September 25th-26th 1940
I’m going to keep the routine updates until the end of September (game time) when there will be a short interruption for statistics. I don’t know if you can all remember what the hell is going on but I can’t so I need a review and I thought you might as well all watch. But for now we will carry on with the routine stuff.

Here we have a small US flotilla attempting to exploit the close proximity of the two German main fleets. The real main fleet is now on its way to Ireland to suppress US naval action in support of their invasion. Since the US DOW I have been hiding in the Mediterranean but I now have to venture out and see what US forces are drifting around. The Mediterranean is only open to US forces that happened to be there already from before the DOW or which arrive via the Suez Canal. This makes the Mediterranean a safe haven and hiding there has been intentional whilst my air power sees what develops out in the big bad ocean. So far this hasn’t been much but if you remember the scale of the US navy (soon to be re-reported) you will realise it isn’t a going to be a safe place.
The Kriegsmarine will be heading for Ireland by a coastal route well covered by German air power and ports to escape into. Despite the serious firepower my fleet deploys I don’t want to be engaging in pitched naval battles with a nation that can throw 40 modern CVs at me even before calling on its allies. This isn’t, of course, an issue of fear as most of you will realise, it is in fact about caution. Currently there is nothing to be gained from risking the fleet so I won’t risk it. It a little while we may see some major naval battles but for now it is all about skirmishing and making sure that I don’t lose even a single ship.
Meanwhile in southern France I have retaken Nimes and only need to concentrate my forces before destroying the rest of the Vichy army in Marseille. Unfortunately they have a substantial force but as long as I am quick the majority will be at very low org. All forces are moving to the east side of the river so that I optimise my attack strength and the attack will go in as soon as the panzer group in Genoa has returned to Toulon.

Meanwhile at the far southeastern corner of operations we discover just how important Basrah is. It seems to have been provided with a more than adequate defence by quite a few countries. Combined this turns out to be a little excessive. My two division advance into Aberdan has to count as a probe and they got out of there sharpish just as soon as anyone objected.

Meanwhile the air raid ambushes continue with some fighters in Athens doing the dirty on the Syrian air force. This is an especially annoying raid since I know they got those tactical bombers from Germany in an event sequence not so long ago. Still, the AI needs every advantage it can get. Needless to say they withdraw with low org and very serious losses.

Back in Italy the lead command elements of my army have decided that discretion is the better part of valour and they better hoof it back to Venice before someone tries to cut them off. In the Alps the race is on for Trento. The Italian division there (militia of all things) has been defeated but there is a race between major German and major Italian forces. Whoever gets there first will hold this key defensive location. Capturing it will make a big difference to the jumping off point for the Italian invasion. If the Italians get there first I will probably have to wait for a lot more divisions to arrive to avoid the potential loss of life from a “weak” attack.
Remember that the Russian campaign only cost 67,500 put beyond military service and I’m not about to rack up the casualties in some minor campaign elsewhere. It remains my game policy to minimise casualties even beyond the level of optimised combat performance.

We have finally encountered a more significant US fleet but they remain incapable of closing and without CVs they have no chance. A more worrying issue is the near total dominance of modern ships which hints at the state of the rest of the US fleet. The game mods I made focus on recent US fleet growth so that huge fleet of theirs is probably made up of model IV ships. This battle, however, ends well with the sinking of two US heavy cruisers. This is the secondary German fleet and has only 6 CVs guarded by a real mixed assortment of modern and obsolete ships.
The main fleet only has 12 CVs and there are a further 4 working up in Kiel along with other new ships.

Off the coast of Spain yet another AI nation makes an appearance offering up a couple of antique destroyer flotillas for target practice. Currently I’m not bothering to report all the bombing of the west coast of Europe since no significant targets have turned up. The recorded images focus on new nations being spotted but there is a slow accumulation of bomb damage on AI ships although very little in the way of actual losses.

Meanwhile, the rapid response force of naval bombers is on the scene and bombing passing ships. The US landing fleet has clearly gone since these ships are the wrong nationality. It looks to me like they are part of the so called vanguard. Possibly using sandwich boards for torpedo protection.
The rapid relief force consists of 4 very low org interceptor squadrons and 16 naval bomber squadrons. The naval bombers have arrived with reasonable org but the real targets seem to be long gone from the area.
