I was thinking about creating an RPG mod for EU2, based on some fantasy setting - complete with maps, nations, events, new graphics and first of all - interesting RPG feel.
Such project requires quite a bit of time to produce, so I'm curious if people will be interested in this? Also, which world should it be based on - LOTR/Wheel of time/some D&D setting like Forgotten Realms/or perhaps a world made from scratch? Established worlds offer maps, history and much more, but the copyright issue might bite. New world wont be as attractive - it's much more fun to play as king of Angmar or some fantasy kingdom you know well from books..
Any thoughts?

I myself had created a fantasy world for a book I am writing that I was going to port into a scenario on the vanilla map this was way back before it became possible to edit the map.

I think it would be better to do what I was trying to do and create a from scratch Fantasy World.
That way the events and everything could be entirely your own; complete freedom to write the whole history of the world.

I don't think Wheel of Time would be a great idea (I thought a bit on it and IMHO it would just become ugly...).

But I personally would be very interested in such a thing, and could help a little here and there although not extremely much.

I like this idea! But there are a few problems that would have to be worked out:

1. Map: We'd have to chose which to use. A recognizable one has its advantages as far as recognition goes, but the nice thing with doing one from scratch is that the player wouldn't have any idea where to go while exploring, a good departure from regular EU2. ;)

2. Magic: A staple of any fantasy is magic. How could this be implemented in the game? Events? Techs?

3. Tech level: Most fantasy is basically medieval/early Renaissance techwise, while EU2 is mostly later than that.

4. History: Not a problem for adapting a world already made, but if we make one from scratch we'd have to work out not only the "1419-1819" history (so to speak) but the previous history as well.

As for the map, if we're going to make one from scratch, let's make one from scratch, i.e. one specifically for this. There's a program I know about that can generate random world maps we can work from, I'll get a link as soon as I can.

1. Definitely a new one, IMHO.

3. This can be solved by a bit of editing, so that it becomes Medieval based. It is highly possible, but won't be really as good.

4. Highly possible and worth it, but requires a bit of work.

My point of view. :rolleyes:

Well, I started making a map some weeks ago and in a few hours got this (notice the lack of rivers %) but i'll learn it as well ):
Since then I was busy but it seems that full world map wont take long (especially with fractal mapping software :) )

As for world history and the basic outline.. If we borrow some epic fantasy ideas perhaps we can roughly outline the world history as follows - years 0-100 - Evil advances and the free nations crumbling upon their feet (First scenario), years 100-200 - Forces of good gather all their strength and barely win the "last" battle and after that they start pushing back, 200-300 - Peaceful times - evil orcs\drow\frogman\hippies are living in their swamps and mountains, occasionally sending small raiding parties, most of the fighting for territory and wealth is between the various kingdoms of men. And finally from year 300 another huge event a-la Armageddon\Evil Nappy reincarnation comes and the epic battly between good\evil\ninja turtles begins.

Basically it's all seems pretty easy - standard fantasy races (based on religion? or better some flags to differeniate between them?) - humans, elves, dwarves, standard evil fodder cannon race (orcs), ancient sneaky evil bastards (lizardman or huge grasshoppers). We can use random name generators for kings, kingdoms and even provinces - there are plenty of them. Tech can be constantly set on 1, with 5 for some advanced kingdoms. Or perhaps it can advance at a much slower rate to simulate medieval fantasy lack of rapid technical advances.
And some random events to spice things up (besides huge scenario event chains). Like - "A travelling bard visits your realm", "Mercenaries", "Orcs raids" (for goodies), "Palladin raids" (for baddies), "Ancient artifact discovered", "Evil wizard uses mind control on the king", "Reckless magic experiment destroys your city\something else\converts sheep to bears etc" and so on.

Culture as well.

What I've done with Medieval Universalis is that I change the tech effects with Montecuma's tech editor, and modiy land.csv, naval. csv etc. Would work good.

IMHO a more complex story would be nice.

A couple of random events I cooked up based on Moredhel's ideas:

Code:
event = {
	id = xxxxx

	random = yes
	name = "Major magical accident"
	desc = "While magic is capable of many unusual and wonderful things, it is also
                dangerous if not controlled correctly. Sometimes a magical experiment
                could have unexpected results, or an inexperienced wizard could make a
                mistake, or a malicious entity could try and use magic to create havoc."
	style = 1

	action_a = {
		name = "It's just an isolated incident"
		command = { type = stability value = -2 }
		command = { type = population which = -1 value = -500 }
		command = { type = provincetax which = -3 value = -1 }
	}
	action_b = {
		name = "Increase regulations on magic use"
		command = { type = population which = -1 value = -500 }
		command = { type = domestic which = INNOVATIVE value = -2 }
		command = { type = stability value = -1 }
	}
	action_c = {
		name = "Subsidize an inquiry into what happened"
		command = { type = population which = -1 value = -500 }
		command = { type = treasury value = -200 }
	}
}

event = {
	id = xxxxx

	trigger = {
		OR = {
			religion = xxxxx  #Whatever religions we're using
			religion = xxxxx #for the "good guys".
					#And however many of them.
		}
		year = 200
	}

	random = yes
	name = "Orc raid!"
	desc = [I'll think of one later]
	style = 1

	action_a = {
		name = "I hate those... things!"
		command = { type = population which = -1 value = -500 }
		command = { type = provincetax which = -3 value = -1 }
		command = { type = desertion which = -3 value = 3000 }
	}
}

We'll need to get our effort a little more organized I think, though. We're going at this a little scattershot right now...

Not quite. I was on a vacation, but now I'm back, unemployed and with two months of free time (except for a few postponed exams).
Here's a map I drew long time ago. I think its not bad, but would like to hear your comments. After all its quite easy to change.
