rcduggan Oddly enough I had a "those pictures don't work" moment as well. The "tinypic" servers are usually very reliable for serving images but slightly flaky on posting (but that's just my problem)

El Pip Actually the "somewhat disturbed" is an exageration, in reality I am not the slightest bit worried about it. Currently I am wondering whether to just DOW everyone now and get it over with. This thought has been triggered by Bulgaria joining in the silly DOW games.

lifeless If you look back a bit to the post Barbarossa situation report you will see a deserted northern Italy. It hasn't changed so actually I have no idea who will get there first. I await the baffling extent of the AIs incompetence with interest.

GhostWriter The one reliable regular fan for all AAR writers, always lets you know somebody is reading. There ought to be a reader of the year award for sheer persistence.

TeutonburgerW We did have someone converting it but I think they may have got a little daunted. I may do it myself one day since everything is word processed before posting. PDF would at least allow some better formatting, not something I currently bother too much with.

If the readers can stick with HOI2 DD then so can I

That was certainly a quick work against Finland, but I guess you got lucky since the Finns didn’t reinforce Murmansk. The Italians and the Turks seems to have declared war upon the wrong country, so I think it was good and natural that you DoWed them instead. As you say this might give you a little trouble as your forces are not at the correct positions, but I think the Luftwaffe will do well disorganizing the enemies and maybe also destroying some divisions. Then I guess you could also use some paratroopers to ensure quick victories, but then I guess it will be necessary to make sure that there aren’t large enemy forces around so that you can avoid losing divisions because that would be very bad.

As normal I presume the campaign will involved large Luftwaffe units and strong forces to avoid large casualties and that is probably the best way to do it :)

Kanitatlan said:
Lord E That's only a quick victory if you don't count travel time.

Yes, of course if you have to take travel time into account it is clear that it might be slow, but the way it turned out it sure was very clear it was a quick and great victory

Oh and don’t quit this AAR because of EUIII, please continue it.

08:00 August 18th 1940

The new situation with Romania, Italy and Turkey added to my opponents is a lot more interesting than before. Just for background the “in position” forces consist of …

2 motorised divisions on Turkey’s eastern border
2 infantry and 2 HQs on Romania’s eastern border.
1 Garrison in Athens
1 Garrison in Switzerland.

The immediate concern is for Turkey’s eastern border where there are significant Turkish forces that could force me back in the Caucasus. If they advance than I will immediately retreat as there is little point fighting a losing battle. I have lots of forces moving to this area and loss of some provinces will be extremely disruptive due to failed strategic moves. The target provinces are sufficiently diverse that major forces will succeed so there is no real worry of a major set back.

In Europe I have large forces heading for Eastern Romania and since they are not actually on border themselves I am not worried at all. Further west there is a bit of an issue since the Italians and Romanians could relatively easily isolate Greece. This would be awkward as I have no good sea supply path and evacuating would disrupt my Fallschirmjäger arrangements (amongst other things).

On the Italian mainland the real puzzle is where the hell is their army. I have no intelligence on where their forces are except that they are not on the border. It will be some considerable time before my post Finland strategic moves to Switzerland complete and therefore I am highly vulnerable. To be fair I do have some forces arriving much sooner by sea but they are heading for the French west coast and must approach via Vichy.

My Mediterranean coasts are extremely vulnerable to an obviously perfectly capable Italian navy. The Italian AI has no realistic pre-programming for this situation but there are many locations for unopposed landings that will put me in difficulties. The German navy is all concentrated around Finland at the moment although it is moving to the Mediterranean for further operations.

12:00 August 18th 1940

The first actions are the huge outbreak of air activity over Romania. This was already planned before this great DOW fest so the Romanians are already in trouble. There are about 2,000 fighters and 5,000 CAS indulging in their normal activities over Romania. Unfortunately all the German units are at relatively low org and there is the constant risk of relatively weak enemy forces disrupting operations.

The Romanian ground deployment is nicely concentrated around their VPs and this is probably their best strategy. If they tried to defend the borders they would just be an easier target for my bombers and ground units.

43pxvuf.jpg

12:00 August 18th 1940 b

The first priority west of Romania is the Italians in Albania who must be destroyed before they can advance into my Yugoslav territories. I have 16 CAS and should be able to eliminate these two in 4-6 days as long as they are good enough to stay not dug in.

2nk2v0y.jpg

16:00 August 18th 1940

My interceptor patrols seem to be succeeding in catching all the enemy air before they can do anything. The Turkish air force appears to be nicely obsolete but with escort fighters. This is unfortunate since the “free” escort fighters are in fact relatively advanced compared to other minor country air units.

