It is. Also, just thought of this: might want to make sure you've got conversion events for the provinces and your vassals. I think DV has Jewish provincial conversion (cf. /db/events/provincial_conversion_events) but I don't think it will convert your vassals the way it does for Xians and Muslims unless you copy those events. I'm not sure where that event is, though what you'd need to do is just copy it, give it a new number, and replace all the catholics with jewish.

crusaderknight: Yeah, Etrek loves the ladies. At last look, he had ten kids.

timetogetaway: I'm going to post a map of the khaganate when 1200 hits. Right now, in Etrek's time, it's Alania, Turkmens (which is half of the Ural provinces), and bits and pieces of Volga Bulgaria, Pechenegs, and whatever else the Cumans start out with.

Specialist290: The trait is romantic.

Llywelyn: I've got both sets of conversion events, but thanks for the concern. I downloaded the province spread/conversion events from someone (I need to find out who, so I can properly thank him/her) and put in the convert vassal events.

Enewald: Several, actually. I granted the Duke of Khazar several provinces in Turkmens and a few have spread out west through marriages.

CHAPTER TWO: Part One: The Reign of Khagan Etrek I, also called Etrek the Pious, Etrek the Old, Etrek the Just, Etrek the Wise, Etrek the Conqueror, Etrek the Good, Etrek the Architect, Etrek the Patron, and Etrek the Great

etrek.jpg

Etrek, now old enough to marry, chooses the daughter of the Duke of Khazars, a direct relation to the Khazars of old, one of the most prestigious and respected families in the khaganate.

With a respectable wife by his side, Etrek manages to pump out five legitimate children and five bastards. His oldest son, Khutan is sent off to study with the Khazars, whom have the largest collection of books on the Jewish faith. The experience can only enrich him.

Etrek next begins to plan for a campaign against the Pechenegs, whom have started to make threatening noises against the Cumans. Etrek create a temporary alliance with the Byzantines, and declares war of the pagan Pechenegs, with Byzantium in haul.

The war is a short one. The Pechenegs, fighting a two front war against the giants of the Black Sea, crumple. When all is said and done, the Pechenegs are reduced to two provinces. Besides removing the Pechenegs as a major power, Etrek has also now created a border with the only other power in the area that rivals the khaganate: Byzantium.

Emperor Alexios lives a life of Orthodoxy and can't stand what he calls the heathens. Now with the Pechenegs gone as a threat, and the Seljuk Turks fighting several of their former vassals, Alexios turns his eyes towards the Jewish Cumans. Its no secret that Alexios considers the Jews only one step above the Pecheneg pagans and that he's determined to destroy the khaganate.

Five years of this peace made of glass follow, with veiled threats made by both Alexios and Etrek, until things come to a head. The Jewish faith is popular among the Pechenegs, and several provinces are quick to convert, seeing the strength that Yahweh has given the Cumans. But when the Jewish faith crosses over into Byzantium, Alexios is out for blood, burning several Pecheneg Jews alive. Etrek's distant relative Sugar, a Pecheneg himself, pleads with the khagan to intervene in the slaughter of his brothers. Etrek agrees. The alliance with Byzantium is broken, and war is declared in July of 1084.

They Byzantines make a weak showing in the Crimea, where they are quickly over run and the duchy of Cherson is annexed into the khaganate. In Pecheneg, things start off a little rocky, as the Greeks mass a force of nearly 10,000 men and ransack nearby Cuman villages. But a force of 12,000 men, lead by none other than Etrek break the Greeks under Alexios in a series of battles that drive the Greeks back into Byzantium. Following his furious counter-attack, Etrek mobilizes several more regiments under the duke of Khazars, and marches into Byzantium.

The Jewish Pechenegs, seeing a chance to shake off the chains of Alexios, rise up against the Greeks and greet Etrek with open arms. Etrek and the duke then encircle Alexios and break his army for the last time at the Battle of Adrianopolios. After looting Byzantium's second richest trading city, Etrek sends a letter to Alexios, demanding a tribute of 500 gold and the complete annexation of Byzantine Pecheneg, or he and his armies will march upon Byzantion. Alexios, broken and humiliated, agrees to all Etrek's demands. Etrek then distributes his new Pecheneg holdings among his family and his most loyal servants, greatly pleasing his vassals at his generosity.

Man, those Greeks got what was coming and good.

Unlike in OTL, the Pechenegs get to stick around...

I don't know if there's a screenshot compiler out there, however.

Photoshop?

As for making a grand map? I think you are going to have to do it the hard way and use the base map RGB provided- at least that is the only way I know how to accomplish the task.

As long as he's ok with all the revolters showing up and bordering countries having the same colors, it's usually much faster to just patch together some f11 screenshots than to click through all thousand or so provinces. And it doesn't look too much worse.

To get the whole map, you need about three shots each from the bottom and middle of the map. The top takes a few more if you don't want the hanging stuff or GAME PAUSED tag to show up on the final product.

