CHAPTER TWO: Part Four: The Reign of Khagan Etrek I, also called Etrek the Pious, Etrek the Old, Etrek the Just, Etrek the Wise, Etrek the Conqueror, Etrek the Good, Etrek the Architect, Etrek the Patron, and Etrek the Great
The khaganate under Etrek is richer and stronger than ever before. It fears no outside enemies, but as Etrek ages many of his relatives start trying to gain the title of Khagan of the Cumans.
It starts in the newly conquered Pecheneg lands, when Sugar, Etrek's Pecheneg relative, shows how grateful he is that Etrek saved his Pecheneg brothers by claiming the be the rightful khagan of not only the Cumans, but also the Pechenegs. Several of Etrek's vassals, sensing that they could potentially gain power under Sugar, join his revolt, creating the Khaganate of Pechenegs.
Etrek, though aged, reacts with a quickness that shows his soul is still young. Troops are mobilized and quickly march on the rouge khagan, but Sugar has no plans of giving up easily. Sugar meets Etrek outside Korsun and Oleshye. Sugar is repulsed in the Battle of Oleshye, but only Etrek summons reinforcements, but Korsun is lost, due mostly to the incompetence of Etrek's generals, who recklessly charge Sugar's forces, despite having far better positions.
Etrek swings out of Oleshye and attacks Korsun, hoping to stop the siege. But Sugar has been carefully reinforcing Korsun and Etrek has greatly underestimated Sugar's troops. Etrek is forced to retreat from Korsun, tasting his first real defeat. He finds it extremely bitter.
Korsun falls and Sugar moves forward, much to Etrek's displeasure. Battle after battle, Sugar bests Etrek, forcing him to withdraw. Etrek continues to mobilize regiments, but it's getting harder and harder to find a willing vassal, as they become displeasured with Etrek's heavy hand. Finally, Etrek is able to gather enough troops to stop Sugar outside the gates of Desht-i-Kipchak, but at a high cost.
The victory is just what Etrek needs. Not only does it revitalize him, it also restores some confidence in his abilities. Slowly, Etrek begins winning again, now with the help of new troops, while Sugar has mobilized nearly all his regiments.
It takes nearly a year and a half, but Etrek reconquers all his lost lands, and starts to attack into Pecheneg proper. Sugar starts sending peace feelers, but Etrek doesn't want tribute, he wants Pecheneg back. Birland, Pecheng's capitol, is sieged after nearly three years of fighting. In 1110, Sugar is finally defeated for the last time, in the Battle of Severin, where Sugar himself is killed in battle. Pecheneg is annexed back into the khaganate in 1111.
Etrek, tired of fighting, settles down and goes to work on the khaganate's finances, lowering sucutage and taxes to appease the people and his vassals. This brings the amount of money Etrek himself is making to nearly single figures, but the cost is worth it, everyone seems to be happy.
Just when Etrek thinks things are quiet, someone needs to disrupt it. The Duchy of Azov, lead by Khutan, a distant relative to Etrek revolts, trying to claim the title of khagan. Etrek, taken by complete surprise, scrambles to assemble an army.
But Khutan isn't the threat Sugar is, because he doesn't enjoy the support of his vassals, who quickly make it clear they're loyal to Etrek, the one true khagan, revolting against Khutan in favor of Etrek.
This civil war is short and to the point. Azov is sieged after only six months, and Khutan is stripped of all his titles, which are then given to his vassals who showed loyalty to Etrek during the Azov Rebellion.
Time passes and Etrek ages, reaching the unheard of age of 70. He's a tired old man, but that doesn't mean he can be pushed around, as the new Georgian king is quick to find out. Oleg, eager to reclaim Alania, declares war on Cuman, hoping to take advantage of Etrek's old age. Etrek shows him that just because he's on in years, doesn't make him senile. Troops are mobilized and push into Georgia, easily defeating the 100 men under Oleg. Soon all of Georgia is under Etrek's control, and Oleg is forced to abdicate and give up his lands to Etrek.
Etrek has seen much in his life. He has seen kingdoms rise and fall and great men fall on their swords. He's been the one behind most of these events. But every great man must face one foe he can't beat: Death. In 1135, Etrek dies in his bed, after living for 78 years, 70 of which he devoted to the ruling of the khaganate.
Khutan, Etrek's oldest son, takes the throne. He has mighty big shoes to fill, but the general census is that he can do it.
