I belive they are didn't know that was a reference to a Turtle Dove writing. So this may be a stupid question: Are tanks still referred to as "Barrels"? They were in Vicky 1; it's a reference to Turtledove's Timeline-181 series.

Why else would be call them Barrels?
No, although that's the joke Turtledove was making by calling them Barrels instead. They were reffered to as "water carriers"/"water tanks" and later just "tanks".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_tanks#Early_conceptsThe name "tank" was introduced in October, 1915 as a security measure and has been adopted in many languages. William Tritton, stated that when the prototypes were under construction from August, 1915 they were deliberately falsely described in order to conceal their true purpose.[30] In the workshop the paperwork described them as "water carriers," supposedly for use on the Mesopotamian Front. In conversation the workers referred to them as "water tanks" or, simply, "tanks."
Well there's:

I also have Guderian's "Achtung Panzer!" here, which mentions the choosing of the "Tank" codename in his WWI retrospective. Other early working names were "Machine gun destroyer" and "Landship", but since Tank was the widely used one once they were revealed it's what stuck.
The only place I have seen "Barrel" is in the Turtledove books, and I know that's where Johan got it from.
Wouldn't it be more awesome if they were Landships and a part of navy, with bright flags, rum and stories of landsharks.Look out! here come a 'King Tiger Machine gun Destroyer!' That is General Patton, America's best Machine Gun Destroyer Commander! ACHTUNG! Maschinengewehr Zerstörer

The Royal navy, and especially Winston Churchill as First lord, was one of the driving factors in early tank development, so it wouldn't be that far-fetched![]()