I am waiting for Etrek to build his Grand Cathedral made out of gold.
And Solomon had 700 wives and 300 concubines, not the other way around! The man was crazy.

Ah yes, my mistake. I just don't see the sense in that. Plus, wouldn't the nagging of 1,000 women get on his nerves even a little? :p

Actually, due to a bug (or delay in accepting a marriage offer, don't remember which) I have had a king have two wives at once. And they both had kids!

So yeah, polygamy is technically possible in CK.

CHAPTER TWO: Part One: The Reign of Khagan Etrek I, also called Etrek the Pious, Etrek the Old, Etrek the Just, Etrek the Wise, Etrek the Conqueror, Etrek the Good, Etrek the Architect, Etrek the Patron, and Etrek the Great

etrek.jpg

Peace finally settles upon the khaganate, but now that Etrek's gotten a taste of war, he can't help but indulge. His next target is the Rus' Principality of Bjarma.

Prince Oleg, the current head of Bjarma, is also know by his subjects as Bloody Oleg. What did little Oleg do to earn such a name? Perhaps it was the fact that he murdered every Rurikovich in front of him for the other Rus' principalities. And the ones he couldn't inherit, he simply annexed.

By 1085, Bjarma spans from the Baltics to the Urals. But Oleg isn't as good with diplomacy as he is with a knife and Bjarma is always in a state of civil war, as the other Rurikovichs try to regain their independence. It is in this state, Etrek declares war on Bjarma.

The Bjarma campaigns go insanely well for Etrek, though the sheer size of Bjarma is daunting at first. Chernigov, the current capitol of Bjarma is the first of many to be laid to waste by Etrek's armies, followed by Kiev and Pronsk. Oleg counter attacks a month after Chernigov is seized in hopes of gaining it back, but his armies are depleted from fighting upstart counts and can't beat the garrison of 2,000 troops stationed there. From there, things go down hill for poor Oleg, who can't seem to win one battle. To make matters worse, Oleg's vassals continue to feel like revolting. Etrek uses this to his advantage, allying any counts that revolt and using their armies to soften up Oleg.

After five years of war and much Russian country side burned, Etrek offers peace, asking for territory the made up the principality of Kiev and for Chernigov. Oleg refuses the peace, hoping that a few more Russian winters will destroy Etrek and his armies. He couldn't be wronger.

Etrek is livid when he hears Oleg's refusal. This war has not been kind on the khaganate's coffers and only loot and tribute from Russian counties seeking peace have kept them out of the red. It is then Etrek swears that Oleg's head will hang at the gates of his castle.

The war continues, as Etrek's forces push deeper and deeper into Bjarma, looting as they go. It is about this time that Rus' patriots start making trouble, forcing Etrek to send back armies to put them down. To make matters worse, Oleg wins the First Battle of Novogrod, stopping the Cuman advance. Etrek reorganizes over the winter, waiting for his chance in the spring. But it alludes him, as the spring muds make it impossible for Etrek's army to move into Novogrod. Etrek waits for summer, watching as various diseases kill his men.

But if Etrek's been having it bad, Oleg's been having it worse. Confined to the poorest parts of Bjarma with no food or water supply coming regularly, Oleg and his men start to resemble skeletons. To make matters worse, small pox strikes Novogrod, killing more of Oleg's men. By the time summer comes, and Etrek attacks, Oleg is forced to retreat before the battle even starts, or face open mutiny from his men. Leaving a screening force to hopefully delay Etrek, Oleg retreats deeper into Bjarma. Etrek sieges Novogrod and the Second Battle of Novogrod, as it is called, ends in a Cuman victory.

Etrek sends out a peace offering again, this time demanding the principality of Kiev, Chernigov, and five hundred gold in tribute. Oleg finally agrees, and peace reigns once again after nearly eight years of war.

Now with coffers bursting with gold, Etrek goes about building monuments so that he shall never be forgotten. The first of such is the improvement of the synagogue in Desht-i-Kipchak, making it larger and providing it with a new library full of books on the Jewish faith.

Etrek also expands the small fishing dock in Lower Don into a full on harbor, giving Cuman the most sophisticated harbor in east Europe. To further expand trade, Etrek allows moneylenders to open up in Lower Don, Uzens, and Desht-i-Kipchak. Finally, Etrek improves the hill fort he calls a castle into a true castle. Sure it's a little small and cramped, but it gets the job done.

With the money now flowing freely, the towns in Lower Don and Desht-i-Kipchak start expanding rapidly and several men approach the khagan with ideas of opening a glass-works, mine, dye factory, tile-factory, and smithy in Desht-i-Kipchak, promising much money. Etrek, always eager to expand the coffers, agrees to their ventures, and tells them to start work as soon as possible. By 1100 Desht-i-Kipchak is the richest and most advanced city in Rus' and possibly east Europe.