The Eastern end of this image is quite interesting as it shows the strength of Turkish border forces. Clearly quite capable of advancing but not bothering to do so. Rather strangely the Turks seem to have assigned most of their army to the Italians as expeditionary forces. There seems to be no great harm in this except that it may disrupt their offensive operations by creating division of command.

21:00 August 18th 1940

There are German interceptors flying all over northern Italy because of worries about exactly this type of air unit. I remember the naval bombers in Edge of Darkness (can’t remember if they were Italian). They tended to fly a long way across Europe and bomb undefended fleets miles behind the lines. I have units working up in north German ports and I would like to intercept these bombers here (there are some interceptors in Kiel just in case). Obviously this intercept is not dramatically effective but it will suppress them a bit and shows that I can catch them here. It is a little worrying to see how many there are and I am tempted to evacuate my new ships to somewhere in the far north just to be on the safe side.

More air combat with enemy air units. Again this is a night battle so not dramatically effective. If the land invasion was in full swing this would probably ground them permanently but I suspect they will be back.

44rvbmc.jpg

03:00 August 19th 1940 b

A Turkish TAC group has made it all the way through my interceptor patrols and managed a night bombing raid – losses no doubt 2 or 3 cows and a damaged barn. This is the second group of 4 Turkish TACs give some indication of a not insubstantial air force.

42tc39i.jpg

10:00 August 19th 1940

Albania is empty after just 24 hours. That went rather better than I expected. The CAS can now move to their proper role – pounding Romania.

30hrm1t.jpg

14:00 August 19th 1940

The return of the NAVs is rather short lived. This beautiful demonstrates the AI air power dispersal in time problem. The first encounter was with 9 NAVs all together. As a result of that first indecisive combat the NAVs have been grounded recovering org for a short time. The problem is that each group is ready to fly again at a different time and hence I get to fight them 1 at a time instead of all together. This is a massive AI weakness for air power and makes it easy to defeat them once you have established your ability to dispute air superiority. This group will no doubt not be seen again for a very long time if at all.

47vo7l0.jpg

14:00 August 19th 1940 b

The one successful (?) enemy air group gets its comeuppance. These bombers will probably not return soon. Notice how much more the first one with no escort is suffering. I don’t really believe this is a demonstration of the value of escort fighters, I think it more likely that coincidence is responsible – but you can’t be sure.

29em7vo.jpg

14:00 August 19th 1940 c

Here comes, well what is it exactly. Can you believe it, it’s the Persian air force. They can’t be bothered to defend their own country so they are heading for Romania which is suffering much heavier bombing. I guess they aren’t going to get there though. This has to be the most unbalanced air combat seen for a long time but you’ve got to be impressed that Persia has 400 fighters.

Turkish fighters are slightly better but 4:1 does them in – permanently – as well.

A nice treat with some successful espionage for a change. This is actually something I might conceivably research one day so not bad going at all. Really I’m hoping for naval doctrines and naval technology but no such luck.

34pgxoy.jpg

16:00 August 20th 1940

My naval bombers are now all on station out in the Atlantic looking for targets with periodic success. I’m not catching much at the moment but there shouldn’t be much Allied naval power about.

The first army arrives at the Romanian border and a tentative ground invasion begins.

00:00 August 21st 1940

Disaster strikes further west. Four Romanian cavalry divisions capture Nis and begin heading for the only major air base in the area. The big question now is “how long does it take Romanian cavalry to march from Nis to Belgrade?” (No it’s not a competition). I reckon it must take them at least 2 days so I am going to fly 2 days of missions against them before running for it. I can’t risk losing 16 CAS squadrons to ground attack so I can’t be too daring.

2h2ozza.jpg

15:00 August 21st 1940

Meanwhile in Persia the steady destruction of allied units continues. Both Teheran and Abadan have been completely cleared and now my air power is working on the last threat. Movement times into the mountains are huge so I have lots of time to reduce these divisions. Eastern Persia appears to be secure from allied intervention until my forces arrive but western Persia remains under threat from advancing enemy troops.

Perhaps you are right, but as the advantage of extra strikes is minimal while the risk is losing 16 CAS wings discretion is, once again, the better part of valour.

Ghostwriter, El Pip Whilst it is true that air attack definitely slows units down it is not so clear how much. It is also worth bearing in mind that the slowing will only occur during the 4 hours of an actual attack. This leaves their arrival time even more indeterminate and since I have no confidence of safety beyond 2 days then that is the limit, air units are just too expensive to accidentally lose.

