) ready for May 19th 1939. The illustration is presumably showing us all just how important it is to award medals although I’m slightly bemused over the link with the doctrine.

Counter-intelligence has finally managed to more or less clear out all foreign spies. This will leave some significant funding available for other intelligence activities. This will allow us to build up to 10 spies in the UK and run two blueprint collection projects.

Time to start wheeling out the tank designers. My full build of Pz I divisions is already in the queue. The objective is to reach Pz III (medium armour III) in good time for the outbreak of war in April 1939. Unfortunately I’m really not sure what the illustration is (except that it is a tank) – anyone?

Another nice blueprint which I will definitely be using some time. The UK is developing some nice technology and is going to put some pretty good stuff up against us. There seems to be no realistic prospect of technological superiority over the UK.

This is a good blueprint to get. I know the US has this technology as it is in their set up and it gives me a significant cost saving if I can research it before building any transport aircraft. Unlike other aircraft types, transports get cheaper as technology advances so it pays to start up a couple of steps.
