Basically, is the colonist island hopping thing still the same as the old map? What dip tech will it be feasible to start and how long will it take?

EDIT: Another thing to ask: Do you guys do the colonist trick where you get 10 settlers each time you send a colonist, recall, then send him again?

I don't think that this was changed in AoW. You'll have less monetary gains from your colonizing along the way to westernization, but you'll do everything else just as before 1.8.

Is there a map somewhere of the provinces to colonize in order? Never actually tried the africa island hop but I do know you're trying to border spain/portugal.

Colony hopping was not the way to finish westernization as Ming in 1511 in patch 1.7 and I don't see why it would be in 1.8 either ;).

They did pull the vassal sale trick though.

Get QftNW. Sail to the new world. Find an European colony in process which borders a finished one. Wait for it to be almost completely finished. Snipe it, wait for it to finish and westernise. You can also then abandon the idea group if you have no colonisation goals.

You can use this old trick to westernise ridiculously early. Earlier than 1500 if you're real quick.

You underestimate the Portuguese. That said it was much faster to take the old north african provinces that were removed in 1.8. that the Iberians just loved to colonise.

You can't westernize while at war and what European nation is going to just live that down and sign peace?

African route wouldn't work now I think. I used to westernize by going to Maldives - Annex Kilwa - somewhere around cape - annex Kongo - annex a west African nation - snipe a province from Mali bordering portugal/spain. Now there is no border between Mali and Spain that early on, so I'm not sure. It used to be doable by 1515 if everything went smoothly.

The reason for the delay is not getting the colony. The reason for the delay is actually falling enough #techs behind. You generally want DIP 3 just to allow decent growth rate (colonist can't be sent there after all), and sitting on MIL 2 and ADM 4 blows a lot of points inefficiently.

When I did it as Ming, that later-than-1500 date was a combination of not being behind enough techs and Ming's size slowing the process down.

The European nation can't do anything since they can't reach you so they can't get the 10% warscore required to ask for anything decent. They'll sign a peace deal for a couple ducats and maybe some war reparations after a couple months.

The method most definitely works, tried in a game only a few hours ago. Was thinking about using it for my Kochin playthrough but I'm thinking protectorate cheese will be better if it still works.

It's not ideal by any stretch of the imagination to try and rush westernisation that early. It is possible though if you really want to force it for some reason (maybe rushing the Kilwa achievement if you're that impatience?). The question was fastest path to westernisation after all.

Kilwa is Indian now anyway, but even last patch you could just snag it and not bother going western lol.

How are you able to reach the new world without naval attrition sinking all your vessels before they get there?

It will take you just as long trying to get to the New World to border a CN (and a wasted idea slot) than it would for you to focus on your region and wait until Portugal or Castille arrive in Malaysia. Just wait until they arrive, then fabricate a claim on their new land and conquer it. This worked for me.

It will take some time, but that ticking war score will eventually give you enough to win it and have your ticket to Westernization. If it is an island you aren't able fabricate a claim on, then you can risk an Aggression War. If you have focused on building up a strong power base, vassals and allies by the time they arrive you should be able to win the wars in your region. Doing the whole 'get to the new world' gamey tactic is a gamble and won't guarantee early westernization. It will also leave you behind in idea groups that could have done something better for your nation since colonizing in Asia is time consuming with every province being tropical or arid.

Don't try getting a border it isn't going to work since it will just become a Trade Company (a completely unsubstantiated barrier).

This is not accurate. Europe does not colonize into SEA by 1500. Colonizing the Philippines and spice provinces and calling that a wasted slot seems awkward too.

1. Good or even decent play will do it consistently.
2. The Philippines and Maldives are temperate. Siberia is arctic but that doesn't penalize colonization too badly. Australia CN is also temperate. The tropical stuff has high value trade goods.

It is accurate that you cannot westernize by 1500 like you used to be able to since you cannot sell home cored provinces to a vassal if it is out of coring range. If you have found a way, then please share the amazing new strategy with us. There is nothing 'awkward' in offering a different strategy, even if it isn't your own. Everyone knows the Spice Island have high value trade goods. The point is you can either do the work yourself or you can take them later. Both are valid ways of playing and that is all I am suggesting. Since most of those goods are already found in Asian proper provinces, it is not as if you don't have access to them already.

The Philippines were changed to tropical as of 1.8. Maldives and the other island hopping points to Africa were changed to temperate. However, you will have to conquer any bordered lands there as well since it will just become a Trade Company. Those tend to be harder to fight there in my campaigns so far. Australia does have some temperate which is another option for sure since they might land there.

The method was already posted. In this thread. Before you made one post in it ^_^.

Strawman.

The Philippines were changed to tropical as of 1.8.

I didn't realize this, partially because 1.8 hasn't worked for me yet. I struggle to run it past the first few years. This does change the equation somewhat, as your best value then becomes the Indian ocean, Siberia, and Australia. However, you still need exploration or you will westernize over 50 years later at the earliest.

European colonies in the new world before 1500?
Sounds like every single game. Honestly, I often see them getting started by 1475 or so. By EU4 standards, IRL Europe was dragging its heels at colonizing.

You can't westernize while at war and what European nation is going to just live that down and sign peace?
Since it's an overseas province and you'll likely be taking it with "seize colony", most of them.

The big problem is they sit there colonizing 1 province islands in the Caribbean. This is less an issue in 1.8, since at least some of them have straits.