Bloody Romanians why can’t they just stay in their country and be killed by the Luftwaffe, I agree in moving them away after 2 more days, no point in risking 16 CAS divisions. Still seems like this campaign will be really easy for the infantry, as the Luftwaffe has already destroyed almost all ground units it will only be a matter of marching in and occupying the provinces it seems.

Rather than reply to the immediate comments I am going to move things on to the end of the month where things develope a much more interesting flavour.

Two days of raids has removed the Romanian cavalry, which is something of a relief. The close proximity allows two raids per day and the +15% bonus for operating near to base. The biggest benefit is of course the double raids effect. This is a huge issue and a very good reason for trying to operate from air bases very near to your targets. This is all very satisfying and allows the bombing campaign to continue unimpeded.

14:00 August 23rd 1940

The museum squadron finally strikes. They are no longer frightened by enemy convoys and have dared to sink a whole ship. Perhaps they are trying to justify staying in service but it has to be said this really isn’t good enough. Lets face it, 3 squadrons of u-boats and all they can manage is to sink one ship.

04:00 August 24th 1940

More German armies have arrived at the Romanian frontier and the invasion has begun developing into a broader attack aimed at capturing the Romanian VPs. The Romanian forces in the east of the country are badly depleted but they are looking to be in significant strength in the heart of their country. It is likely that completion of the conquest will not be possible until ground forces are fully concentrated.

12:00 August 24th 1940

Another single British ship to sink, they may not be appearing in force but the Azores area seems to be attracting significant allied naval activity. I shall be keeping up the air patrols and probably increasing them to deplete allied forces further and to try and maintain some semblance of naval domination in the eastern Atlantic.

21:00 August 24th 1940

The high seas fleet has encountered an allied fleet just of Gibraltar. I feel a mass sacking of Luftwaffe pilots coming on again as this is a patrolled sea area. The encounter is indecisive and the fleet carries on into the Mediterranean. My main fleets are all moving to the Mediterranean to engage with the enemy fleets there. Their first task is to dispute naval control and to make sure no “unfortunate” landings occur in the western Mediterranean. After that I may be moving on to my own naval operations but that will have to wait until some of the land operations are complete and ground forces become available on the Mediterranean coast.

The positioning values look a bit close and are inclined to make me a bit nervous. No enemy fleet has ever managed to close on any of my carrier fleets but there is always a first time.

09:00 August 25th 1940

Another encounter with Italian NAVs does serious damage. It is hard to tell how much from watching a battle but becomes quite obvious when you meet them again (see further on)

3zsyzys.jpg

17:00 August 25th 1940

Finally the first sight of significant Italian forces. They do at least appear a bit closer to northern Italy than I am but not by much. It looks like the Italian threat in the centre of Europe realise is a complete illusion.

19:00 August 25th 1940

The Portuguese navy still appears to have something left. Somewhat earlier in the year I was writing them off as completely gone and yet here they are. The Azores are beginning to look like a tough nut to crack with naval forces, 4 divisions and 7 air units. This may not be too difficult to take in a concentrated assault but is clearly not going to be susceptible to quick raiding attack. If the US starts flying serious aircraft from this base then I may have some problems to address.

33wmj5g.jpg

22:00 August 25th 1940

The first time took these NAVs from 4 at full strength down to this state so I guess there won’t be many survivors after this battle. Exit one NAV group.

00:00 August 26th 1940

My technology continues to improve. This is minor step and a small drain on the upgrade budget. The next tech is Destroyer V so I can start my builds. I selected Destroyer V as a target type for reasons given earlier and clearly need to get the technology before my capital ship builds create a serious shortage of screens.

The Turks have carried out the first real exploitation of German weakness and taken one of my least important assets in the theatre. Losing Crete does not affect anywhere else and I would never use it as a base whilst there are perfectly good mainland bases nearby.

Notice the Italian forces in North Africa providing some explanation of where some of the Italians are. They do have well over 100 divisions total so there must be many elsewhere.

15:00 August 26th 1940

Over the black sea my interceptor squadrons have switched to naval attack to allay the boredom. They aren’t really going to achieve anything strafing Italian destroyers but they seem to enjoy it so I haven’t the heart to stop them. If nothing else they seem to have achieved some narrowing of the enemy leadership, although I have no idea how they have done it.

05:00 August 27th 1940

An Italian antique squadron has intercepted the museum squadron. Unfortunately antique is better than museum although we don’t end up losing any units. This is a near miracle and the museum flees for dry land. I think it is probably time this lot really were sent to the museum as they have no realistic role in a modern navy.