Desht-e-Qipchak, as in, literally, "Kipchak Steppe"?

Well, I suppose there is a Gulay-Pole as a city name :D. Still, sounds funny to me.

Desht-e-Qipchak, as in, literally, "Kipchak Steppe"?

Yeah. :D It's ok - obviously, it's a later Russian toponym used to describe the ruins of the arid wasteland after the Jews've been steamrolled by a couple of jihads and Mongol invasions. :p

CHAPTER TWO: Part Four: The Reign of Khagan Etrek I, also called Etrek the Pious, Etrek the Old, Etrek the Just, Etrek the Wise, Etrek the Conqueror, Etrek the Good, Etrek the Architect, Etrek the Patron, and Etrek the Great

etrek.jpg

The khaganate under Etrek is richer and stronger than ever before. It fears no outside enemies, but as Etrek ages many of his relatives start trying to gain the title of Khagan of the Cumans.

It starts in the newly conquered Pecheneg lands, when Sugar, Etrek's Pecheneg relative, shows how grateful he is that Etrek saved his Pecheneg brothers by claiming the be the rightful khagan of not only the Cumans, but also the Pechenegs. Several of Etrek's vassals, sensing that they could potentially gain power under Sugar, join his revolt, creating the Khaganate of Pechenegs.

Etrek, though aged, reacts with a quickness that shows his soul is still young. Troops are mobilized and quickly march on the rouge khagan, but Sugar has no plans of giving up easily. Sugar meets Etrek outside Korsun and Oleshye. Sugar is repulsed in the Battle of Oleshye, but only Etrek summons reinforcements, but Korsun is lost, due mostly to the incompetence of Etrek's generals, who recklessly charge Sugar's forces, despite having far better positions.

Etrek swings out of Oleshye and attacks Korsun, hoping to stop the siege. But Sugar has been carefully reinforcing Korsun and Etrek has greatly underestimated Sugar's troops. Etrek is forced to retreat from Korsun, tasting his first real defeat. He finds it extremely bitter.

Korsun falls and Sugar moves forward, much to Etrek's displeasure. Battle after battle, Sugar bests Etrek, forcing him to withdraw. Etrek continues to mobilize regiments, but it's getting harder and harder to find a willing vassal, as they become displeasured with Etrek's heavy hand. Finally, Etrek is able to gather enough troops to stop Sugar outside the gates of Desht-i-Kipchak, but at a high cost.

The victory is just what Etrek needs. Not only does it revitalize him, it also restores some confidence in his abilities. Slowly, Etrek begins winning again, now with the help of new troops, while Sugar has mobilized nearly all his regiments.

It takes nearly a year and a half, but Etrek reconquers all his lost lands, and starts to attack into Pecheneg proper. Sugar starts sending peace feelers, but Etrek doesn't want tribute, he wants Pecheneg back. Birland, Pecheng's capitol, is sieged after nearly three years of fighting. In 1110, Sugar is finally defeated for the last time, in the Battle of Severin, where Sugar himself is killed in battle. Pecheneg is annexed back into the khaganate in 1111.

Etrek, tired of fighting, settles down and goes to work on the khaganate's finances, lowering sucutage and taxes to appease the people and his vassals. This brings the amount of money Etrek himself is making to nearly single figures, but the cost is worth it, everyone seems to be happy.

Just when Etrek thinks things are quiet, someone needs to disrupt it. The Duchy of Azov, lead by Khutan, a distant relative to Etrek revolts, trying to claim the title of khagan. Etrek, taken by complete surprise, scrambles to assemble an army.

But Khutan isn't the threat Sugar is, because he doesn't enjoy the support of his vassals, who quickly make it clear they're loyal to Etrek, the one true khagan, revolting against Khutan in favor of Etrek.

This civil war is short and to the point. Azov is sieged after only six months, and Khutan is stripped of all his titles, which are then given to his vassals who showed loyalty to Etrek during the Azov Rebellion.

Time passes and Etrek ages, reaching the unheard of age of 70. He's a tired old man, but that doesn't mean he can be pushed around, as the new Georgian king is quick to find out. Oleg, eager to reclaim Alania, declares war on Cuman, hoping to take advantage of Etrek's old age. Etrek shows him that just because he's on in years, doesn't make him senile. Troops are mobilized and push into Georgia, easily defeating the 100 men under Oleg. Soon all of Georgia is under Etrek's control, and Oleg is forced to abdicate and give up his lands to Etrek.

Etrek has seen much in his life. He has seen kingdoms rise and fall and great men fall on their swords. He's been the one behind most of these events. But every great man must face one foe he can't beat: Death. In 1135, Etrek dies in his bed, after living for 78 years, 70 of which he devoted to the ruling of the khaganate.

Khutan, Etrek's oldest son, takes the throne. He has mighty big shoes to fill, but the general census is that he can do it.