16:00 August 27th 1940

New TAC squadrons flying from Athens exact some revenge. These TACs are not yet fully upgraded and therefore should be used in a way that leaves them grounded every night. I’m not trying too hard on this at the moment but I really should make sure they get upgraded.

Anti-naval operations in the Mediterranean are currently very subdued and are unlikely to develop much until the Balkan land campaigns are finished.

08:00 August 28th 1940

Operations in Romania have been slightly curtailed as I wait for further reinforcements to arrive. The initial attacks where a little less efficient than my normal standard so I have focused current operations onto more limited objectives until a stronger frontline force has been collected. Bombing continues but has little obvious impact on total enemy strength.

Notice the grand list of battles taking place with everything except the battle of Tulcea being air attacks of one sort or another.

10:00 August 28th 1940

The submarine group sent to harass the convoys to the British forces in my west African provinces has had its first success. It seems like a long time since I sank anything and I am getting worried that the u-boat campaign has seriously faltered. The last success was 11 transports on August 8th. This is starting to look like a rate of 1 per day which will take several years to deplete British assets. There must be a “leak” in the screen and I will have to look to tightening up the u-boat screen across the mid-Atlantic.

18:00 August 29th 1940

The Turkish navy has got involved in the museum competition but still we manage to escape without losing a ship. This is turn into quite an adventure, it is only sad that the ending is less than happy (known as the scrap yard).

33nhwya.jpg

03:00 August 30th 1940

Continued bombing of allied forces in Persia is failing to create any reduction in their strength. I am hoping this is due to the constant cycling of new units since they are still moving but I cannot be certain how much damage I am really doing with watching very closely.

497xo9k.jpg

21:00 August 30th 1940

I have sent a real u-boat pack into the central Mediterranean to start interfering with Italian convoys. They have run into a small Italian fleet and drawn blood. Whilst destroying an enemy unit is always nice I have also suffered the temporary loss of 3 u-boats that are sent back to port for repairs. One of them is only just afloat whilst the other two are only lightly damaged. Ship damage is a constant drain on operational strength and it is preferable to be left alone to sink convoys.

00:00 September 2nd 1940

A few German divisions have finally arrived west of Romania and just in time. A quick strike north into Nis eliminates the risk to the air base in Belgrade once and for all. This finally tidies up the map in this area and sets me up for some offensive operations.

33fcfna.jpg

04:00 September 2nd 1940

The main high seas fleet arrives and promptly sinks an Italian battleship. Our first real bite of their fleet and hopefully a good sign of what is to come.

Right on the heels of this the Bulgarians decide to join in and immediately receive the standard treatment. After a quick save, edit and reload they are at war with me instead leaving almost global war in Europe.

The US President

“It has become apparent that the Government of Germany, pursuing its course of world conquest, intends to make war on the rest of mankind. German forces are steadily attacking the remaining peaceful nations of Europe.
The long known and the long expected is beginning to take place. The forces endeavouring to enslave the entire world are now moving toward this hemisphere.
Never before has there been a greater challenge to life, liberty, and civilization.
Delay invites greater danger. Rapid and united effort by all of the peoples of the world who are determined to remain free will ensure a world victory of the forces of justice and of righteousness over the forces of savagery and of barbarism.
I therefore request the Congress to recognize a state of war between the United States and Germany.”

Fu Manchu

“It is my firm belief that the establishment of a sphere of common prosperity throughout Greater East Asia is not only the Empire’s policy, but indeed a historical necessity in the event of world history. And those countries which exist in that sphere can contribute to the peace of Asia as well as to that of the world by their procuring each its own place and enjoying common prosperity amongst them. For that purpose I need hardly say that it is of vital importance that there should be security and stability in this part of East Asia.

With the united empire of the petal throne we have taken the first step towards restoring the role of a Greater East Asia but there is still much to be done. Today we find the biggest threat is a Germany bent on world conquest and the subjugation of all mankind. We now step forwards as the equals of the western powers in opposing the aggressive new colonialism.

A state of war will now exist between the Empire and Germany

Long live the emperors.”

Germany is now at war with every power in the world except the Comintern alliance.

As soon as a representative of the Russian government posts a suitable speech then we will be at war with them too

Enslave the entire world? How dare they? Kanitatlan is clearly going to get a pen and some paper, and work out a mathematical formula which will mean everyone has food and shelter and does an equal share of the work, as soon as he has the entire world under his benevolent rule!
